Thosai Cafe, Mutiara Damansara

With 70 types of thosai recipes in its repertoire, Thosai Cafe totally lives up to its name, masterminded by a mix of friends from both Malaysia and India, specifically Bangalore. Try the Paneer Mysore Masala Thosai, flavourfully packed with housemade cottage cheese, potato masala, freshly grated beetroot and vegetables, prepared hot to order (RM10). Thosai Cafe takes pride in its thosai, so each portion is served openly to showcase everything that's in the stuffing - Mindy and Kamala would very likely endorse this.

Thosai Cafe
K-G19-W, The Curve Mall, Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, 47800 Selangor. Open Mon-Sun, 10am-10pm. Tel: 014-711-8902

I Love Pho @ IPC Shopping Centre

The first Malaysian spin-off of Melbourne's I Love Pho (with branches in Richmond, Abbotsford and Melbourne Emporium) has landed at Mutiara Damansara's IPC Shopping Centre. Most of the original Melbourne menu remains encouragingly intact here; order one of the combination pho bowls - a classic bovine brew of sliced beef, brisket, beef balls, tendon and tripe (RM22) or an interesting poultry potpourri of shredded chicken, chicken giblets, heart and liver (RM20). Note that I Love Pho's broths may taste relatively mild and mellow, especially for the chicken.

Suds & Lattes @ Mutiara Damansara

Suds & Lattes aims to rinse your clothes & cleanse your palate, combining a laundry business & a cafe. The latter serves up specialities like sandwiches of turkey ham with lingonberry jam & tacos of sriracha shrimp with fries (prices for most of the kitchen's offerings hover around RM20), prepared to order, served perhaps a little faster than a spin cycle. True to the venue's name, lattes take on equal prominence, with coffee beans sourced from PULP & green tea by Niko Neko Matcha (RM11 each).

Suds & Lattes
3-1, Jalan PJU 7/7A, Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Tues-Sun, 10am-10pm. Tel:  03-7732-1771

The Scarlet @ eCurve

No food was served but the booze was potent enough to slay a (small) herd of elephants.

Throw Me Down And Fuck Me (glenmorangie 10 years, southern comfort, pineapple juice, grenadine syrup) & Bin Laden (JW black label, belvedere pure vodka, spiced rum).

Scarlett Johansson Smoothie (banana, coffee, big island banana rum, kahlua, dark rum, yogurt, milk, cinnamon powder) and Bitches From Hell (sambuca, creme de banana, milk).

Outpost Cafe @ Mutiara Damansara

The kind of place that could have been my favourite hangout 15-20 years ago.

In line with the current Star Trek mania, there are several novelty items on the menu, including this Transporter Pad, comprising pancakes, ice cream and peaches. Not bad at all.

Mango Smoothie and a thick, creamy Nutrimeal French Vanilla Milkshake with "vitamin shots." One of the best milkshakes in the Klang Valley!

Senjyu Sushi @ Mutiara Damansara

Senjyu Sushi's Cineleisure branch seems slightly more spacious than the one at Sunway Pyramid. But whichever outlet you choose, temptations galore adorn the menu.

Unagi handrolls, a real steal at a promo price of RM 1 apiece.

Hiyayako (cold tofu) with disappointingly puny slices of foie gras.

Aburi Wagyu beef sushi. A tasty choice, but not top-grade Wagyu of course.

Grilled minced chicken and quail egg wrapped in seaweed.

Mini sushi cake with layers of salmon, avocado and tuna topped with prawn.

Fish roe-coated sushi stuffed with omelette and unagi, topped with foie gras.

Sushi rice balls wrapped with wagyu beef, topped with foie gras and avocado. Yep, we couldn't resist ordering anything with foie gras.

Sushi rice rolled with cucumber sticks, topped with soft shell crab and cod roe.

Spicy salmon mayo maki topped with cheese slices and bonito flakes.

Beer sorbet. The taste of beer was pretty powerful.

Rock salt ice cream. Loved this; the salty, creamy blend was wonderful.

Sakae Izakaya Special (sake, umeshu, sparkling syrup) and Kabuki Dream (umeshu, rum, grapefruit juice and grenadine).

Chocolate Goddess (sake and chocolate sauce) and Misty Fuji (shochu, sake genmai tea, honey, lemon juice and sprite).
