Carolina: If you can't vote for Edwards...don't vote against him!
John Edwards is the bridge between the two Carolinas. Born in South Carolina, raised in North Carolina, Senator Edwards -- a man, a gentleman, who has honorably represented our states, could well become the windfall we have so long deserved.
The towns and cities that are his roots, will blossom in tourism money alone! Exponentially!
But the entire states of North and South Carolina will benefit from an Edwards and Kerry victory...again, in just tourism dollars...some of which will be converted into future businesses, and such, since they will obviously love it, and want to relocate here.
A vote for Edwards is a vote for the Carolinas. Both of them.
But a vote for Bush is a vote for Texas...not a state we generally want to emulate. We are, frankly, better than that.
A victory for Edwards is a victory in every way. Tourism dollars are just the tip of the iceberg. Use your imagination. Manufacturing relief comes to mind. But I suspect the Carolinas will also become the hub of alternative energy and other 21st century endeavors.
Be optimistic! Vote FOR Edwards. But if you still can't...please don't vote AGAINST him, because it will be a vote against our future. A happy tourist is infinitely more desirable than a hostile one. We need to repair at home and abroad. And Edwards will be the conduit of our good ideas. Lord knows we need good ideas!
TASTE, CLASS, SINCERITY
John Edwards shares the same values as most Carolinians: Taste, Class and Sincerity. But these qualities are not just prized in the Carolinas...they are also qualities valued throughout the Southeast. And speaking from the experience of having lived a decade in New England...these are also qualities valued in that region. And also because of my years there, I was also able to see many hours of John Kerry over the years, and can testify that he too shares these values.
By Taste, I mean, among other things, Discernment. It is better to read Pat Conroy or Reynolds Price than to watch violence on TV, for instance. And Class demands a certain noblesse oblige, or sense of duty to serve those who need it. Sincerity means to be a good steward because you are a good steward, not for some ego boost, or financial recompense.
There are, of course, many other values that we all share: Honesty, Integrity, Openness, Friendliness, Sacrifice, Freedom, Liberty, Truth, Family, Love, Humor... and in among these, not one is not without home in the Kerry/Edwards ticket.
We should be happy these two gentlemen came along to guide us back to civility and respect around the globe.
It is how we ALL win.

"You guys are a hell of a lot more important than your bosses are willing to admit."
Jim Lehrer: Champion of the People
EXCERPT:
"I think that starting tomorrow, we're going to have four of the eight most important days we can have as a nation," said Lehrer, criticizing CBS's Dan Rather, ABC's Peter Jennings, and NBC's Tom Brokaw for not getting more air time. "I'm sorry. You guys are a hell of a lot more important than your bosses are willing to admit."
Addressing the challenges of covering politics in a politically polarized environment, CBS Rather stated that "fear has increased in every newsroom in America," and added that reporting on explosive issues can bring a torrent of e-mails and phone calls. That can lead to a situation, he said, in which journalists conclude that "when you run this story, you're asking for trouble with a capital 'T'. . . Why run it?"

Haaretz - Israel News - Jews between Israel and France
(via ConventionBlogger and Josh Marshall)
Here is an excellent editorial by Haaretz on Sharon's misguided demand that France's Jews come immediately to Israel...
Lord knows Mr. Sharon is trying to protect Israel and the Jewish people, but one wonders if the less honorable things he has done in his life have not, perhaps, tainted his judgement.
Some day, the Jews, the Muslims, and the Christians will trade in their historical hatred, and make that quantum leap to Universal Love...as their, and our, God would wish upon us all.
As a citizen of the American South who has lived through the riots and hatred, I know these things can be overcome. I wish the Middle East, and indeed, the World...Godspeed!
The weapons of war have become too dangerous, and our consciences have become too desiccated by fear, to carry on...without dire results that will spoil what good remains.
People may want revenge...but not if it means sacrificing friends and family, for the short-term satisfaction of getting that revenge...which only pushes the cyle forward, ever-forward.
Forgiveness, as Dag Hammerskold once said, breaks the chain of causality.
Trust in Mister Sharon will surely wane with his recent remarks. And trust has dwindled considerably for Mister Bush.
It may well be time for both our countries to find more trustworthy leaders for whom Peace IS a virtue, and Universal Love is a possibility.

In 1991, Noam Chomsky spoke of some of the atrocities of the first war in Iraq:
There was an awesome demonstration of this in Iraq./ Military operations were designed so that no battles took place...When U.S. troops entered Kuwait they were led by a battalion of engineers using bulldozers. These were used to bury possibly thousands of Iraqi soldiers alive in their trenches. They simply drove the bulldozers over the trenches and buried the soldiers alive. This is a horrible war crime, but nobody cares. Nonetheless, it does reveal something about U.S. military planning. If you attack someone who can defend themselves, you don't send bulldozers into battle. This makes it clear that the United States had prepared everything in such a way that there was never going to be a war. And effectively, there never was a war, only slaughter and atrocities.
-Noam Chomsky
When I hear about the graves of dead soldiers we now keep "finding"...whom should I assume put them there? Questions, questions...

