Yosemite (getaway) Trip

I'm way overdue for a new post and although I really need to backtrack and make up for lost time, I'll do that later. I wanted to share our recent trip before I let that slip too! Last weekend, Ethan and I had the delightful privilege of going to Yosemite National Park together- JUST THE TWO OF US! It was amazing. My wonderful mother-in-law watched the kids despite the fact that they all got sick one after the other with a bad 24 hr fever bug. I felt really bad leaving them for her like that but they couldn't have been in better hands:) And the feeling of not having normal responsibilities and taking care of 3 little people 24/7 was, I won't lie, pretty darn awesome. I missed my kids a ton of course, but you know:)

Anyway, we left on Thursday morning and came back Sunday evening. It was a short trip but packed with lots of fun! Yosemite is one of my favorite camping places and I have very fond memories of going there summer after summer as a kid. Ethan and I stayed in Curry Village in one of the many white canvas tent cabins. They were mostly just a place to sleep- not much of a place to hang out in even out front as the tents were all packed in rows with people always walking by. They had no fire rings and you weren't allowed to cook anything. So it wasn't your typical camping experience but I didn't mind going out to eat at the various food places and restaurants there. Plus, no cooking or cleanup? Now that's a vacation! I did miss the campfires though. These tent cabins were just right for our needs but when we bring our whole family next time, we'll reserve a normal campsite.

If you go to Yosemite, definitely bring bikes! They have great paved, flat biking trails all throughout the park. It's my favorite way of getting around there since it's pretty big. There's nothing like biking past vast meadows with deer and going through groves of sequoia trees while breathing in amazingly clean fresh air! Friday morning after breakfast we drove up out of the valley over an hour to Glacier Point to overlook the valley and did 2 short but beautiful hikes up to the top of Sentinel Dome and Taft Point. Ethan wanted to hike Half Dome really badly but learned before the trip that you have to have a permit to hike the last crazy part up cables and they were sold out. It's a new policy for crowd control I think. I was kind of relieved but he was able to track one down last minute and hoped there would be time to sneak that hike in himself by getting up really early and trying to get back before noon while I hang out at camp. Normally Half Dome is a "most of the day" venture but with Ethan being in tip top shape, he thought he could do it in 5-6 hrs. I was willing to let him go but was very happy when he chose to stay with me:) He's a good man. I was also concerned as was he about hiking alone and especially early in the morning when few people are on the trail. He was sad about not hiking it but after our two little hikes on Glacier Point, he felt the same satisfaction of being on top of the world and getting that adrenaline rush of looking over an edge that plunged down to the valley floor a million miles down (or so it seemed). On a side note, Ethan has hiked Half Dome before 2 years ago and I did when I was a senior in high school. It was the hardest hike I've ever done and although the end result is amazing, I was relieved to not have to do it again after so many years and not being in the same shape I was as a teenager. He on the other hand, could do it every year since he's the real hiker in the family.

Friday afternoon when we got back, we rented a raft to float down the Merced river that runs all throughout the valley. Luckily they had just opened up the river for rafting/swimming the day we arrived! It had been closed all year because the river was too high for safety reasons. Then that evening we hung out at the lounge to charge our phones and have a place to hang out in since we had no campfire to enjoy.

Saturday we took another car trip to Upper Yosemite to Tuolumne Meadows. I'm sad that I didn't get any pictures here but we walked along the river through gorgeous meadows, had a picnic and did a little fishing. I caught one and got a huge bite that took my line and hook away but Ethan didn't get anything. It was still fun though. After heading back down to the valley we hiked up Vernal Falls. All the falls were so full from the snow pack so the mist trail going up to these falls was pretty nuts. I had never been so soaked before on this hike that I've done probably 4-5 times. It was refreshing and beautiful still!

Sunday we had to check out late morning and make the long 7.5 hr drive home. It was sad to leave and we thoroughly enjoyed spending that time together. I was also anxious to get home too so I could take over caring for my sick kids or at that point just sick Audrey. Yosemite is a great vacation spot that I'd highly recommend to anyone but be prepared for big crowds in the summer and you have to make reservations like 5 months in advance if you're lucky. Here are the pictures we took:

Just coming into Yosemite Valley (classic photo spot)

At the bottom of Lower Yosemite Falls

Top of Glacier Point with view of Half Dome in back:)
At the top of Sentinel Dome and on top of the world!
Taking a little rest on Half Dome- heehee:)

Sorry the audio isn't great- it was windy

The trees were ginormous

Sentinel Dome from a different view of the valley

Ethan at Taft Point- a crazy drop off on 3 sides down to the valley

This video doesn't do the huge drop down any justice. It gave us vertigo just to look over!
Rafting down the Merced River and loving every minute!

A sneak peak inside our little tent cabin- quite luxurious
Hiking Vernal Falls and just coming out of the mist trail- hence the drippy look:)
Taking our last pics on our way out. Sad to leave:( Seriously, our backdrop is a postcard!

