june-ing ...

Without a doubt, June flew faster than a freight train - the first two weeks in particular were like being shot out of a canon as we tried to balance a calendar filled with end-of-school commitments, little ladybug's birthday, the first time big ladybug had ever endured final exams (yikes!), plus all the parties and celebrations that go with all of the above ... it was day-in day-out madness!

big ladybug got a mouth full of hardware on the last day of May - still so beautiful to me, my brace-face beauty :)

*****
These next four pics deserve a post of their own - old time readers may remember this same event when my big ladybug did it two years ago ... the annual 5th grade regatta ... the kids each get to launch their own built-from-scratch sailboats at a local pond.  This regatta is a very special rite of passage for the class, as this is their last year in elementary school - it's on to middle school next Fall, I can hardly believe it!

my lens was too long to capture the whole class as they posed with their amazing teachers - what a wonderful group!

*****
Little ladybug is jumping for joy over turning eleven years old ... my heart breaks just a little bit more with every birthday ... she hosted a sleepover for her three best friends - they ate fondue and cake, got manicures, and giggled until midnight ... the perfect way to celebrate eleven magical years!

woot!

e.l.e.v.e.n!!

love this little group of bff's so much - they're the best!

Meantime, in big ladybug's busy 7th grade schedule, there were final exam days interspersed with party days ~ high highs and low lows all at once ~ it was a tough stretch, though it doesn't show in these happy photos ...

before heading out to the 4th and final bat mitzvah of the year
the luckiest boy in 7th grade - hanging out in the m&m photo booth with 4 giggly girls ;)
on the last day of exams, our school held a 'semi-formal' dance for the 7th and 8th graders after all that hard work

The three beauties above are good friends, fellow carpoolers, 8 years as classmates, and neighbors to boot.  The girl in the center is the same girl whose bat mitzvah it had just been days earlier (seen in gold in the 'm&m' photo) - it will be a tough blow for my ladybug when she moves away to Florida later this summer.  My sweet teenager has had a tough go this year, not a large pool of friends to choose from at her small school and within that pool I'm sorry to say there's a pair of 'mean girls' pulling strings and holding court.  Sure makes for a roller coaster of a ride when you're thirteen.  Though we wish her the best in her new life in Florida, it's a real shame to see one of the good ones go :(

School let out for summer vacation just a couple of days after that last photo - Friday June 15th - and we had a great week after that just chilling and hanging low ...

Hollywood has invaded our small town - seriously!  Adam Sandler and a lot of his movie buddies are living here and shooting a movie ("Grown Ups 2") all summer.  David Spade, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Samla Hayek, Maya Rudolph, and a couple of Disney Channel kids (China-Anne McClain and Cameron Boyce) are all here and have been seen regularly around town - both on and off the set.  If you look very very closely at the center of this next photo, you'll see Shaquille O'Neal dressed as a police officer.  Sights like this are now the norm in our sleepy town - sure makes the days interesting ...

*****
Outside of the whole movie thing, life is plugging along in typical summertime fashion here on the New England shoreline - it's all about the water around here ... the pool is open, the racing season has begun, and junior sail camps are running full steam ...

high dive!!

off to sail camp!

just another lazy sunday for my big ladybug ...
grainy but gorgeous - note to self, dslr sunset session is in order!

dead center in this pic, out in front, is sail number 1217 ... our manbug, of course!
and at the end of every wonderful summer day this sweet face is waiting for us ... our dear isabel, the cutest dog that ever lived :)

So that wraps up June ... 275 photos in a single month - a full one for sure.
And speaking of photos ...

i've finally joined instagram
 - it's been a slow start,
but it's growing on me -
if you're there,
i hope you'll look for me at

may-ing

thirty-one days of May have come and gone in a blinding speed - good thing I had my camera because the split second snap of the shutter was just about all I had time for ...