NEWS & OPINION
Rockers are urging young people to go out and vote against George W. Bush
Rickie Lee Jones, on her latest album, Evening of My Best Day, sings a song called “Ugly Man.” She told the New York Post that “it’s definitely about the Bushes…. They have no redeeming qualities. They’re despicable…. This is the closest we’ve come to Nazi Germany…. They see Iraq and Iran as a way to make money.”
The Assassination of Iraqi Intellectuals
Overlooked by the U.S. Press is the escalating assassination of Iraqi academics, intellectuals, and lecturers. More than 250 college professors since April 30, 2003, according to the Iraqi Union of University Lecturers, have been the targets of assassination.
...
According to Union of Iraqi Lecturers, if “the stream of assassinations” continue, Iraqi Colleges and Universities will be left without a qualified teaching staff.
Neoconservatives - never apologize, never explain
It's a bad time to be a neocon. All of their assumptions were wrong. Postwar Iraq turned out to be a dog's breakfast. The high-tech, high-speed military is so desperate for troops it's planning to offer bonuses of up to $10,000 to sailors and airmen who would otherwise muster out of the Navy and Air Force. The weapons of mass destruction haven't been found and democracy isn't flowering.
Big Three Networks Dim Their Lights on Kerry
A new study of network TV election coverage over the first half of 2004 reveals a dimming spotlight for Democratic candidate John Kerry. Meanwhile, the Bush campaign has made impressive strides in placing their own candidate before the cameras.

Girlie-men can't take criticism
America is filled with girlie-men...who become squeamish when people do something so simple as to criticize the president. Look at how these girlie-men behave when Linda Ronstadt dedicates a song to Michael Moore. Or the Dixie Chicks make fun of the president. Or Bill Maher jokes about the president.
Girlie-men? Yes they are out there. They are the thin-skinned, pussilanimous, weak-minded Bush apologists you hear whining when their protective bubble is burst.

The Great Sandy Berger Backfire
The Tables Turn
I'll cut to the chase...
Melanie Ann Pustay, Deputy Director
Office of Information and Policy
Department of Justice
Suite 570, Flag Building
Washington, D.C. 20530-0001
July 21, 2004
Dear Ms. Pustay:
This letter constitutes a request under the Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA"), 5 U.S.C. §552, and is submitted on behalf of the Democratic National Committee.
According to recent reporting, an investigation into former National Security Adviser Samuel Berger has been going on for at least nine months, since October 2003. Yet, the criminal investigation only came to light three days prior to the release of a report expected to be critical of the Bush administration's lack of focus on the events leading up to the 9-11 attacks. As conservative scholar Norm Ornstein stated, "you can't look at the timing of this with anything but an enormous amount of skepticism." [CNN, 7/20/04]
In light of the seriousness of the possibility that the Bush administration and the Department of Justice have politicized an ongoing investigation, it is imperative that this Freedom of Information request is responded to in an expedited manner.
Under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. 552 and the regulations of the Department of Justice, 28 C.F.R. §16.3, I am requesting copies of the following:
Any and all communications relating or referring to the investigation of Samuel ("Sandy") Berger, between, correspondence (including electronic mail) between, memoranda between, phone records of communications between, meeting notes and/or minutes of meetings between, on the one hand, any official or employee of the US Department of Justice AND, on the other hand, (i) the Executive Office of the President or any unit or office thereof (including but not limited to the Office of the Vice President); (ii) any official, employee, or representative of the Republican National Committee; OR (iii) any official, employee or representative of the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign.
This request covers all documents created during the period from and including October 1, 2003 through and including July 20, 2004.
For your purposes in filling this request, please consider me under the category of "all other organizations," as defined by the Freedom of Information Act. If there are any fees for copying or searching for the records I have requested, please inform me of the cost prior to searching or copying, and only if the total exceeds $100.
If all or any part of this request is denied, please cite the specific exemption which you believe justifies your refusal to release the information and inform me of your agency's administrative appeal procedures available to me under the law.
Please provide all information on a rolling basis if possible. I appreciate your handling of this request as quickly as possible and I look forward to hearing from you within 20 working days, as the law stipulates.
If you have any questions or need further information concerning the above request, please contact me at the address below or at 202-863-8121.
Thank you for your attention to this request.
Sincerely,

Democrats Win! World Erupts in Celebration!
Celebration, relief and good cheer spread across the globe, as war-happy madman is replaced by sane and beautiful leaders who respect all peoples.
OR...
Republicans win. America goes to war with Iran.
Foolwells get their Armageddon. Millions die needlessly. A handful of suits reap windfall profits.
It really has come down to this. And make no mistake about it...this is the most important election in the history of the world. It is a matter of life and death. Many, many deaths. And frankly, we can't afford it. Not in blood. Not in treasure. Not in the world community.
Those who see elections as mere sport may only bet on their own team, regardless of how much damage their "team" will wreak upon the enterprise. But this would be a foolish supposition. Even deadly. And don't think blood won't blowback, if only in the subtlest ways. There will not be enough beer to drown out the sorrow of so many innocent people being slaughtered needlessly, just because you had to have your way. Your way may not be the best way.
Regardless of any stats one may concoct, this president has done wrong by America and the World, and the overwhelming majority of people who happen to not live within our borders, are deeply troubled, to put it lightly, by our having such a bellicose leader and administration. And were we to re-elect him -- arguable the worst President in American history... after dropping the man who was perhaps the most prepared man in our history -- What are they to think, except that we are either insane, perverse, or jaded...and lacking all good judgement?
In this election, it is not, "It's the economy, Stupid." It is "It's the World, Stupid!"
Serendipitously, while writing my illustrious and correct thoughts, a song wafted from my speakers that sums it up pretty well:

Senator John Warner was probably duped into Rev. Moon debacle
Warner Linked to the Rev. Moon (washingtonpost.com)
Senator Warner of Virginia is a reasonable man, a respectable man, and one who is not likely to knowingly allow what happened...to happen.
Instead of picking on Senator Warner, I would suggest that the media focus on more solid connections to the man who claims to be the Messiah...like the Washington Times, and the many Conservative groups Rev. Moon funds.
I personally don't know whether or not Rev. Moon is the Messiah, but when he says stuff like... his teachings have helped Hitler and Stalin be "reborn as new persons"...one has to wonder.
I suspect he is just feeling like a Messiah, the way religious conservatives flock to him for money and advice...so respectful and deferential and all.

