5 QUESTIONS WITH JOSE L. CARBALLO

Masstropicas is back with the five questions series. Our first segment brings you a thoughtful read(in Spanish) with Jose L. Carballo a man who is a living legend. In the mid 70s Jose produced and played on many studio recordings and then would go onto to form LA NUEVA CREMA with the pharaoh of chicha chacalón.

He would later form the great LA MERMELADA with various vocal contributions from different vocalists.

Jose also has 3 songs appearing on the next Masstropicas compilation EL SONIDO DE TUPAC AMARU.

What was the first instrument you learned to play and were there any guitar players that had a great influence on the way you approached the guitar?

Jose: MY FIRST INSTRUMENTE WAS THE GUITAR SOY UNA MESCOLANZA DE ESTILOS (HYBRID),PORQUE FUI INFLUENCIADO POR LOS GUITARRISTAS UNDERGROUND DE ESA ESPOCA 60`S ERIC CLAPTON(THE CREAM) TONY IOMMI (BLACK SABBATH)JIMMY PAGE(LED ZEPPELIN) Y DESPUES POR LOS COMPADRES(CUBA)GUARACHEROS DEL ORIENTE(CUBA),TRIO SERVANDO DIAZ(CUBA)Y CLASICOS COMO TARREGA.

What production that you were involved in are you most proud of?

Jose: ESTOY MAS ORGULLOSO EN LA PRODUCCIONES QUE HICE CON CHACALON,PORQUE HIZE CREACION DE UN ESTILO MUSICAL,QUE PERDURA HASTA HOY Y SIGUE DIFUNDIENDOSE CON MUCHOS IMITADORES DE MI FORMA DE TOCAR LA GUITARRA.

For you what is the difference between CHICHA and cumbia Peruana?

Jose: Para mi la diferencia entre cumbia peruana y chicha es solamente el acomplejamiento del peruano,frente al mundo, para con sus verdaderas raices. La de no aceptar su verdadera cultura y arte musical,al no poder hacerlo saca a relucir su racismo y menosprecio,anteponiendo la palabra "chicha" como menospreciativa,de esta manera creando un divisionismo y apartamiento de la gente andina,selvatica y tambien costeña,y enfrentandola con los capitalinos(Lima). Musicalmente es muy complejo y extenso poder explicar esta diferencia,porque por ejemplo,yo naci en San Isidro ,el lugar mas "chic" de Lima e hice lo que bautizaron como "chicha",muchos exitos con Chacalon, 'hijos del sol","Chacal","Viko","La Mermelada",etc,como tambien soy creador de exitos de lo que conocen como cumbia peruana,con Carlos Ramirez, Claudio Moran, Julio Mao del Cuarteto Continental,Raul Serrano del "El combo palacio","Los Carinosos".etc Esto creo que es una disyuntiva ,porque a Jose L Carballo como lo llamarian o catalogarian ,los "conocedores" ? . Soy "Chichero" o "Cumbiambero"? A mi me da lo mismo que me llamen como quieran los "seudos conocedores",lo mas importante es que esas canciones tan exitosas que han salido de esta vertiente tropical peruana como"La Colegiala","Eres Mentirosa","Ven mi amor","Viento","Lagrimas de amor","Las Limeñas","El Arbolito","Traicionera","El Aguajal","Enfermera" y muchas mas,dan la vuelta al mundo ; y fuera del Peru a nadie le interesa como la llamen ,ellos solamente la bailan y apaluden si les gusta.

What is your favorite Black Sabbath album?

Jose: TO ME," PARANOID" ; no only is this the best Black Sabbath album, it is one of the best heavy metal albums ever. It includes the legendary singles "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" and is a defining moment in the history of heavy metal.

With some minor delays the compilation should be out by late April. It is currently at the pressing plant and we should be getting test presses very soon! We'll have a video with a song from the test pressing up when we get them in the coming week.

Tunchi has worked his magic once again and came up with a glorious cover for EL PATRON DE LA CUMBIA CARLOS RAMIREZ CENTENO!

This release titled "musica bonita para mi gente bonita" will come as a bonus with the EL SONIDO DE TUPAC AMARU compilation LP due out in March and like the compilation is limited to 500 copies. I will post a track list and more information about the compilation within the next few days.
