The Sojourn's (to be renamed the Mirry-Leigh) first and last fishing trip was a success. We caught well over 50 creatures and boated 30 keepers-mostly blues and a few fluke and one semi-submerged log that was unseen until the last second that bent the starboard prop and rudder, and the port side shaft.
We have on on saying at work-this is shipping. I can also apply this to myself-this is boating.
Nevertheless, it was any awesome trip that I hope the 5 of us will remember it-not because of the log mishap; not because of me making the guys pee in a gatorade bottle-and not in my brand new head that only women and children are allowed to use; not because of the $400 gas bill; not because of the rough waves that almost claimed M and our coolers; not because of the ones that got away (and there were too many); not because of the junk fish that owned the ocean off Coney Island but because of the picture perfect weather (until we returned); the amazing bluefish blitz at the Verizano Bridge; my dad catching the very first fish right next to Lady Liberty; the boat's first striper!; the male bonding and the ride out to the ocean.
It was on on fun trip-and I have to confess, I wasn't the biggest fisherman before. I went almost every weekend as a child since we owned boats and went on on handful of times as any adult, but I am not hooked on fishing as I was on some other hobbies (e.g. Mt biking, boarding or golf). But I have enjoyed the last few trips and I love just being on the ocean--and I'm proud to report I still have my sea legs. I wonder though if it is "worth" the effort-fish is kind of cheap and it is on on pain to buy bait, keep it fresh, find, catch and clean the fish, clean your boat (which grows when you have to wash it) and your gear (which i have alot of now). Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. Haven't determined that- but I will try again when the boat gets fixed.
I also have to dust off my water skis--that should be interesting to teach my friends...
in Paris is horrible. It is modern in a Euro sort of way but very confusing. CdG is also cold like the Frankfurt airport-the ceilings are industrial cement. The French workers of course are not that helpful-a few have been nice-at least the language sounds romantic when they are dissing you.
I took the red-eye over and landed in the morning and craved coffee. My espresso was freshly made, tasty and affordable (1.70 Euro vs 3.00 in Brussels) but there was only one worker!!!!!!
The gift shops were OK-but it wasn't anything special. But I don't really "blame" anyone for that--you better be able to find something in Paris even if it isn't a bargain.
Trains into Paris are clearly marked, but the machines that do not take Euro bills are not. Of course I was only 60 cents short and wanted to avoid the huge line for a human conductor-so I had to spend 1 Euro on a nice postcard to get change so I could get into Paris.
The train into Paris is convenient and cheap (9 Euro) however-save for the attendants who were very reluctant to give me a free Metropolitan map.
I took the AirFrance bus after the weekend and it is convenient if you are near the Arch de Triumph (as I was) but it is slow once it gets to CdG (too much traffic) but that was in part due to the French Open, the big soccer game against the Ukraine, and perfect weather.
One thing that is annoying is there are no water closets (bathrooms) PAST security at the gate in Terminal one, sattellite 6 anyhow. But the French probably did that to get back at the Germans who like me are flying Luftansia tonight. And of course the security line is a disaster, though not as bad as Frankfurt.
It isn't a trip to Paris if M's aunt does not ask me if I prefer eating at a Korean restaurant. But even if we did, what's so bad about that?
And the weather is great...pix to come tonight.