"Outfoxed": FOX exposed as biased, unprofessional groupthinkers...at best
Imagine Jayson Blair...the notorious New York Times spinmeister who was canned and ridiculed for making up stories out of thin air.
Now multiply Jayson Blair by hundreds, thousands, and visualize them working for the same company.

And if you don't believe me...watch "OutFoxed". It will open your eyes to the sad realities.

They may as well close up shop, bury their heads in shame, and hope to be hired as circus monkeys.

Bush hopes war with Iran will help in re-election
Regime change in Iran now in Bush's sights
Leave it to George. As if our soldiers were rested and willing, Idiot George now wants to open yet another wound...in Iran. And is he going to go and help with the fighting? No. He is going to send our youth over to do his dirty work.
Does this man never tire of killing? Does the Media never tire of aiding and abetting the killing?
Apparently not. They are already pounding the war drums. Manufacturing the consent.
One could say these are cancers on the world, but they kill far people more than cancer kills. And cancer shouldn't know better.
Listen. If the news doesn't pass through a reliable fact-checker...how 'bout just keep it to yourself! Bad information is worse than no information at all.

One could say these are cancers on the world, but they kill far people more than cancer kills. And cancer shouldn't know better.
Listen. If the news doesn't pass through a reliable fact-checker...how 'bout just keep it to yourself! Bad information is worse than no information at all.

Headlines in the News
NEWS SUMMARY
Millions of people are suffering in South Asia and our government is sitting on its hands. Kerry and Edwards should demand massive humanitarian aid, and they should do it now. America has the chance to become a Humanitarian Superpower, but Bush is a mere War President. Peace and well-being are apparently above their pay-grade or abilities. Perhaps even more egregious is the relative black-out of this crisis, and the escalating crises in Iraq, by the commercial media. In a related item, there is a column of why journalists help governments lie.
In Iraq, things are spiralling even further out of control, so much so that one BBC commentator called it a "Civil War". But since this doesn't bode well for Mister Bush, the Big Media are looking elsewhere. At Martha, for instance. For her part, she is being a fearless bodhisattva.
On the US Election front, Florida is, once again, proving to be as opprobrious as ever. Same old shenanigans are being pulled from the ass of the Bush family, and foisted upon Black Floridian voters. Greg Palast and Jesse Jackson are soldiering on in their attempt to ensure clean elections. Time will tell...
Sir Elton John is the latest to decry the "No nay-sayer goes unpunished" tactics of BushWorld.
FOX News is again in the news, as "Outfoxed" hits #1 on Amazon.com, and they get sued for using "Fair and Balanced"...which they clearly are anything but.
The Drug/Media cartel are once again selling snake oil to a gullible public, even though their cures are often worse than the disease. With the Media so heavily invested in Drugs, how could they be so foolish as to critique their paymasters? Even if it might mean preventing the unnecessary death of innocents. Speaking of which...the NY Times apologizes for their "groupthink" which helped the Bush Administration hurl so many Americans to their unnecessary deaths. As Schopenhauer warned: "Dull minds think alike."
The comeuppance of Tom Delay continues...

John Edwards condemns Bush. Says he should accept responsibiliy, like Tony Blair.
Edwards: Bush is no Blair
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards assailed President Bush for lacking the courage of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who on Wednesday took full responsibility for the intelligence failures that led both nations into war in Iraq.

But are we "better off" without those killed to remove Saddam?
:: But are we "better off" without those killed to remove Saddam?
Sure...America is better off without Saddam in power. Maybe. We shall see. The jury is still out, and thousands are still going to die...while Saddam still lives.
But is America better off without the thousands of soldiers, contractors, and innocents that have died in order to remove Saddam? I submit the answer is a resounding NO!
To have lost even one life in exchange for Saddam is too many. And yet Bush keeps hurling our boys and girls into the fire.
Time to fire Bush. He is a killer president...whose presidency is bogus and illegitimate. Do the math.
Another Bush term would spell the end of America. The world simply cannot sustain another blundering four years of this buffoon. Send him back to Crawford. There he can do little harm.

From Saddam to Sodomy : How Bush is screwing Iraq
EdCone.com: "Seymour Hersh says the US government has videotapes of boys being sodomized at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
'The worst is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking,' the reporter told an ACLU convention last week. Hersh says there was 'a massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there, and higher.'"

Too bad beer-drinking JD Hayworth/Rush Limbaugh lookalike, Mike Ditka, didn't go up again this accomplished gentleman. Woulda been a hoot!
Barak Obama will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Obama, who is African American, is a rising Democratic star and the campaign clearly hopes his prominent role will send a message about Kerry’s commitment to diversity.

