During the police investigation Mr and Mrs Hamilton were critical of the law which allows alleged victims of sexual assaults to remain anonymous but not those accused.

Ms Milroy-Sloan later waived her right to anonymity and was interviewed by a Sunday newspaper.

Mr Hamilton said being ruled out as a suspect had not lessened his determination to seek a change in the law.

"I'm not just going to wash my hands of this case and go back to normal life, in so far as that phrase means anything for the Hamiltons."

Mr Hamilton said he would use contacts in parliament and the media to attempt to change the law.

Investigations concerning other allegations made by Ms Milroy-Sloan - not connected to the Hamiltons - are continuing.

The man accused of raping her has been bailed to return to Ilford police station on 10 October.

The Hamiltons are now suing Ms Milroy-Sloan for libel.

Last month a High Court judge ruled assets belonging to Ms Milroy-Sloan would remain frozen until the case had been resolved.

Mr and Mrs Hamilton said they were not bringing the action to make money but to uphold their reputation and deny Ms Milroy-Sloan the chance to make a profit.

If successful the proceeds would be passed to the Police Orphans Fund, the Hamiltons said.
