Dog Days of Summer

Otis has been very lucky and has gotten to play with lots of new dog friends over the last couple of weeks. He is a really social guy and loves to be chased by much bigger dogs. He spent the afternoon getting acquainted with Kenzie, W & K's new 6 month old puppy who is so happy and cute.

My favorite look of the day
Otis is a loudmouth. Look at Kenzie's ears!
They can seriously chase each other around the yard all day long

Sunday Brunch on the Patio with the Dogs

First white peaches of the season from the farmer's market (a little sour), chilaquiles and coffee
Now that the weather is heating up ever so slightly, we're back to our Sunday brunches out on the patio by the pool. It's a nice way to spend a leisurely morning and hang with the dogs. K. made some chilaquiles, the best way to use up leftovers, with some nachos from Tacomiendo, as well as the roasted tomato salsa that I made for the Memorial Day bbq. Through the week, we've actually managed to finish most of the leftovers from the bbq, which is great, since I hate wasting food.

Fun with Otis and Floyd:
Otis loves peaches (well really, any food)
Handsome snaggle tooth
Rather pensive
Daily cleaning by Floyd
Otis isn't scared by much, but he was barking and growling at the decapitated Hello Kitty
Floyd has no fear and just wants to clean its ear
Typical Floyd with his wonky ear

Calypso St. Barth for Target Launch Review

The maxi dress is my favorite piece; I love the colors, pattern, and flared tier at the bottom, the cotton is soft and the dress is lined, very comfortable and the perfect length
N. and I woke up bright and early today and headed to the Target on La Cienega to check out the release of the Calypso St. Barth and Target designer collaboration. We met at the Lanvin x H&M launch, so I knew she was one of the few people who wouldn't think it was crazy to wake up at 7am on a Sunday. The weather this weekend has been warm and gorgeous; definitely the perfect weather for the Calypso lifestyle. We arrived a little bit after the store opened at 8am and there was a ton of stock in all sizes. The collection is huge; lots of apparel including several pieces that weren't in the lookbook, accessories, bags, home goods, childrens apparel. I was slightly disappointed by the collection in person as many of the pieces weren't quite as nice as it appeared in the lookbook, particularly with some of the finishing details. While the colors and patterns are really pretty in person, some of the fabric just didn't feel that nice, the cotton was rough on some of the pieces, like the maxi skirt, and the 100% silk pieces were too flimsy, wrinkly and see through. I did pick up a couple of comfortable pieces in 100% cotton, including the pink and white tie-dye striped maxi dress ($39.99, size 2), which is lined and probably my favorite piece, the off the shoulder blue ruffle embroidered dress which is also lined ($39.99, XS), the 3/4 length sleeve turquoise fan print dress ($36.99, XS), and the turquoise fan print in a romper ($14.99), which is actually a girls size 14-16. Even though its the most mainline Calypso-like silhouette and pattern, I'll probably be returning the blue fan print dress as it is too sheer to wear as a dress around town; it's more appropriate as swimsuit coverup and I don't need such a fancy swimsuit coverup, plus I don't want two pieces in the same pattern. I'll probably just use the romper as my coverup. I also purchased some of the melanine servingware for our summer bbqs. After shopping, N. and I had a really tasty breakfast at Green Peas on Sepulveda in Culver City. I had a delicious and inexpensive vegan breakfast burrito, I'll definitely be going back.
I'll be returning this one; it's more appropriate as swimwear coverup. Dress is a little too A-line as well; would have preferred it more slim fitting. Worn with Toms red striped wedges.
Worn with my own belt. I don't have anything in this style so I'll probably keep it. Unfortunately wrinkles easily as you can see.
Yes this is from the girls collection, but it fits and I've been wanting a romper for several seasons now
I have some Orla Kiely x Target melamine dinnerware that I use all summer long; these pieces will be a nice addition
I really liked this caftan in the lookbook but not in person. Silk is super thin and wrinkly, the rope is attached strangely and I feel like Princess Leia on vacation or a monk
Check out Otis' teeth!

Hiking with Friends

So cute, all the dogs in a row behind M (besides Floyd who enjoys leading)
I took Otis and Floyd hiking today with some friends and their two dogs up to the missile silo site up Mandeville Canyon.  Floyd managed to actually made his very first doggie friends, Kaia and Kash.  All it really took was his being off-leash.  Usually Floyd is a barking mess whenever we come within view of other dogs, but he was totally fine during the hike.  We encountered lots of dogs, from german shepherds to cocker spaniels and he didn't bark at all when he was off-leash.  Glad to see that he's not a total lost cause when it comes to other dogs.  It's so nice to be able to hike all year round in Los Angeles.  Now that we know that Floyd does better on hikes off-leash than on walks around our neighborhood, hopefully we'll go hiking more often.

Happy Halloween from Otis, Floyd and Toby

Such a handsome devil
Halloween has always been one of my favorite occasions and is pretty big in our neighborhood, so I seized on the opportunity to dress up the dogs and decorate the house a bit.  Since I've been traveling most of the last two weeks, we just put up a few decorations although most of our neighbors really went all out.

Cold War on a Hot Day

Yesterday was ridiculously hot in LA, setting all sorts of all-time record heat around town including 113 degrees in downtown LA.  Even Santa Monica reached 106, breaking an all-time record.  We turned on the AC last night for the first time all summer, not surprisingly.  It wasn't forecasted to be so warm earlier in the day, which is why S. and I went for a hike with the dogs in the morning, which in retrospect, was a little crazy.  When we left it was only 80 degrees, but by the time we got back to our car, it was 100 degrees.

We drove up Mandeville Canyon and hiked to the missile radar platform.  It's a very cool spot with awesome views, it's near the top of the Santa Monica mountains and you have a 360 degree view of Los Angeles; you can see the Valley, the eastside, Downtown LA, all the way to the beach.  It's probably about a 2-3 mile hike roundtrip and a little steep in spots.  We brought a lots of water for us and the dogs and made many stops in the shade, but it was quite hot!  We had a nice time though, and the dogs did too; they love being off-leash and I enjoy watching them explore.  We couldn't do much afterward but lounge around and watch lots of cooking shows on tv.