Fox News Memos: The Whole Batch
Fox News Memos: The Whole Batch
MEMOS FROM FOX EXECS TO THEIR FOOTSTOOLS
Every one of these paragraphs contain something untoward and/or unbecoming for a news organization. See if you can spot it. I will help out in a few instances...
Nominees who both sides admit are qualified are being held up because of their POSSIBLE, not demonstrated, views on one issue -- abortion. This should be a trademark issue for FNC [Fox News Channel] today and in the days to come.
At the UN, Catherine Herridge will follow the US sponsored resolution calling for the lifting of sanctions against Iraq. Not surprisingly, we're facing resistance from our erstwhile European buddies, the French and Germans.
The terror alert continues to affect the way Americans live their lives, both as consumers, participants in public events and citizens. Let's explain to viewers that while prudent precautions need to be taken, the disruption of the American way of life is in itself a terrorist goal and should not be conceded to our enemies.
The tax cut passed last night by the Senate, though less than half what Bush originally proposed, contains some important victories for the administration. The DC crew will parse the bill and explain how it will fatten -- marginally -- your wallet.
Imagine the glee of Fox employees at the prospect of a fatter wallet!
Heads of state don't leave G-8 meetings early unless they have good reasons. President Bush has two: he has to get to Egypt, and he doesn't like the French. Let's explain to viewers that despite the tepid handshake, Bush and Chirac are far from reconciled, as are the US and Germany. The early departure from Evian should take the sparkle out of the bottled water spa.
Imagine Brokaw, Jennings or Rather telling their underlings: "Remember...we don't like the French and Germans."
Adolescents leading the infantile...
We have good perp walk video of Eric Rudolph which we should use. We should NOT assume that anyone who supported or helped Eric Rudolph is a racist. No one's in favor of murder or bombing of public places. But feelings in North Carolina may just be more complicated than the NY Times can conceive. Two style notes: Rudolph is charged with bombing an abortion clinic, not a "health clinic."
Abortion bad. Health good.
It's a distinctly skeptical crowd that Bush faces. His political courage and tactical cunning are worth noting in our reporting through the day.
FOX: A Republican Propaganda Machine
The national forest as pot field story is pure Fox.
That's right, FOX. Go after those evil National Parks!
For our purposes, as a story, it's very important to know whether ETA or Al Qaeda was responsible for the Madrid bombings. For the victims the distinction is minimal. Terrorism is international, and the United States is the leader of the coalition to stamp it out. That's the tone we want to impart throughout the day.
Or is that what the White House told you to tell them to say?
Scary thought of the day: what if it's a consortium of terrorist groups working together?
Fear-mongering again? Oh yeah...fear sells news and products. Who cares that it diminishes one's quality of life...and health?
Spain's neighbor, the ever-superior France, had its own spate of railway terrorist warnings last week, though it's not clear that those were in any way related to the Madrid bombings.
Ever-superior France? Got an attitude problem?
Gas prices are at all time highs in the US. There are reasons for the surge, some economic, some mere business tactics. Remember: US prices, while they seem high to us, are a half or less the cost of gasoline elsewhere.
Why is gas so high? Business tactics of course! But will you tell US this? In memos maybe, but not in the news.
Kerry, starting to feel the heat for his flip-flop voting record, is in West Virginia. There's a near-meaningless primary in Illinois.
The birth of the flip-flop talking point?
Attention mice: the cat is back.
(My thanks to Ken and David for filling in.)
Fox employees are not even rats. They are merely mice! Well done!
The so-called 9/11 commission has already been meeting. In fact, this is the eighth session. The fact that former Clinton and both frmer and current Bush administration officials are testifying gives it a certain tension, but this is not "what did he know and when did he know it" stuff. Do not turn this into Watergate. Remember the fleeting sense of national unity that emerged from this tragedy. Let's not desecrate that.
For everyone's information, the hotel where our Baghdad bureau is housed was hit by some kind of explosive device overnight. ALL FOX PERSONNEL ARE OK. The incident is a reminder of the danger our colleagues in Baghdad face, day in and day out. Please offer a prayer of thanks for their safety to whatever God you revere (and let the ACLU stick it where the sun don't shine).
Offer a prayer?
To whatever God you revere? Really? Allah even?
As the witness list indicates, today is likely to be the apex of the so-called 9/11 commission hearings. Tenet, Clarke, and Clinton NSC advisor Berger all testify. We will carry their statements, along with he Q&A, live. Remember that while there are obvious political implications for Bush, the commission is looking at eight years of the Clinton Administration versus eight months (the time prior to 9/11 that Bush was in office) for the incumbent.
