If I Won 52 Million Dollars in the Texas Lottery...

Today, for some reason, I was thinking about how my life might change if I won a chunk of change in the lottery. (That would be a stretch, since I might play once or twice a year.)
  • I would quit my day job and volunteer a bit more.
  • I would pay college loans for my children, and help them with more school to help them find careers they love.
  • I would purchase homes and vehicles (and pay the insurance) for my family.
  • I would give anonymously to people in need - especially single moms.
  • I would replace washing machines, air conditioners, and make car repairs for needy families in Jesus' name.
  • I would pay deductibles and medical expenses for the working poor.
  • I would treat children to new clothing and shoes for school.
  • I would sponsor new prom dresses and shoes and hair for needy teens.
  • I would sponsor mission trips and church camp for lots of people.
Would I keep this home?

Would I call one of my favorite thrift stores to come pick everything up and go out and buy new stuff?

Well...it might surprise you, but even if I won 52 million dollars...I would keep many of my thrift store treasures.

Most of them, in fact.

Of course, I might professionally upholster some of them...

Others might get a little professional help...with glue, clamps, and such.

I would definitely purchase new bed frames and mattress sets...extra cushy ones. New goose down pillows would be on the list, too...

But this chest of drawers would probably be donated...

I would keep this bench and table...

And I would keep this desk and chair, but maybe not together...

I would keep this old trunk as well as the things on top of it.

But the Ikea shelving would probably be relegated to storage in the garage or something.

I guess what I'm saying is that no matter the circumstances, I like this junk I have accumulated over the years.

I love the old books and quirky pieces. And I like it that not everything matches.

I'd keep the hutch, but it might be used somewhere else. The table and chairs would stay. Those chairs are due for a paint job...maybe before Christmas.

And I'd probably keep my house...and make some repairs and structural changes to it. I'd furnish it with cozy furniture and offer it to my church to use for visiting speakers and to my friends and family for whenever they passed through.

Where would I live? I would buy a different house in which to live...maybe even in a different city.

It would have bigger rooms, and more open layout for hosting Bible studies and small groups. It would have lots of windows and light.

I would buy a house for my parents nearby...and for any of my children who might want to live nearby as well.

Then I would enjoy shopping thrift stores, flea markets (maybe PARIS!!!) and taking road trips to parts unknown to find new quirky things for all of us. I would still paint things myself.

I would hire someone to sew for me, and to clean my house and do my yard work! Then, I could just weed a bit, prune or dead head, plant a bit...and let someone else mow and edge and prune trees.

Even with millions of dollars in the bank, I don't think I would ever stop searching for thrifty treasures...and I would probably still post about painting them!

Word for the Day:
Acts 20:35
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

French Chair Full of Antlers

One never knows what she might find at a garage sale...

Especially a Texas garage sale.

One might find a French chair...or deer antlers. Saturday, it was deer antlers.

I found them at Mary's garage sale. She lives two doors down...a single woman neighbor.

I think she probably collected them herself, after they were shed in wild places where she hunts for rocks.

She also had rocks for sale...but I didn't buy any. And I love rocks...some were inside a canvas bag for dimes from the Denver Mint. I wanted the bag, but it was not for sale.

I wonder why I've never invited her for coffee before...and maybe I should...

I should just knock on her door one day after work, and tell her I liked her rocks, and I regret not buying at least one...and maybe she might like to have coffee or something.

After all, if she enjoys hunting for rocks, and I enjoy hunting for good junk...we might have even more in common...right?

I thought the antlers looked beautiful piled on the French chair...a jumble of weathered warm gray tones. The chair cost $5 at a thrift store a while back. The frame and cushion were both painted in Annie Sloan French Linen.

The antlers are natural. :)

Word for the Day:
Psalm 42:1-2
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

Thrifty Life Thursday # 30 With Posts from Last Week's Party...

One look at these little pots de creme, and I snagged them.

