Abe Kōzan (Abe Zenzō) was born on February 6, 1892 in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, to a family that had worked in the clothing business for several generations. A talented student, he graduated from Bungo Junior High School in June, 1911, and immediately volunteered to join the 72nd Infantry Regiment of Oita, eventually becoming an infantry sergeant and being chosen for commission as an officer. During the time of his officer training, he also began his shakuhachi studies under Beppu's local Tozan-ryū master, Matsuoka Seizan, and with his guidance, completed the Chuden rank and earned the bamboo name Seikun. In 1914, he lost his father and, with the unavoidable need to sort out his household affairs, he gathered up his family and moved to Tokyo, where he resolved to dedicate himself to shakuhachi music. In April 1915, through an introduction from Matsuoka-sensei, he became an uchi-deshi (live-in apprentice) to Wakejima Yōzan of Okayama, devoting himself to his shakuhachi training, and also worked at banks and the city hall as a side job. In February 1918, when Wakejima-sensei passed away, he became a student of the Sōke (head of the school), Nakao Tozan and, after receiving his license to teach, he became instructor to his late mentor's remaining students, took the reigns of the Sagiri-kai, and continued Wakejima’s legacy. In March 1918, he was promoted to Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) and took the professional name Kōzan. In October 1922, he was promoted to Shihan (master). Two years later, in April 1924, he accompanied the Sōke on an Eastern tour, opening a school in Tokyo. In January 1927, he was appointed head of the Tokyo branch of the Tozan-ryū, and was also re-elected as aTozan-ryū council member. In October 1928, in recognition of his achievements and devotion to the school, he was promoted to the rank of Dai-Shihan (grand master) and granted the title of Chikurin-ken.