We also have an interview with chief of staff Andrew Card from Fox and Friends, where he makes the administration's case on the hearings and other things.
Blame it on Clinton!
SCOTUS considers if students can be required to say the pledge of allegiance, including the words "under God." The case is on of the more significant ones the court will have before it this session.
Priorities, kids! Priorities!
Five American GIs killed in Iraq in a bomb and an attack represent one of the grimmest days there in months. There is also footage of a mutilated body being dragged down a road which WE WILL NOT AIR UNTIL IT HAS BEEN CLEARED.
The US military has said its response to the Fallujah massacre will be measured but forceful. Be prepared to get on this when it happens.
MONDAY UPDATE: Into Fallujah: It's called Operation Vigilant Resolve and it began Monday morning (NY time) with the US and Iraqi military surrounding Fallujah. We will cover this hour by hour today, explaining repeatedly why it is happening. It won't be long before some people start to decry the use of "excessive force." We won't be among that group.
...whatever happens, it is richly deserved.
Even a hundred nuclear bombs? Anything?
The Sharon interview with Israeli Army radio leaves little doubt that Yasser Arafat should not buy any green bananas. It's going to be a tricky road for Sharon who has previously promised not to harm the Palestinian figurehead
By the way, Israel will also be extra vigilant today as Passover begins. To all our collegues about to celebrate it, Zissen Pesach.
I wonder if they wish their employees a Happy Kwanzaa or Happy Ramadan?
Do not fall into the easy trap of mourning the loss of US lives and asking out loud why are we there?
Indeed! That would mean that you have a conscience, and we know we screen you better than that!
We'll start to preview Dr. Rice's testimony before congress on Thursday. Angle is the point man for this story.
Point man? So they score points for flawless cheerleading?
Kerry's speech on the economy at Georgetown is likely to move onto the topic of Iraq. We should take the beginning of KErry's speech, see if it contains new information (aside from a promise to create 10 million jobs) and see if other news at the time is more compelling. It is not required to take it start to finish.
Yawn! Show economy. Busy Iraq.
The hearing on Rush Limbaugh's medical records could be a death blow to the case against him. If the 3 judge panel rules that his doctor's records cannot be used bythe prosecution, the case is likely to go away.
Today is Patriots' Day. Let's be very alert to the events that have occurred on this day in past years: Ruby Ridge, OKC, Waco, and, one day later, Columbine.
Patriots magnetize misfortune.
The time for talking in Fallujah is nearly up. Let's follow this as long as possible before talk turns to a new firefight.
Yeeeeehi! Shoot 'em up!
If Michael Jackson is indicted on sex charges, it's a big story for us...
Priorities, children!
THURSDAY UPDATE: let's rock n roll with the korean train explosion. korean websites are speculating freely that it was a mistimed hit on kim. that gives us the right to quote them, and let guests etc speculate. it is eerie that it happened just hours after the dear leader finished his business in china and pointedly took the train home.
Ooh! Rock n Roll! How 50s!
Let's not get lost in breast-beating about the sadness of the loss of life. They had a chance.
Conscience? What conscience?
Ribbons or medals? Which did John Kerry throw away after he returned from Vietnam. This may become an issue for him today. His perceived disrespect for the military could be more damaging to the candidate than questions about his actions in uniform.
And so it was!
TUESDAY UPDATE: Let's not overdo the appearances by Kerry's swiftboat mate John O'Neil. While his appearances so far have been OK, he represents one side of the 30 year recollections of what Kerry did, or didn't do, in uniform. Other people have different recollections.
Do not ignore the Oil for Food story, please. Fox News is making steady progress in investigating what could be, without exaggeration, the biggest ripoff of all time, the House Intl Relations committee holds more hearings today.
The president and VP are MEETING with the 9/11 commission. They are NOT testifying before it as did witnesses last week. It is an important distinction that we need to make.
We'll get to the electronic voting machine debate, making the point that it has the POTENTIAL to delay elections in many states.
A delay of the election? Imagine that!
And in Oregon, Dennis Kucinich is making his final stand -- so he says -- in his quest for Democratic party respect. Springer is there.
Thursday update: the pictures from Abu Graeb prison are disturbing. They have rightly provoked outrage. Today we have a picture -- aired on Al Arabiya -- of an American hostage being held with a scarf over his eyes, clearly against his will. Who's outraged on his behalf?
It is important that we keep the Abu Graeb situation in perspective. The story is beginning to live on itw own momentum. The facts of the story may develop into the need to do much more in the days ahead. For the moment, however, the focus appears to be changing to finger pointing within the administration and how it plays out as an issue in the presidential campaign.
Learn to spell. And talk. And think. And feel.