Until next time:)

Family Pics

I have never been good about getting regular family pictures taken although deep down it haunts me. Ask me when I've taking Wesley to get photographed professionally? Um, haven't yet. Isn't that horrible! Well, thanks to my good friend and skilled photographer Sara Doud, we got some great shots of our family for our Christmas card taken at Old Poway Park. It was quick, easy, painless and very much needed! We even got a couple winners out of it! Thanks Sara!

And the two winners are:
(Don't worry, the train wasn't running at the time) I love these kids!

Christmas 2010

Here's the Christmas recap. I can't remember all that we did, but we had a nice time leading up to Christmas before Mr. Flu arrived. We were all hit(except Ethan) with a nasty respiratory flu that had us down from Christmas Eve through the following week. Though feverish and hacking up lungs, we all enjoyed the holiday season and getting new things. But more importantly, we enjoyed being with family and reflecting on the birth of our Savior and the blessings he's given and continues to bless us with.

Here is our annual trip to Santa's house (Huish residence in Poway) where the kids got a picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a free toy and a fun tour around their super festive house filled with lights, toys, blow up figures, fake snow, hot cocoa, cookies and music. And did I mention it's FREE! Check it out next year but get there early!

Here's one of our future pianists!

Caden at his preschool Christmas party

Christmas morning fun!

The aftermath.

Audrey's new best friend Maddie (as in Madame Alexander Girlz) in matching pj's thanks to Grandma and her sewing skills! (The robes were from the store) She's a beautiful doll- prettier than American Girl in my opinion. Costco had them for $25 (steal) but this doll came from Santa's bag;)

A much overdue recap!

This will be the first of a few posts I have been putting off. I have way too much to catch up on from last year and have been feeling overwhelmed thinking about this post! Here, I will mainly just be posting pictures from last Fall, add some captions and try to get up to date without losing too much sleep. To start out, here are the older kids on their picture day at school looking cute and smiley- even if some teeth are missing!
Halloween 2010! I signed up for Give a Day, Get a Day at Disneyland through Project Linus making fleece tie blankets. Ethan, Audrey and I made them, turned them into one of the local schools and in return got 3 free tickets to Disneyland. Pretty great deal! We took the family minus Wesley (thanks Mom) after Ethan's busy season. We met up with Leah and Toby's family and had a wonderful time! Caden hadn't been since he was a baby and loved it. I hardly took any pictures, sadly, but here is a classic:
Here we have our cute LGM Caden with his best bud Ben at preschool for the Halloween party.
Audrey was Little Red Riding Hood and Wesley is our darling froggy. Ethan is a Mexican wrestler? Scary huh.

Don't you just want to squeeze him? Love this kid. See him in action below with his army crawl!

And this one is so stinkin cute I just had to post it. Here's Wesley at 10 months. I love this face!
During Thanksgiving week, we rented a cabin near Cuyamaca Lake for a night with our family. It was a very cozy, comfortable 2 bedroom cabin that I found on Craigslist and it had everything we needed. The weather was especially freezing, windy and rainy. We spent most of the time inside staying warm, watching movies, coloring and enjoying the view. We also took a couple trips into Julian for fun. We hope to stay here again sometime.

We had a nice view of the lake through the trees.
Enjoying a cup of hot chocolate with my Snuggie. Total cheese I know!

Wesley is giving Caden lots of loves here. He loved every minute even though his head was totally slobbered after wards:) Audrey was the cameraman- sorry it's a bit bouncy!

It's great to be EIGHT!

I bet lots of people use this title for an 8th birthday post and yes, I must conform. Audrey turned 8 yrs old February 20th. She had a friend party at our house (plan B since plan A was at the park and it rained that day). She invited several friends and had a party consisting of pizza, crafts, cake and presents. What else do a bunch of 7-8 year olds need?

Special birthday breakfast- pink pancakes and bacon
This was a fun hit. It's a whole cake mix in a cupcake!
Ready for the party!
I regret not taking more pictures of her party. Here she is opening a few presents we got for her. The number fairy even came the night before! We're carrying on a tradition Ethan grew up with. When it's your birthday the number fairy (she knows it's us) cuts out and decorates several 8's or whatever number you're turning and tapes them all over the house. They love waking up on their birthday and finding all the numbers in the house! I can't believe my baby girl is 8 years old! She is such a special girl full of creativity using her hands whether it be crafts or playing the piano (still self taught). You give that girl some markers, paper, scissors, glue or tape and she can come up with amazing creations and some teeny tiny. She loves miniatures. She is amazing on the piano -playing by ear since she was 3 and has been too stubborn to take lessons until this summer with her Grandma Fisher! We hope she sticks with it. She seems a bit bored with it only after 4 or 5 lessons! She'd rather just play her own pieces in her head:)

Audrey's baptism was on March 5th. She was excited and a little nervous but the evening went smoothly and she felt very special. We're so proud of our Audrey for choosing to become an official member of the church. What a happy day!
Nice face Caden!

Proud daddy
