Tears of a Legend

Here's the final version of a piece I posted as a work in progress - I ended up cutting out a piece from a Chinese Checkers board and gluing it over her eyes. Just in the city today, taking my work around in the Mission district. One of the stores I visited was Viracocha, whose owner sells interesting salvaged and reconstituted home furnishings to fund small-scale artistic productions, music and poetry, in the downstairs. Very sweet. I had been sent there by one of the proprietors of the Curiosity Shoppe, another wonderful Mission enterprise.

How can I make this rose better?

Creatives never rest. Or is it that they are always restless?

Results may vary.

I usually link to visuals, but this post on Bloggertropolis is pretty amazing.

Life can't always be like that

If life were always like that, it wouldn't feel like that. Besides, it would be kitsch.

And yet, I have a sneaking envy for this china bunny.

For those who don't know the Dorothy Parker verse:

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Romania.

No current romantic disappointments, just fits....

The Child Raised by Wolves

One of a small ( they are 5" high by 3 inches wide) series of nine curiosities I made by affixing bits of nature found on the ground to antique photos. Four more from the series on Tinytheatre.

On gerdiary, Heike is participating in an interesting memorial project. Those who enjoy stitching- or gluing- might want to add their own wings.

Life in Oakland

Friend or Food?

Coming up roses - The original sign had been placed on the lawn before the vote in November 2008, Prop 8 was struck down in court on August 4 of this year.

Now THIS is perverse...sign in the window of Weight Watchers (KFC may have topped them by jumping on the pink ribbon bandwagon a few months back, apparently the Colonel Cares).

Vienna in Oakland...

This post is for Nature's Whispers Sharing Treasures (although possibly these are oddities rather than treasures).

The Enchanted Cravat

I showed this to a gallery owner, we were speculating as to whether the curls were placed in to this beautiful young man's hair (by spitcurling?), or whether most of his hair was flattened and only the curls at front left in their natural state. Can you see Johnny Depp in him?

By the way, has anyone seen Cairo Time? Mina insists that this is not about a romance or sexual attraction, but about a certain intimacy in communicating which doesn't exist in the West. I'm interested in opinions...

Poppy Girl

This is my favorite of the altered postcards my sister brought me.

...having a yard sale if you're in that sort of neighborhood. My neighbor and I met nice young couples, chatted with the dotty old lady who walks around –and around– the block, and tried to persuade cynics of the veracity of our signage ("Napoleon commissioned Michelangelo to make this for his Palace at Versailles"). A man on his way to the racetrack bought Mr. Moneybags (above) for luck ("He's made me rich, now it's your turn - $1.00. Cheap!"). The green thing in the front is some sort of demonic-looking green pig, not sure what it's meant to be for, although I invited opinion.

The high point came when I spotted a woman across the street with her little dog running around - a few weeks ago, I was outside talking to neighbor Carlos and we saw this same dog get run over, its pelvis was shattered. It appeared to be very lively and in good spirits. The woman gave me her card so Carlos could call and hear the story.

Above, from a dress my neighbor had out - I am going to incorporate this as a dandy's wild cravat in one of my painted photos. I think I need to leave his face showing, he looks like Johnny Depp - you'll see. It is reminiscent of Eva's Tatzelwurm, I think - the pattern, not the the photo.

Were we naive?

The way we were going to live in the future...

I'm calling this one Atomic House. Was the cold fusion error the last gasp of that dream, the consequence-free glide of technology, cutting through the materiality of everyday life? Considering that the idea of man's complete control over the material (AKA inferior because non-spiritual) world goes back at least as far as the philosopher's stone and transmuting lead into gold...

Nah, don't think so.