And talk. And think. And feel.

This footage, obtained and presented exclusively by The Memory Hole, shows President Bush sitting in a Florida classroom for 5 minutes after he was told that the second Twin Tower has been hit and that America was being attacked. A truncated version of this footage that has been available online since June 2002 shows Bush for only 2 minutes, 10 seconds after being told. This new footage more than doubles this length of time.
Immediately below, you'll find still-frames from the video, one every 5 seconds starting when Chief of Staff Andrew Card gives Bush the news and ending when the scene abruptly ends. Bush Considered "Arrogant". So what is Arrogance?
From ABC News
AP Poll: Voters See President Bush As Decisive and Arrogant; More See John Kerry As Intelligent
Of course, the headlines all say "Decisive" not "Arrogant"...although none seem to think arrogance is all that negative. They are wrong. Dead wrong...
Here's why:

The Yin and Yang of Conservatism
The 7 States of Sickness
(from "Natural Healing Through Macrobiotics" by Michio Kushi)
1. Fatigue or Tiredness
2. Aches and Pains
3. Blood Diseases
4. Emotional Disorders
5. Organ Diseases
6. Nerve Diseases
7. Arrogance
FURTHER EXPLANATION
1. Fatigue or Tiredness - The major causes are lack of physical exercise plus over-eating and over-drinking, particularly meat and sugar.
2. Aches and Pains - The nervous system starts to weaken.
3. Blood Diseases - Thought incurable, these can often be cured by proper diet.
4. Emotional Disorders - This category includes problems such as irritability, impatience, upset, anger, anxiety, worry, fear, and uneasiness. A healthy person is not bothered by negative emotional states. If we become angry even once a year, we are not completely healthy. Ideally, we should not become angry even once during an entire lifetime.
(This was written before The Great Dewakening; The Current Unpleasantness. It could be argued that anger,as a defense mechanism, should be reserved for such times as these...although I much prefer Gandhean Satyagraha to vehemence and anger. Besides, there is always the Butterfly Effect to consider, as well as the even more subtle Taoist notion that one need not lift a finger, or make any ripple in the material world. A vision, well-wrought, can change minds and worlds effortlessly, internally. I digress...)
5. Organ Diseases - Organs begin to degenerate.
6. Nerve Diseases - Dullness, forgetfulness, social crimes.
7. Arrogance - This occurs when we try to separate ourselves from nature and the universe, and happens in one of two ways. The first is yang arrogance, and it appears in the form of a domineering, conquering, or self-insistent personality which tends to drive others away.
This yang arrogance is what George W. Bush, and many on the flagrant right-conservative site of the dial, have digested...although it occasionally takes root among those left of center...at which point they become neo-cons, after having passed through Dennis Miller.
"The yin type of arrogance shows itself in the form of withdrawal or a refusal to listen. Many of the elderly and and those who consider themselves devout or religious suffer from this form of arrogance. This type of person is usually not open to the opinions or suggestions of others."
Kushi continues: " Arrogance is actually the underlying cause of all human sickness and unhappiness and is at the same time the end point of the first six stages. Ultimately, all people who suffer from arrogance commit suicide by dying an unnatural death, either through sickness, war, accident, or other causes. The basic purpose of macrobiotic healing is to cure arrogance."
So here we have it. The explanation of what is today called "Conservatism"...although the only thing these folks are concerned about conserving is their ego; their arrogance -- whether it be in the form of Bush-style brashness, or the quieter, more obscurantistic hard-headed self-righteousness exhibited by the more reposed.
Arrogance is a killer...of self and others. It incorrectly places the ego where God, the Tao, the spirit, Stewardship, Magnanimity, or whatever name you call it, should be.
An image came to me last night which made me laugh. It was of a party where the brashest, most arrogant person arrives first...and every succeeding person had to one-up every preceding person. Imagine a Foghorn Leghorn, an Ahnold...followed by increasing degrees of Ahnoldness or Fogginess, if you will. How obnoxious can one party get?
Could such a party bear any fruit? Would any come out alive?
Arrogance is a perennial problem among those in power. We see it in the upper chambers of government and business...and we see the rotten fruit.
Arrogance is not to be confused with confidence. Post-docs are confident. Those with lesser degrees are arrogant...if I were to draw an analogy from the Academy. Those with a little education tend to be the know-it-alls, while the truly educated...continue learning. No room for arrogance when one is so outwardly focused.
arrogance and posterity
There is, I believe, a type of arrogance which might not be unhealthy, and it was discussed in Schoenhauer's essay, "On Genius". Here Schopenhauer talks about the "arrogance" of the writer or artist whose work is intended for posterity...or as some have said...that for whom one writes after having been rejected by the commercial presses. The "genius", as Schopenhauer says, may try to adjust himself to his times, and to the "artists" and critics of the day...but he will never attain greatness for having done so. His or her "arrogance" allows this de-gravitation, so to speak, from the chauvinism of contemporaneity.
Such folks are not in competition with one's regulars, but are rather in league with the guiding lights of the ages. Fixed stars, not shooting stars.
If one must be arrogant, let it be the kind of arrogance borne of having moved beyond one's own mere life or lifetime. The Mr. Creasotes of the world will eventually eat themselves to death. Not our concern.
I'll end with a quote that could well describe most liberals. It is from a book called, "How to be a Gentleman", by John Bridges.
"A gentleman never makes himself the center of attention. His goal is to make life easier, not just for himself, but for his friends, his acquaintences, and the world at large."
While a Conservative may succeed in getting to the point where friends and acquaintences are included within their sphere of concern...they always, always, fall flat on the last point. It is this point where Liberals go far beyond the current crop of Conservatives...at least among the more outspoken of them (there are always exceptions, of course) and shine as the true gentlemen and gentlewomen of our age, and, at times, all ages.
So rather than try and out-arrogate the RepCons...we can simply continue being the worldly gentlemen and women we are. Win or lose, we set the example, and live it. Simply living it will make for a better world. Is this not a worthy goal? Need we really be in some public driver's seat? The driver's seat is overrated...
The "Driver's Seat" is Overrated
At the end of "Beelezebub's Tales to his Grandson", Gurdjieff makes the following analogy of who and what we are:
Picture a Stagecoach. It is the body, and optimally we will keep it in good working condition...but this is not who we are. Sorry Ahnold!
There is also a Horse which moves the Coach forward. The Horse is our Will and Emotions. But it is not who we are. Sorry Adolph and George!
Then there is the Driver. He tells the Horse where to take the Coach.
The Driver is our brain. But it is not who we are. Sorry, Mr. Roverer!
Say what? We are not our brains either?? What gives?
The West, according to Mr. Gurdjieff -- who, after all had at least a double-digit IQ -- has forgotten the Passenger: The one who tells the Driver where to take him. When the Passenger gets to his destination...he gets out. And we mourn the carriage!
But there will be more carriages. Count on it. SUVs even...especially here in The United States of Biggie-Size-it. But we are not our cars, our carriages, our horses, or our brains. We are, as they say, souls who happen to have a body...not the other way around. For these few...when they die...they really die. But we are the animation; the passenger. And it is here where we all meet and interpenetrate within the supraphenomenal goo; the Eternal Thou; Ethernal Tao; Jones.
The passenger knows no arrogance. Arrogance is reserved for the carriage, the horse and the driver. Drive Miss Lazy! Time is but a material concern.

