Luckee Canteen, Puchong

With mannequin torsos at the entrance, a barren autumnal tree and friendly skeletons waving inside, plus bicycles perched high on the wall, Luckee Canteen is a fortunate find, a new cafe that’s both head-turning and head-scratching.

But its food is ultimately ultra-comforting, from the pork lard crackling rice with a wobbly-yolked egg (RM16) to the fab fried chicken with sour plum flavourfully infused in the batter (RM18).

The crew is friendly and the setting is relaxing, with La Mer and La Vie En Rose playing on the speakers, bringing a bit of Paris to Puchong.

Luckee Canteen
6, Jalan Bandar 13, Pusat Bandar Puchong, 47100 Puchong, Selangor. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-530pm. Tel: 010-236-3260

Huo Flamethrower BBQ, Puchong

The heat is on for fans of red meat in Puchong: Huo Flamethrower BBQ offers sous-vide beef finished by torching, furnishing that final sear with a flourish for a satisfactory steak.

You'll find various cuts here, including MB5 rib eyes and MB7 briskets. But for tighter budgets, Angus is available too: We couldn't resist the Brazilians' most prized cut, the picanha - also known as rump cap - smoothly tender with a relatively robust meaty flavour, topped off with melted garlic butter and a side of kosher salt and salad leaves (RM80).

Huo Flamethrower BBQ is one of various F&B businesses operating in Puchong's Jam Factory restaurant.

Dutch babies and doggies: Snack on puffed pancakes while cuddling up with C'est La Vie's eight-month-old resident poodle, Pikapi, and cooing at rescue pups in this pet-friendly, people-friendly cafe, whose beauty is more than skin-deep.

C'est La Vie's Dutch baby pancake is a hot-on-the-pan, fresh-and-eggy treat that channels Big Breakfasts, blanketed with beans, sausage, mushrooms and bacon (RM25). Also interesting are the scones, more savoury than sweet, rustically textured, layered with a choice of cream in flavours like Earl Grey or salted egg yolk.