too bad my camera settings weren't adjusted for indoors, but here are
mommy's favorite ladybugs before the Spring May Day concert at school on May 4th

while at the aforementioned May Day concert - can you hear the screeching of those saxophones?  I sure did ...

my little cake boss used about 10 different frosting tips to create a bouquet of frosting flowers and the perfect mother's day cake!

little ladybug now has her own garden - lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, basil, parsley, mint, chives, oregano, you name it ... and best of all, she planted it with my mother while she visited that weekend :)

holy smokes, I can barely look at this photo without the tears welling up ...

full length shot of my big ladybug
heading out to her first black-tie gala
(the bat mitzvah party of a classmate - the third of the four)
what fun to be thirteen!

these 3 have been friends since first grade - hard to believe the transformation

the black-tie aspect gave it a very 'prom-like' feeling as all these great classmates gathered at school before the bus took them into Boston ...

lots of great swag was tossed to the kids on the dance floor later that night ...

gathering at the start of the Memorial Day parade ... love this shot

april-ing

No time for deep thoughts ... no more than a second to say hello on this Monday morning ... but as I sit here trying to organize our May photo folder (bursting with 125+ photos already!) and put it to words for a post, I saw that late March into April was about to get overlooked and forgotten unless I took some sort of action ...

late March brought lots of daffodils this year ...

spring flowers make a very willing subject when testing a new lens

Isabel and little ladybug won the "owner/doggie lookalike" category in their matching Girl Scout uniforms

a springtime theme in little ladybug's window ...

the colors of Easter ...

these guys taste best when left out for a bit ...

even the puppy got an Easter basket ...

learning early that all good girl-time incorporates chocolate ...

bat mitzvah buddies ...

fast forward 5 hours: photos from the dance floor ... big ladybug giving a high arm and a woot woot!

one last group shot before the night ended ... big ladybug looking like where's waldo in the back ...

balancing act ...

in case you haven't noticed lately ...
my blogging momentum,
my photo-taking mojo,
my writing groove ...
all of it ...
it's just not there.

definitely haven't been in blogland in any meaningful way
for quite a while now.

too many other demands each day,
too many balls in the air.
and since returning from march break,
this little extracurricular of mine seems to have become
a last priority.

it started out as simple brooding,
which seems to happen every year after my return.

as the post-vacation high wears off,
my energy plummets.
my heart laments the fact that it'll be another year
until i'm there with them again.

i stew over the 1,573 miles that separate us.
and i sulk over the injustice that my girls
are growing up so far away from their o.n.l.y. grandmother.
i miss my mom.
terribly.
and my brother.
and his awesome wife.
and their beautiful 2 year old daughter.
who is growing up so quickly.

but the ladybugs and i have been back for five weeks already.
the late-march brooding has long subsided.
and april has brought life back into full swing.

we've had april fools day, easter,
girl scouts, school, piano lessons,
ear infections, playdates, movies, sleepovers,
manbug's birthday,
a gorgeous early spring, taxes,
ice cream trucks, bike rides, and
even entered isabel in a doggie fashion show at the ymca!

yep, every ball that makes up my life is back in the air.

image from here

well ... all except one.
the blog ball is the only one still lying on the ground.

what began as post-vacation brooding
and simple time off from posting,
turned into weeks of silence.
why haven't i rushed back to blogland with arms outstretched?

it's balance, plain and simple ...
(yes, again)
every year when the frenzy of our winter schedule
crashes head-on into the bliss of our march vacation,
i'm always reminded of the importance of balance.

the balance of my time
the balance of my energy
the balance of my girls' privacy
the balance of actually being present in my own life
the list goes on ...

am i stopping altogether?
no.
not yet anyway.
i'd miss my blog friendships too much!

but i am definitely going to slow down.
and condense the time i spend here.
probably by quite a bit.

so i can find the right balance
between living my life as the mother of two lovely little ladybugs
and yet still finding the time to journal our ladybug tales.
