"Currently, for web users over the age of 25, Adult Entertainment still ranks high in popularity, coming in second, after search engines. Not so for 18- to 24-year-olds, for whom social networks rank first, followed by search engines, then web-based e-mail — with porn sites lagging behind in fourth. If you chart the rate of visits to social-networking sites against those to adult sites over the last two years, there appears to be a strong negative correlation (i.e., visits to social networks go up as visits to adult sites go down). "
It seems that social-networking sites have not only usurped porn in popularity, but they've also gobbled up time Gen Y-ers used to spend on traditional e-mail and IM. When you can reach all of your friends through Facebook or MySpace, there's little reason to spend time in your old-school inbox. So, if social networking is becoming e-mail 2.0, then perhaps Microsoft's recent $240 million dollar payout for such a small stake in Facebook isn't that ridiculous.
The reality is that Facebook isn't just for kids. Last week — and this was a highlight — my dad, who just turned 75, added me as a friend on Facebook."

"Saint" Tancredo's Wall Spares Mexicans the Fiery Katrina
Tom Tancredo is being hailed as a saint for his visionary mercy when he created the wall that spared the lives of millions of Mexicans from the fiery Katrina that is engulfing much of their northern neighbor.

I love films. Well, many of them. And I loved most of the ones I saw during the ConvergeSouth Film Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina this weekend.
As I was watching, instead of having AFV pop to mind, I had flashes of Bunuel, Rouch, Dziga Vertov, Man Ray, Woman Rhea, Richter, Melies, Lumiere, Cocteau, Cockfinger, Eisenstein, and some of the pioneers of avant-garde cinema whack me across the glasses in Potemkian montage sequences, as my mind tumbled down the steps of ontological approval like a perambulator adrift on the gravity of pregnant steps of Odessa.

A blogger conference, like a movie, has 3 stages: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production. We are now in the Post-Production phase...and are seeking the help of those who may not have participated so fully in the other two phases.
Gathering, organizing and archiving photos, words, videos, music and such would be very useful...both for ConvergeSouth '07, as well as for future Converges.

THE GATHERING OF THE FIFTH ESTATE
As the blognoscenti of The Fifth Estate gathered, I realized that it was going to be impossible to spend quality time with everyone, but I am glad that I did get some quality time with some quality folk, in particular, David Hoggard, Jay Ovittore, Dr. Sue, Michael Habib, Bora Zivkovic, David Jordan, Scott and Barbara Nelles, Stew Pittman, Billy the Wordjones, Dan Conover, Lex Alexander, Fec Stench, Brandon Gross, Saskia Wilson-Brown, Robert Reddick, and a few others. Some, like Ben Hwang and Ed Cone were always on the move, and thus hard to trap into a long discussion on what's next.

Charlotte is typically very lovely in April and May, which is roughly six months from now. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has a new campus dedicated to Information Technology, which auspiciousoly lies at the north side of Charlotte, very close to I-85, from whence most people from the Triad and Triangle would be coming. Seems like such an event might serve both institutions well.

funny thing happened this weekend, beginning on Friday. While the stock market was going to shit, hominids were gathering in North Carolina to break the drought that was long plaguing the state. The impact was instantaneous and widespread.
Rain soaked the area represented by these holy blogger/rainpersons, and earth and heaven were once again speaking.

As the blognoscenti of The Fifth Estate gathered, I realized that it was going to be impossible to spend quality time with everyone, but I am glad that I did get some quality time with some quality folk, in particular, David Hoggard, Jay Ovittore, Dr. Sue, Michael Habib, Bora Zivkovic, David Jordan, Scott and Barbara Nelles, Stew Pittman, Billy the Wordjones, Dan Conover, Lex Alexander, Fec Stench, Brandon Gross, Saskia Wilson-Brown, Robert Reddick, and a few others. Some, like Ben Hwang and Ed Cone were always on the move, and thus hard to trap into a long discussion on what's next.

I am pondering a notion from the mind of Joe Killian, who wondered why these events could not happen twice a year...
UNCC college of Computers and Informatics Campus
Charlotte is typically very lovely in April and May, which is roughly six months from now. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has a new campus dedicated to Information Technology, which auspiciousoly lies at the north side of Charlotte, very close to I-85, from whence most people from the Triad and Triangle would be coming. Seems like such an event might serve both institutions well.

