Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett says consumers must be offered a viable alternative to illegal downloads.

Virgin has pledged to temporarily cut off internet users who violate piracy laws as part of a subscription download deal with Universal music.

The firms announced the agreement one day ahead of the publication of Digital Britain, the government-commissioned report Digital Britain into the future of the UK's media technologies.
