|
|
How does FAC's ratings and advisories system work?
FAC's ratings and advisory system is in place to help warn users of potentially offensive content in artwork. All categories and artist galleris have filtering options allowing members and visitors to exclude types of material which they do not wish to encounter while browsing. But in order for this system to work properly, it is critical that you understand how this system works, and use it to give accurate information about your picture. Failure to assign appropriate advisories to your submission can be grounds for moderation or removal of that picture from FAC by site staff.
What should I assign to my picture when submitting it?
Please read our (semi)-Official Ratings Guidelines for instructions on how the system works, and which labels to apply to a given submission.
What happens if I didn't choose the right rating for my picture? Can I go back and fix it?
If, for some reason, you submitted a picture without giving it an appropriate rating, the picture will either be rejected by FAC's Approval Panel, or you may receive a warning (in comment or e-mail form) about the picture's rating from either FAC site staff or the general FAC community. If this happens, locate the picture in your FAC gallery page, click the "edit" link next to the picture, and update/fix your picture's rating. Do so quickly, otherwise the picture may end up deleted by FAC site staff for not complying with the ratings system.
I'm not quite sure about my picture's content. Can I be conservative, and give it a harsher advisory just to play safe?
Yes ... to a point, that is. It's not always easy to define, for example, at what point "mild" nudity becomes "moderate" or "high", especially if it appears in conjunction with other advisories, so you may choose a higher advisory than normal if you are unsure. But don't just goof off, either -- meaning, do not issue an advisory at all unless you need to do so. For example, if there is no profanity or rough language in the picture, don't issue a Language advisory for the submission (not even a 'Mild' advisory). Our content advisory system is in place for a purpose, and knowingly over-rating a picture can be just as much an abuse of this system as is not rating it strong enough to begin with. Violations may be subject to moderation and/or removal with or without prior warning.

I doubt it. Those appear to be just little things; when Strata mentioned blood, I think he was more thinking in areas of gore and blood all over the place type thing. For a bleeding lip or something, I'd probably give it PG-13 to be on the safe side; it's not as if a kid hasn't had a bloody nose before. *shrug* _________________

That means that FAC staff did not believe you assigned the correct content advisories to your pic. Go re-read the first post in this topic, then try again. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I have a question about the 'Racism' rating. Does this also apply to racist acts/violence concerning non-human subjects (such as Anthros, for instance), or does it solely pertain to human racism?
I asked a friend about this, but she didn't know either... so I am asking here, for I do not want to under-rate my upcoming story, which contains quite a lot of Human/Anthro racial conflict (I'm fairly sure it warrants an advisory, but I need to ask FAC's staff anyway, just to be safe...)
If anyone knows anything about this, please tell me. Thanks in advance. _________________ "The thing you fear most has no power. Your fear of it is what has the power. Facing the truth will set you free"

The 'Racism' advisory is intended for themes of real-world racism. We have not evaluated whether or not it should also apply to fictional (e.g. "interspecies") racism.
As far as my own opinion on this subject... Fictional racism may be used as a symbol or metaphor for real-life racism. Because it's merely a symbol, it's not on the same level as potential offense to the viewer as the real thing. You probably will not need an advisory unless it directly echoes or resembles a real-life type of racism, and even then, perhaps nothing more than a mild advisory.
After all, if you are going to include differing species in the same story, then unlike different colors of humans, differing species have fundamental, core differences between each other. Would you call it racist for a flock of sheep to shun and despise a pack of wolves? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I had a similar opinion... and the more I think of it, there really isn't any racism between human ethnic groups in said story; it's mainly just the human/anthro disputes. *shrug* I thought there was more, but I reviewed it and didn't find anything between the humans. I mean, events such as war and whatnot are basically just political decisions, not actual racist acts (unless specified by the occasional hidden motive).
I just assumed since the human/anthro conflict is more of a battle for genetic superiority than anything else, I may need to issue an advisory, but I wasn't sure.... after all, I usually do not have a normal person's view of what should and should not receive a high rating, so for me it's always safer to ask. ^^;
I thank you for your time and advice, Strata. *bows* I shall be going now. _________________ "The thing you fear most has no power. Your fear of it is what has the power. Facing the truth will set you free"

As far as profanity goes, should a raised middle finger be rated for mild, moderate or not at all? |

Lord of the Rings and Star Wars had a lot of violence, yes -- but you didn't have internal organs falling out and blood spraying all over the place like in, say, Kill Bill. It's because it didn't cross that threshold of gore that they received a PG13 rating and not an R. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Ok, I know I'm new so I don't exactly know the ropes. But I submitted a small picture of a girl's head, with a banadana on, and it got rejected as a "sprite" when I thought it was just a head, and seeing as I drew it... but yeah, if you could, give me a hand? |

In FAC submission context, a "sprite" is a small pixelated character graphic used in a videogame. Because such sprites are copyrighted material, they cannot be used in an FAC submission.
Can you link the image you tried to submit? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I kinda got a rude surprise today when I followed an emailed link to a Favorite Artist whose pic was a lot more sexually racy than I bargained for. Definitely not work-safe. There used to be a customizable filter that would screen that stuff out. But I can't find it now. Does one still exist that can be active whenever I log in, or is it gallery-specific? |
