A Cool Book

I picked up this book today.

It's great to just leaf through. I hadn't known until today that Ohio Stadium at The Ohio State University was designed by the same architect, Howard Dwight Smith, who designed the high school from which my wife and I graduated, West High School, also in Columbus.

The north end of the stadium is similar to the beautiful ceiling of the auditorium at West, which also depicts important events in history.

Hey, Bearcat Fans, Here's Proof That We in Buckeye Nation Feel Your Pain

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats lost in their bowl game with the Florida Gators a few days back. The same thing happened to my beloved Ohio State Buckeyes in a game for the national championship a few years back. Here's a little sympathy and inspiration for Bearcat fans; maybe you can learn from how we coped with our loss to the Gators back in 2007.

I titled the post in which I originally linked to this video three years ago, Like Saddam's Statue Being Brought Down in Baghdad.

Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl: I'm Apprehensive, Confident

I'd be fibbing if I claimed to not be apprehensive about my Ohio State Buckeyes' date with the Oregon Ducks in tomorrow's Rose Bowl. I am apprehensive. But I am also confident.

I've gotten to see the Ducks several times this year. They have a formidable offense and an excellent quarterback. If Ohio State's defense doesn't play as well as they are capable of playing--and they are capable of playing extremely well, there is no way I see OSU's offense can keep up with that of Oregon. But, I think that low-scoring game delivered by the Ohio Sate D-line, favors the Buckeyes.

The last time I saw Oregon play, against archrival Oregon State, I wasn't impressed with the Ducks. Raised on Big Ten football, which puts a premium on great, body-pounding defense, I can't say that I'm ever dazzled by games with results like 44-41 or 37-33, the scores of the Ducks' last two wins.

None of this is to say that I think the Pac 10 is soft; accusations of that sort are pure malarkey. I am saying that the Buckeyes definitely can win this game--and should win this game if the defense comes to play, as they have all season long.

Of course, the 8000-pound gorilla for the Buckeyes is the accusation that Ohio State doesn't win the big ones. That isn't true, of course. They've had to win some big ones to play in BCS games as routinely as they have under Coach Jim Tressel. But because of several nationally-televised losses against big-time opponents, including the two most recent of them by cat-whisker scores, the myth has developed.

That myth will, at the least, be in the backs of every OSU player's mind tomorrow, and the pressure to win will the be a second opponent against which the Buckeyes will line up.

That said, I think the Buckeyes will win tomorrow.

In any case, Jim Tressel is still the best college football coach in the country and...

Five Key Factors in Ohio State-Purdue Game on Saturday

Here. Go, Buckeyes!

[UPDATE: Sports radio callers are after Jim Tressel's scalp. One guy I heard after the Buckeyes' loss to Purdue said that "the game has passed...[Tressel] by."

My take is different. First, the offensive line, which almost everyone who follows Buckeye football knew coming into the year was a big question mark, seems fairly limited either in creating a safe passing pocket for Terrelle Pryor or blowing open holes for the running game.

Second, I think that Pryor has been wrestling with confidence issues all season long. The tentativeness with which he played during the USC game earlier this year seems to have carried forward to the subsequent five games.

Much preseason chatter said that the success or failure of the Buckeyes '09 campaign depended on Pryor performing, not just well, but as a superstar. It overlooked the important fact that Pryor, a sophomore who was the starter for half a season last year, is this year surrounded by almost entirely new personnel at the skill positions. In addition, I wonder how confident any of us would be if our passing pocket was collapsing all the time.

Jim Tressel is a five-time national champion (four times at Division 2 Youngstown State and once at OSU) who admittedly creates conservative game plans for his offenses. But I personally believe that under his leadership, the Buckeyes have, in some ways, overachieved this season.

Today, the defense had an uncharacteristically bad day, allowing Purdue to get away with little dump passes under coverage which, I think, set up the Boilermakers' running game. A squad that has been carrying the weight for the Buckeyes so far this season could be expected to eventually have an off-day. The D just couldn't compensate for the deficiencies in offensive execution, as it had in five of the first six games, today.

But, in his heart of hearts, Coach Tressel must be hoping that his incoming freshman offensive line will step up next year in a big way.

In the meantime, I know that Tressel, who I think is the best college coach in the country, will continue to challenge the Buckeyes to learn from this loss and keep getting better.