Nearby is University Place, where people can stay, and party...and also NODA, charlotte's vibrant art district, which has venues for music, film, art, and good food. Again, this would serve both institutions well...

Flight from other cities around the world are available, media coverage from the Charlotte Observer, sponsorship from Bank of America, Wachovia, BMW, and other deep pockets might be available...and Lord knows the city is always looking to promote the image of it being a state-of-the-art, world-class city. As I said also to Saskia and Brandon of Current TV and San Francisco...Charlotte's god in chief, Hugh McColl, loved San Francisco, and wanted to bring the best of that city to Charlotte. Among the projects he is involved with is the Echo Foundation, founded by Elie Wiesel and, i believe, headquartered in Charlotte.
Charlotte also has telemedicine, and is making great headway in holistic medicine...with Stewart Brand's recent involvement in the creation of a new holistic, hospital, replete with Feng Shui gardens, waterfalls, and much else besides. Surely an interesting topic for discussion... Perhaps health can be at the center of discussion, but maybe also other aspects of life for which the city is known, like investments, banking, business, sports...and these other quotidian, yet necessary, arenas.

Gore Peace Prize Stolen by Bush Inc.
Hans W. Bush, a cousin of the Resident, has pulled a few strings, and it appears that the Nobel Peace Prize is now going to go to George W. Bush, kleptomaniac -- who now insists on being called "The Prince of Peace".
When asked what he was going to do with the prize, Mr. Bush said he would like to use it as a pretext to go to war with Iran, Syria, Turkey, Blogistan, Amsterdam, and Paris. Maybe Atlantis. "But first, i think I need to clear some tumbleweeds back in Crawford. Let my brain rest a bit. Peace is hard work. Hard." And when asked what the future might bring, Bush said that he was still hoping for Baseball Commissioner.
Back at CurrentTV headquarters, Al Gore is fending off rumours that he was trying to steal the coveted prize from Bush, and an ad hoc panel of impartial Floridians told Frank Luntz that Gore should just move on. "If Bush has the prize, it's obvious he won it!", said one of the pathetic fascists.

Hillary, Lieberman & Bush: Their Push for War with Iran is Tipping Point
Strange bedfellowsJohn Edwards said it best. He and Hillary learned entirely different lessons from the Iraq War. And now that Hillary has joined Lieberman, Bush and the PNAC neo-cons to take those first steps toward war with Iran...her departure from real Americans is complete. And Obama's failure to even vote may well serve as a tipping point for him too.

My understanding of the Revolutionary Guard in Iran is that it is
promoting terrorism. It is manufacturing weapons that are used
against our troops in Iraq. It is certainly the main agent of support

And in what we voted for today, we will have an opportunity to
designate it as a terrorist organization which gives us the options to
be able to impose sanctions on the primary leaders to try to begin to
put some teeth into all this talk about dealing with Iran.
We wouldn't be where we are today if the Bush administration
hadn't outsourced our diplomacy with respect to Iran and ignored Iran
and called it part of the axis of evil. Now we've got to make up for
lost time and lost ground...
EDWARDS: But I want to come back to a discussion that took place a few
minutes ago to make everyone understands what Senator Gravel is
talking and Senator Clinton was talking about. Because there was a
very important vote cast in the United States Senate today. And it
was, basically, in a resolution calling the Iranian Revolutionary
Guard a terrorist organization.
I voted for this war in Iraq, and I was wrong to vote for this
war. And I accept responsibility for that. Senator Clinton also
voted for this war.
We learned a very different lesson from that. I have
no intention of giving George Bush the authority to take the first
step on a road to war with Iran.
And I think that vote today, which Senator Biden and Senator Dodd
voted against, and they were correct to vote against it, is a clear
indication of the approach that all of us would take with the
situation in Iran because what I learned in my vote on Iraq was you
cannot give this president the authority and you can't even give him
the first step in that authority because he cannot be trusted. And
that resolution that was voted on today was a very clear indication...

So while waiting, Chairman Skelton, who must've forgotten that his OWN mic was ON...said (about some demonstrators); "That really pisses me off, Hunter." to which Duncan Hunter said: "What", to whom Skelton replied "Those assholes".