MANHATTAN--Remember that risible coterie of high-priced media types who posed as people dedicated to "divining the truth" from those impenetrable voter results from Florida?
Well, they finally came out with their own way to distort the truth, and it worked mahvelously! And to time it so that to even bother with it would be as unpatriotic an act as one may venture to entertain in lieu of the potential waves of negativism that one might unwittingly attract, thus form pools of tedium to splash through on their way to da troot. Scrotum.
Seems the article of Mr. Gore Vidal, who parsed and brought to clarity the data n'exist pas*, probably a ripple of the silence resident.
Ah! The silence resident! And the paradise lost!
Bring back the music, the far calls, the swan, O careful ones! Where the muse in the marching boot? Clock, clock, clock, clocking down time -- a rifle, a mitten, a rosebud.

Ralph Reed, the former Christian Coalition executive director and now chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, worked for the company for about 18 months, spread out between 1997 and 2001. He was brought into the Enron fold on the advice of Bush strategist Karl Rove, an Enron stockholder. Most of Reed's work -- in Pennsylvania and two or more other states -- was for direct mail and telephone banks to promote greater choice in electricity service, a source said.

The Democratic Vision
The Democratic Vision
EXCERPT:
Among the Democratic proposals and visions are these:
EXCERPT:
Among the Democratic proposals and visions are these:
Peace - 99% of the world cherishes Peace. Refocus on Peace instead of War. Bill and Jimmy Carter are brought on the re-establish old friendships around the globe, and get back to the thankless task of helping the world to become a peaceful garden of delight, tolerance and sustainability.
Prosperity - Create dynamic new forms of work, such as those described in "The Ecology of Commerce" and touched upon by Al Gore...which focus on activities, engineering and so on that is geared toward improving and cleaning up the environment. Not all work need be pollutive. That much has become abundantly clear. No. It has become abundantly smoggy.
Generosity - What with all the homeless and destitute people left in the wake of "the Bush in a China Store" phenomenon, there will be a huge need for magnanimous individuals, groups and organizations to come forward with ideas, help and relief.
Honesty - It will be the obvious and entirely discernable honesty that will help them to be elected, and it will be honesty that keeps them elected. A most refreshing change! The world throws a party! We have reached the other side of the real bridge to the 21st century. And to think! It WAS meant to be a peaceful century after all!
Forgiveness - All around the world, and even here in America, there is an overwhelming need for forgiveness. To facilitate this, Al and Hill will reach across the aisle and appoint Republicans to Cabinet positions and include them in more meetings. The point being that the problems are so large that neither side can manage it alone...especially when the other side is trying to destroy them.
Reconciliation - Past wounds must be healed. We can set a good example for other peoples, and feel better here at home.
Unity in Diversity - We need to celebrate both our unity and our diversity. There is, in fact, unity IN diversity. We need to remember and speak of this. Solicit the best everyone has to offer. Don't just pay back contributors and forget the rest. And NEVER sit back while a state gets into harms way...as Bush/Cheney did California. (If you don't think blackouts are a danger...read about New York's blackouts!)
Environment: Air, Water, Land - 99% of Americans and Earthlings are in favor of caring for and protecting our precious resources. Those whose activities are destructive must be helped in their attempt to find solutions to the problem. But they surely shouldn't be encouraged to pollute even more, which is essentially the case today.
Conservation - Conserving and gleaning our resources. Conservation will be taught in schools at a young age, and it will be non-controversial and incontrovertible. Oil Companies, for example, don't want people to use less oil. But if they were made responsible for the pollution emitted, they would realize there are more costs than they would have us accept. Air pollution is easier to hide than water and land pollution. We need to wake up to this fact. We will.
Education Reform - Standards are way too low. There is no reason why every child, and indeed adult, can't have as good an education as the few who are so often unappreciative of their now rare opportunity.
Just as Home Offices have flourished and will be encouraged -- as they, (among other things) reduce road traffic, energy use, air pollution and accidents -- so to will home schools and neighborhood schools be afforded the same comforts. I imagine there will be democratic opposition to this at first.
There is no reason that every child couldn't have access to all the available information, including telecourses from our best universities. It is by brains and heart that we will secure our welcome place in the world...and do the best work imaginable.
Preventive Health - As the Babyboom bubble approaches old age, and health care is taxed to the max...it will be necessary to have strong preventive health measures built into our educational opportunities.
The current regime, as manifested in Pharmaceutical Companies and the folks with whom they do business...are probably not all that keen on people being healthy. What if everyone were always healthy? It could happen! We do not really want them to stay in business if it means we must get sick for them. Why they even invent illnesses. Need to focus more on health and care. We'll have a lot more money to do good in the world.
Sustainability - We must realize that we cannot grow ad infinitum. There is great beauty and simplicity in sustainable economies and lifestyles. This will help stabilize and maintain the earth's remaining resources.
Alternative Energies - By now people are sick of propping up the Cheneys of the world. Alternative Energy will be given a priroity heretofore unimaginable. And it will be welcome, nay, applauded!
Advanced Transportation Systems - Europe and Asia are way ahead of us on this. We need, and will encourage and develop cleaner, faster, safer, even more beautiful and lasting forms of transportation.
Humanitarian Superpower - World Relief, Philanthropy... Our national stock will rise to the extent that we move from a mere financial and military superpower and become a humanitarian superpower. We can do it, and will...if we only have the will.
Transparency of Government & Business - Along with accountability, transparency wil become a lost best friend...who returns, much to the people's delight and applause. The current trend will continue, and eventually the untrustworthy will be weeded out, if not locked up.
Except for the most sensitive of matters, there will be clear accounting and accountability. One can see where their taxes are being spent or invested on the internet. The government will actively solicit ideas for better and better ways of doing things while reducing waste on an ongoing basis.
The Low Road - The Low Road is an ancient Chinese concept which means the road of helping others...as opposed to the road of self aggrandizement. Of course this can't be legislated, but it can be introduced into the national dialogue. With such great losses in wealth, people need to know that there are better things to life than great wealth. This will be a form of preventive health, and an enhancer to the quality of life of Americans.
Reciprocal Maintenence - It will be imperative to move from a model of reciprocal destruction to the more healthy and natural model of reciprocal maintenence.
Non-Profits - Non-profit organizations will become all the rage, as profit loses it carotene. Just thought I'd say that!
Smart Military - As the richer nations refocus their attention on giving a helping hand to the poor and needy, there will be less reason for people to want us dead. I'm too tired to develop this idea, but, although needed, it needn't be so wasteful and killerly.
Villages - Rather than having neighbors spying on neigbors, Hillary will present ideas and work toward creating and maintaining communities wherein neighbors once again know one another and help one another. "Trust the people" as Bush USED to say. When neighbors help neighbors, there is less likelihood for crime or terrorism. Again...preventive health...on a social scale.

