Let The Freak Show Begin ~Adrastos, First Draft ~I really didn't think that 4 term former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards (hereinafter EWE or just plain Edwin) would run for Congress. I even predicted a non-candidacy on social media. In the immortal words of Graham Parker "I thought I was right, I was wrong."
After EWE's announcement there was a lot of back and forth on NOLA twitter between the moralists who were outraged and horrified and those of us who view politics as entertainment with higher than average stakes. The moralists are concerned that EWE's candidacy will "hurt the state's image." Give me a fucking break, we have a creationism law, a Governor who performed an exorcism whilst in college and take a rapper with a silly name, Little Boosie, seriously.

New Orleans ~Moria Donegan, n+1
~When I pulled off of I-10 the day that I first arrived in town, a soldier in desert-colored fatigues stood beneath a blackened traffic light, directing cars with his stiff palms. On the road behind him felled oak branches lay downturned on the asphalt like hands. I had to steer around them. This was August 30, 2012, and my timing could have been better. Hurricane Isaac had made landfall two days earlier, the first major storm to hit New Orleans since Katrina. Power was out in much of the city, and further downriver, in swampy Plaquemines Parish, two bodies had been found floating face down in a flooded kitchen. Isaac was the first real test of the new, $4 billion levee system that the government had built after 2005, and a lot of people had expected the levees to fail. Almost all of the friends I knew in New Orleans had evacuated to Austin, Memphis, or Baton Rouge; they sent me pictures of the traffic backed up on the outbound side of the highway. “I really don’t know what’s going to happen,” one friend had told me a few days earlier, over the phone. “But I don’t want to be here when we find out.” Before the storm reached land the Army Corps of Engineers had been called in, “to provide assistance and keep order.” But the levees held, and while a lot of people lost power, the damage wasn’t nearly as bad as what had been feared. By the time I reached town there were soldiers standing in clusters at the major intersections along Claiborne Avenue, looking bored. The French Quarter even had its lights back on, and businesses were open in the tourist district. On Rampart Street as I made my way to my apartment, I saw an Army Humvee stop to let a gaggle of drag queens cross the street. I watched them disappear into a bar.

Judge upholds AG Buddy Caldwell's approval of levee authority's vote in wetlands damage suit ~Mark Schleifstein~Attorney General Buddy Caldwell acted appropriately in approving the east bank levee authority's vote to hire a law firm for a wetlands damage suit against 97 oil, gas and pipeline companies, a Baton Rouge judge ruled Monday. The judge also ruled that the Louisiana Oil & Gas Association's lawsuit attempting to overturn Caldwell's approval was frivolous.

~Editilla Conswellas~ Won't make it to'da Water Festival today, more for health reasons than lack of wanting to be there. I'll admit it, Ladderellos, Mardi Gras Kicked My Ass! It took a couple'a days to rise up but up it came like a viscous hurricane crup yesterday. But I hope all involved with this fine event know my anonymocity does not speak of ambivalence. I'm work in the undergrowth, beneath even the underground, beneath the grassroots. Some of you who've followed me a while know what I'm talkin'bout. Ever since the Federal Flood of New Orleans 8-29-05 I'm wary of crowds. I don't like people who hurt Louisiana. I don't play fair. I don't really like to be seen, much less identified. But hahaha thank God fo'da Internets eh?

Environmental groups pledge to fight changes in levee board appointments ~Jeff Adelson, New Orleans Advocate~The groups announced their opposition at the site of the London Avenue Canal floodwall breach in Gentilly. They said that had a more active and professional board been in place prior to Katrina, it could have argued against design decisions that led to that breach and other failures in the area’s U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-designed flood-protection system. The creation of an independent board filled largely with engineers and other experts was a critical element of the 2006 legislation that replaced the prior boards with the two new flood-protection authorities.
“It’s very simple. This is not about our safety. It’s about a different agenda,” Sandy Rosenthal of Levees.org said of the Adley bill.

Everybody is invited.
What is the GreenARMY? Five days after the floodwalls in New Orleans broke during Katrina US Army General Russell Honore and the Louisiana National Guard were allowed to enter the city, restore order, and start recovery operations. The General was able to get things done despite the inadequate national, state and local political leadership in place at the time, and despite the immensity of the disaster. We have another huge disaster that unfolds every day. That is the continuing destruction of our coastal environment and our water quality caused by unregulated and exploitative oil and gas extraction in Louisiana and its coastal waters. Retired General Honore has chosen to lead a broad coalition of environmental and community organizations in drawing attention to these issues and in forming a legislative agenda to tackle the problems. The GreenARMY event on March 8 is a chance for us to show support for the General and for holding big industry accountable for damage to our water and coastal resources. Please join us on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Louisiana State Capital.

~Morial, now president of the National Urban League, said the phone was designed to stay active even when power and regular phone service went down. Nagin’s on-the-stand joke, Morial said, “got under my skin because Katrina was nothing to play around with. The way he handled it — (President George W.) Bush and (Gov. Kathleen) Blanco, too — made New Orleans the laughingstock of the country.” Had Nagin picked up the phone instead of ridiculing it, Morial added, “he might have learned something.”

Levee-board reformers worry that Bobbly Jindal is bringing politics back into process ~Bob Marshall, The Lens~Last month, Jay Lapeyre, the leader of the nominating committee for the local flood authority, received a letter from Garret Graves, head of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s coastal office. It said two previous nominees from the committee were ineligible, and it asked that Lapeyre reconvene the panel and send more names up.
One of those rejected is the authority’s president and supporter of its controversial lawsuit against oil and gas companies the governor opposes.
The letter concluded: “It is important to note that we have no intention of circumventing the nominations committee’s role in this appointment.”
Lapeyre isn’t so sure. Asked whether the governor is now directing the process, he answered quickly: “Yes, definitely.”