Then I had second thoughts. I considered keeping them, but I don't need 4 little pots of chocolate mousse...though it sounds just yummy. Mousse is not part of the plan.

They are not marked, but they look very similar to Fitz and Floyd ones I found online. They'll go to Etsy.

This past week was another house-sitting gig for me. Three cute little canine friends who were all very well-behaved. No computer access, though. I really need to get a laptop, I think.

So...I was amused and amazed as usual at the wonderful posts you linked to the party last week! Here are the features:

Kim at Snug Harbor Bay shared a big batch of estate sale finds with us. My personal fave was a printer drawer...I think I need one. It would be great on the living room wall when I do my industrial thang...this fall...so I think I need to shop.

Check out her other finds...vintage kitchen stuff, some of it I remember from my childhood.

Another listing that made me start visually rearranging my living room was Penny's vintage library ladder. I NEED one. You probably do, too. Drop by Penny's Vintage Home to find out how little she paid for this beauty!

Penny, if you ever want to get rid of it, let me know...

Kris from Junk Chic Cottage shared a lovely headboard project her husband put together with her guidance and vision. They completely reworked an armoire, and used the doors to create this beauty.

I just want to plop down right here...it looks so cozy!

This week is one of those weeks when I had a really hard time choosing three, so you have four wonderful posts that charmed my sensibilities!

Jonni from Millie's Milestones shared a vintage bicycle project from her garden...

She is using it to publicize her blog! Clever AND charming.

      August Living Room Tour...

Easy summer switcharoo...a couple of hours max.
I know I had mentioned doing a summer living room, adding aqua to my neutral room...but I procrastinated.

Then, I did an aqua painting

And yesterday, when I was dusting and sweeping, I thought...why not? After all, it's just the little things...the things that are the most fun, anyway.

      Swap a gray saucer for a turquoise one...tweak a gallery wall...or two.

So I dug my boxes of aqua and green things out from under the bed in the middle bedroom and indulged myself with some decorating therapy.

I really like this French chair next to the industrial bookshelf...and the aqua is a nice change.

At first, I thought I might not have enough aqua accents...but it came together.

The shelves barely changed, except for the removal of deconstructed books and addition of aqua and light blue ones.

A few small vintage aqua vases and ceramics were mixed in here and there.

The trunk coffee table got new items as well...

A vintage tray and aqua glass bottles I have been collecting when I find them at thrift stores...

Along with vintage books. Now, you can sit on the sofa, and teach yourself a little French.

The mantel got tweaked as well...

The pretty glass marble below is one of my son Ethan's first glass pieces.

The metal lantern thing with the lovely patina was the front porch light when I first moved in. The wiring was shot, but I loved the look of it, so I kept it.

Pretty much everything you see is collected over years from thrift stores and garage sales.

Some of it has been painted white by yours truly.
The table in front of the window holds an old bird feeder and a small collection of turquoise antique glass insulators

I love the way they catch the light...

Next to the table is the small gallery wall, which was tweaked from its radiant violet incarnation. I painted a new small piece for a pop of aqua.

You haven't seen this lamp before...at least I don't think so. I saw it at a thrift store, and paid more than I usually like to pay...$5. (Without the shade.)

Now, I need a few cute pillows...like that's going to happen.
Even if I buy cute fabric, I procrastinate with sewing projects.

They really would finish it off, though...
And I'd need at least one more for here:

The white bench gallery wall got tweaked as well.

Before long, this piece will move to another room.
But for now, it stays, with aquatic tweaks.

There is ONE new piece in the room...

It was a couple of bucks on the 80 percent off aisle at Hobby Lobby.

That wraps up my August living room tour...and I'm glad I did it, even if it will change before October. Change is good for the spirit - refreshing.

Price for a refreshing aqua living room redo: about $4 for a spool of aqua ribbon and an 80 percent off box. Time invested: 2 hours.

      Word for the Day:
      Genesis 8:22
While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.