When the feds swoop down and cuff racketeers, they also load the vans with all the perp's ill-gotten gains: stacks of cash, BMWs, whatever. Their associates have to cough up the goodies too: lady friends must give up their diamond rocks.
Under the racketeering law, RICO, even before a verdict, anything
bought with the proceeds of the crime goes into the public treasury.
But there seems to be special treatment afforded those who loaded up on the 'bennies' of Ken Lay's crimes. If the G-men don't know where the tainted loot is cached, try this address: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Ask for George or Dick.

Edwards Prescient on 9/11..unlike Bush
Edwards Prescient on 9/11...unlike Bush:
"In the summer of 2001, when much of the Republican and Democratic policy community was obsessed with missile defense, Edwards urged more attention to terrorism. The North Carolina senator had such limited luck pitching an OpEd article on terrorism to major newspapers that the piece, warning of poor cooperation among federal and local law enforcement, ended up in the weekly Littleton Observer, circulation 2,230 -- four weeks before the Sept. 11 attacks. Media Wars : FOX to prove CNN and MSNBC are biased
Media Wars : FOX to prove CNN and MSNBC are biased
A new documentary claiming to show Republican bias at FOX NEWS will debut in New York City on Monday. But FOX NEWS executives are preparing to hit back hard -- if rivals self-servingly hype the film!
The DRUDGE REPORT has learned that FOX NEWS executives are lining up a parade of employees who formerly worked at CNN & MSNBC and have been downloading information on how editorial decisions are made at these networks, including the agenda for how stories are supposed to be covered.
A senior FOX NEWS executive tells DRUDGE: "We have enough ammunition to nail both MSNBC & CNN." Sources say FOX is prepared to go public with these accounts if necessary.
This should be interesting...
Maybe FOX can successfully shake then from their tailfeathers, and CNN and MSNBC can actually become impartial, as their duty should dictate...

Historians vs. George W. Bush
Historians vs. George W. Bush
Of 415 historians who expressed a view of President Bush’s administration to this point as a success or failure, 338 classified it as a failure and 77 as a success. (Moreover, it seems likely that at least eight of those who said it is a success were being sarcastic, since seven said Bush’s presidency is only the best since Clinton’s and one named Millard Fillmore.) Twelve percent of all the historians who responded rate the current presidency the worst in all of American history, not too far behind the 19 percent who see it at this point as an overall success.

John-John Aid Concert to be greatest in history of world
John-John Aid Concert to be greatest in history of world
You have your Farm Aid and your other aids, all geared toward bringing in money and attention to a specific cause...so why not take on many causes at once, and give a concert for those who can help all the great humanitarian causes?
Well, it has begun, with last night's show of diversity and talent at Radio City Music Hall, but it is not over. I hope and predict that the Dream Team will attract a Dream Concert which will amass the greatest artists and musicians of our day...the world over. Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Phillip Glass Ensemble, Radiohead, Eels, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Psycho Serious, Naked Karma, The Shins, Fripp & Eno, Thompson Twins, Joanne Shenandoah, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Beth Orton, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Youngbloods, Turtles, Buffalo Springfield, Patti Smith, Gorecki, Arvo Part, Morton Subotnick, Josh Joplin, Josh Grobin, Andrea Bocelli, Scott Truel, Chris Chalfant, Steve Reich, Gryphon, Talking Heads, Van Der Graff Generator, Faust, Jim Beckwith & Native Vibe, Frocky Jack, Megajesus, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard, This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Willie Nelson, Dixie Chicks, Atomic Rooster, PFM, Mother Whale Eyeless, Cream, Aborted Mozarts, Iron Butterfly, Traffic, Led Zeppelin, Byrds, Yardbirds, Beck, Jeff Beck, and so on...
Last night's fundraiser brought out such shining lights as Paul Newman, Meryl Streep and Whoopie Goldberg...as well as a host of other brave and wondrous souls...who needn't apologize that they are not Dennis Miller, Ted Nugent or Lee Greenwood.