Republican debate: Is Fred Thompson a Transcendent God?
Face it. Everybody knows that the urge to war is what the Bible calls "The Satanic Urge", and that most of the Republicans are infected with it. Ron Paul is the laudible exception. But alas, he is not so smallweenied as his wan semaphors and toothshiners, who, at best, are lazy on Peace.
LAZY ON PEACE
So why are the Republicans lazy on Peace? Is it related to the Satanic Urge? Or is it more a matter of the profits they are making off of the acting out of the Satanic Urge?
Last night, while Ron Paul was winning the debate, Fred Thompson was fast asleep, having finished his job at Leno, where he disrespected Jay by walking off the stage in front of him, before the proper time. And why was he hunched over like a cave man? Is he really just a product placement for the new cavemen TV series? Let's ask Chompsky...

By representing the atavists and the simians, Metatron Thompson hovers under, not over, his Republican inferiors, and taunts them with every grunt, which echoes through their hindbrains like Craig and the daily embarrassment.

Luciano More: The Death of Pavarotti
I'm sad to hear that a great man has died today. Luciano Pavarotti, the most famous tenor in the world, and one of the greatest of humanitarians. Before there was Andrea Bocelli, there was Luciano the Light.
His 1982 Movie, "Yes, Georgio" happened to be the first movie I got to be in (I wind up as an extra in this, Black Rainbow, Toy Soldiers, and I think one more -- lotsa fun, you oughtta try it!) Anyway, in "Yes, Georgio", my role was to be an audience member at one of Georgio's concerts, which happened to occur at Boston's Hatch Shell -- named after Orrin and Richard Hatch, the Nudist Survivor. I suspect that if you get an electron microscope, you might be able to spot me in the crowd. I was near Fiedler's Head, although I'm not sure it was even there at the time. If it WAS there, it too was enjoying the music and festive jocularity. That is, if Arthur's spirit had any say in the matter, which, according to Science, it does.
May Luciano's spirit soar higher than the music he has brought to our thirsty earth, and may he rest among kindred spirits.

The Man from Hemp
HEMP, NC
Bill Clinton was known as The Man from Hope, as that was where he grew up...in Hope, Arkansas. John Edwards is The Man from Hemp...and no, I don't mean marijuana. I mean Hemp...a small town in North Carolina whose current name happens to be Robbins.
Hemp was not the first name of Robbins though. The town of Robbins began in 1795 when Alexander Kennedy, a revolutionary war soldier (who happens to be my 5th great-grandfather, and the son of John Kennedy, the immigrant), settled in the area and established what would become the largest gun factory in the South. It is a testament to the American Spirit that a small-town boy can, through hard and good work, rise to become the de facto leader of the world. I, for one, think the world would be well served.
Bill Clinton was known as The Man from Hope, as that was where he grew up...in Hope, Arkansas. John Edwards is The Man from Hemp...and no, I don't mean marijuana. I mean Hemp...a small town in North Carolina whose current name happens to be Robbins.
Hemp was not the first name of Robbins though. The town of Robbins began in 1795 when Alexander Kennedy, a revolutionary war soldier (who happens to be my 5th great-grandfather, and the son of John Kennedy, the immigrant), settled in the area and established what would become the largest gun factory in the South. According to a Mr. Dante, there is a ring of Hell reserved for opportunists, and after seeing this report, I can't help but think this one-trick pony is a major candidate for inclusion therein.
Basking in the adoration of the media circus, Mr. Giuliani, it turns out, was little more than, say, Michael Brown, who did a "Helluva job" during Katrina.

Our trustworthy president, the Reverend Mister Bush, glazed with his usual ability to make the wrong decision, decided to spend the last nickle of political capital on a free ride for the grown-up called Scooter -- a man, I might add, whose judgement is so flawed that he thought it perfectly reasonable to subordinate himself to Dick Cheney.
Should Javier have pardoned Jean Valjean? Mais bien sur! But Libby is no Valjean, although Bush may well be Javier, had he only an addiction to the law, cool hair and a voice to die for. Well, maybe he does have a voice to die for. Many are doing it, and he is still talking. Well, I think you call it talk. I call it the new dictation.