If the offensive line can be shored up in some way, maybe Pryor can relax, have fun, and play the way everybody knows he can.

Of course, my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not a football coach, but a preacher!]

Yes, Buckeyes!

From espn.com, regarding Ohio State's appearance as the eighth-ranked college football team this week:
8. Ohio State: 755th week Buckeyes have been ranked in the AP poll, breaking tie with Michigan (754 and not ranked) for most appearances all-time.
Even though the Buckeyes dropped from sixth after their win over Navy, that's still impressive. Ohio State has a huge challenge next week when USC comes to Columbus.

I'm happy because...

...the Ohio State Buckeyes won their season opener today against the Naval Academy, 31-27. Granted, it was a somewhat lackluster performance on OSU's part. But I'm less concerned after this year's first game than over last season's opener. Then, the Buckeyes were nearly upset by the Akron Zips. The Midshipmen this year are clearly a better team than the Zips were last season. Also, the Middies feature an offense scheme which the Buckeyes won't face for the balance of the system.

There are legitimate concerns about the OSU offensive line, partuclarly as we look ahead to next week's faceoff against USC. But I feel more confident about Ohio State's 2009 encounter with the Trojans in Columbus than I did leading up to the Buckeye-Trojan matchup in LA last year.

Go, Buckeyes!

...also the Reds, who have been decimated by injuries throughout this season are doing some winning lately. I have to believe that had the Reds suffered fewer personnel losses over extended periods of time in 2009, they would be more in the thick of things for a post-season run. Hope does spiring eternal in the spring...and in old fans grasping at straws in the fall.

Go, Reds!

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!

For me, Ohio State men's basketball is an even bigger deal than Ohio State football, which may come as a surprise for regular readers here who now how much I like the football Buckeyes.

But watching this year's men's team has proven to be an adventure every game. A team with a lot of great players, particularly Evan Turner, P.J. Hill, and John Diebler, Ohio State never figured out how to play with the kind of consistency needed to pass the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes lost to the Siena Saints in double overtime on Friday night.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhh!

But congratulations to the Big Ten and the Ohio teams that have so far advanced in the torunament...including even (you didn't read that I said this), Michigan.

Identity Crisis

Columbus Dispatch sports columnist Rob Oller has it right, I think. Whatever their identity, I hope that the OSU men's basketball team has a good run in the Big Ten tournament.

Yes!

Who owns the longest current winning streak in Division 1 men's college basketball, including two marquee victories: Miami and Notre Dame?

Guess.

These guys, that's who!

Go, Buckeyes!

[UPDATE: Major bummer! Get well, David.]

Saturday, December 06, 2008

Yeah!

For the second time this week, the unranked and rebuilding Ohio State men's basketball club faced a ranked team away from Columbus. And for the second time this week, the Buckeyes won, beating Notre Dame 67-62 today. I am psyched!

Go, Buckeyes!

WOW!

I've been out of state for several days and more or less, insulated from the world. Yeah, I heard that someone named Clinton will be nominated by President Obama for Secretary of State. And, yes, I heard that the Big Three automakers have presented new business plans, along with a request for loans totaling $34-billion for the lot of them. And, yeah, I know that recession has been officially declared as the condition of the economy since last November.

But having gotten home just a few moments ago, THIS was the item about which I hadn't heard and which, in the past half hour, has ROCKED MY WORLD.

Now, it's back to work.

"Big Ten Bowl Predictions"

Dotting the I projects which Big Ten teams will be in what bowl games and how they'll fare here. Sound reasoning, but I'm not sure that Wisconsin can beat Ball State, a very talented MAC team.

Go, Buckeyes! Beat Michigan!

You don't have to be an Ohio State or Michigan fan to know that the rivalry between these two schools is huge. In Columbus, coaches with otherwise fantastic records have lost their jobs for failing to beat Michigan. Even in a year that has seen Michigan amass only three wins before the big game, it's an important game...and not just because Ohio State needs a win to ensure at least a share of the Big Ten title.

The nature of this rivalry and the passions of the two schools are such that future renditions of the Ohio State-Michigan game will, as has so often been true in the past, have national championship implications. But even without those this year, both teams will try to show up with their A-games tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it.

Go, Buckeyes!