Symphonic Music by David Beckwith
Not long ago it dawned on me to stitch together some of my more memorable symphonic works into what the young'uns might call a CD, were they given that opportunity. And so here it is... Symphonic Music by David K Beckwith. (There are an astonishing number of other David Beckwiths out there, hence the K. And no, I'm not David Kaye, although I appreciate his contributions to the world.)
I'm having a problem settling on names for some of the tunes, and would certain love to hear suggestions. Some songs, like "God Breathing" and "How God Evolves" are likely to stay put, since they so nearly hit the mark, but all the others are open for change. Moreover, the songs themselves are open for collaboration. If you want to lay tracks over it...feel free. Most of the music was channeled anyway. Once I get the ego out of the way, then the so-called spirit of music, the muses, or what-have-you, come to play, using my fingers to do their dance. It is a flowing snapshot, for the ear, of the moment. Eternity packaged in a droplet. Soundtrack of the River of Life. Music at its most bla bla bla...
Whatever.

Sundry thoughts on the debates
After watching the Democrats and Republicans debate, a few notions arise, or at least they did in me. It is doubtful that much difference has been made as yet, and that "things on the ground" will probably play a much larger role as the election time nears.
Surely the most troubling moment in both debates came when Duncan Hunter talked about preemptive nuclear war. This is clearly the opposite of how we need to be thinking about our future role in the world, since it is, essentially, George W. Bush on steroids -- digging the hole much faster and deeper than the speed of life can sustain. Backward, backward and did I say backward? And I'm talking caveman backward.
Speaking of which...how about all those admittedly unevolved hominids on the Republican ticket? Nature, you will recall, evolves us human beings to a certain point, after which we must consciously evolve ourselves...but some of these risible atavists even go so far as to deny the very process -- thinking, incorrectly, that it somehow disallows the existence of God. Democrats should not be burdened by such clabber and keep evolving their and our minds and beings.
Look. REpublicans are REactionary. Some are even REprobates. But they will now admit that the current administration was and is sorely lacking in the idea or vision department. And without ideas or vision...one is only reactionary.
But look at the Democrats. While the Republicans continue their fear mongering while banging the tired and overspent war drum, the Democrats are creating the future, which is, at first, but a vision. But a vision is, alas, what a nation most needs, for without one it will perish. Just ask the Bible. Solomon, I believe. It's been a while. I also like the one that says: "I shall not want." I like Davids.
It is refreshing to hear Republicans talking about alternative energy, and I believe one or two can see that creating "the new way" can mean thousands of new, currently nonexistent, jobs. It will also, in many instances, decrease our impact on global warming.
Chances are any number of the candidates, on either side, would be better than the current officeholders. The question is: Who has the clearest vision for leading us out of the Hell that we have foisted upon the world.
The Democrats certainly have the friendlier vision.

Chances are any number of the candidates, on either side, would be better than the current officeholders. The question is: Who has the clearest vision for leading us out of the Hell that we have foisted upon the world.
The Democrats certainly have the friendlier vision.

Woods Wins Wachovia
I had a long talk with my fair city of Charlotte, and she agrees. Tiger Woods should move to Charlotte. At least buy a house here. We got golf. Plenty of golf. And good golf! In fact the whole state has golf, just not in the counties that parade their illustrious hog waste lagoons. Mecklenburg is not one of those.
As a Charlottean, I'd like to congratulate Mister Woods on his fine victory, which happened to occur one year after his beloved father had made his way to deeper greens...which, incidentally was why he could not attend last year's Wachovia tournament.
So Tiger, I implore you. Put an anchor down here in this fair city and state. I swear you will not regret it. And if your bud, Michael Jordan has not yet seized an anchor, why not invite him too. In fact, you can invite Vijay, Phil and the other fine players to do the same. Surely you have the funds. And there are scores of wondrous estates from which to choose. Many within walking distance of the Quail Hollow club.
I think you will find, if you haven't already, that Charlotte's elites are good people, in the main. Practically as good as us common folk. They are also charitable and progressive, with a real sense of stewardship. Much like yourself, I should think.
Again, congratulations...to you and all the players. And thanks for bringing a little magic to Charlotte.
