‘5 wishes’ HIDDEN JOURNALLING, PAINT TECHNIQUES

HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED THE NANNY MCPHEE FILMS??
IF YOU HAVE YOU WILL KNOW THAT NOT ONLY ARE THEY GREAT FILMS, BUT THEY HAVE A GREAT MESSAGE. I WATCHED THE SECOND FILM LATELY AND IT INSPIRED THIS CLASS. MORE SPECIFICALLY, IT WAS THE QUOTE FROM THE FILM:
NANNY MCPHEE: THERE IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE WAY I WORK. WHEN YOU NEED ME BUT DO NOT WANT ME, THEN I MUST STAY. WHEN YOU WANT ME BUT NO LONGER NEED ME, THEN I HAVE TO GO. IT'S RATHER SAD, REALLY, BUT THERE IT IS.
WHEN NANNY MCPHEE LEAVES, SHE HAS LEFT HER LESSONS BEHIND. THE THINGS SHE TAUGHT MADE FOR BETTER LIVES. SO WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN/GRANDCHILDREN??? WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MOTHER.
THIS INTERACTIVE LAYOUT WILL GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAVE YOUR LEGACY.

PLEASE FEEL  FREE TO CHANGE THE DESIGN TO SUIT YOUR OWN STYLE AND TASTES; AFTER ALL, IT IS YOUR ALBUM YOUR LAYOUT WILL LIVE IN, NOT MINE! I LIKE TO DOODLE AND OUTLINE MY WORK, IT IS MY STYLE! J THIS IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS.
I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE CLASS AND THE FINISHED PROJECT. IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL  FREE TO CONTACT ME.

Cherry Tree layout tutorial

I started by spraying Sun Sisters Glimmer mist onto white cardstock.

I then cut out the Webster's Pages hexagons and birdgcages which I had resized and printed onto white cardstock and added them to the layout.

I layered a photo and paper and added them to the layout, adding further photos to the right of the cluster.

I started to build the banner underneath the photos using paper flags, dazzle me gems, sparklers etc.

I wanted to use the same colour yellow as the Glimmer Mist to 'ink' around the edge of the cardstock. I sprayed the Glimmer Mist onto kitchen roll and lightly 'inked' around the edge of the card. It worked!

I finished the banner, added a title and journalling.

Added a stamped phrase at the bottom and I was finished :)

How does your garden grow?
by Emma Trout

SUPPLIES
Patterned papers:
American Crafts- (Baby) Mary Quite Contrary, Hickory Dickory, Jack Be Nimble, Baby Bunting
(Teen) Sadie Hawkins, Teachers Pet
(Backyard) Sizzle, Snap
Doodlebug- flocked black
My Little Shoebox- My Neighbourhood
12x12 Canvas frame
Ranger Industries- pearl dabber
Stickles (Icicle)
Stamps- Art warehouse
Heidi Swapp- Felt butterflies
Prima crystal swirls
Stix2 PVA and foils
Other: Twigs, wooden coffee sticks, string pearls, straw, reindeer moss, seed beads, pom-pom trim Silver foil, shells, silver bells, magic mesh, Dymo tape, lace, craft wire, acrylic paint, white card.
HOW TO
Paint the inside edge of the frame with black acrylic paint and leave to dry.
Glue a piece of Jack Be Nimble paper across the top half of the inside frame.
Cut two hill shapes from the reverse Baby Bunting and Snap papers. Ink the edges, add lace to the back of each ‘hill’ then glue onto the layout across the centre.
Cut a piece of Sizzle paper to fit along the bottom of canvas and glue into position.
Cut three tree shapes from the reverse of Snap and Jack Be Nimble paper. Stamp one with dots stamp and emphasis some of the dots with a white pen. Glue into position at the top of the canvas. Add twigs to form the branches and trunks. I then made some roses made by cutting circles from the reverse Teachers pet, cutting into a spiral and then folding the spiral inwards to form the flower. This technique I learnt from my talented friend Lucy Folch. These were added to the trees.
I added clouds cut from Hickory Dickory and matted them onto silver foil. Cut houses from the My little Shoebox paper and place on top of the hill. Cut a path from white card and glue into position coming down the hills. Edge with string pearls.
Paint coffee sticks with white acrylic paint then pearl dabber when dry. Trim the length and fix together to form a fence. Glue into position across the left/middle page.
Cut a path that will go along the bottom of canvas. Add seed beads to form gravel. Glue into position and edge with pearl beads.
Form spirals of paper and glue into position along the edge of the path. Glue reindeer moss into the garden borders. Cut the inner flowers of the Mary Quite Contrary paper and glue along the borders. Add gems to flower centres. Form a plant support with three small pieces of straw. Add spirals of paper and more flowers.
Cut heart shapes from Sadie Hawkins paper. Use these to make flower shapes on the fence and shells to go along top of garden.
Add photos.
Cover the edge of the canvas frame with Doodlebug Flocked paper.
Add butterflies with craft wire spirals and pearl bodies to top right of canvas.
Paint two shells with acrylic paint. When dry, brush Stix2 pva on shell ridges. When dry, add Stix2 foil on the pva.
Add mesh to bottom left corner of canvas. Glue shells onto mesh and add a ribbon bow and a cluster of silver bells. Add Prima crystal swirls.
Finish by adding title. Enjoy!

Easter Inspiration!

What a fun and funky way to celebrate Easter! We love what Emma has done here... isn't she great! Hey Chick{s}
An Easter style layout influenced by my very own ‘free range coup’.

Materials List:
Bazzill Cardstock
Scenic Route patterned papers - Sumner, Alder Avenue Sumner, Kincald Avenue, Laurel, Scrap Strip 2, Loveland, Scrap Strip, Savannah, River Walk,
Chipboard Alpha- American Crafts.
Acrylic paint
bubble wrap
glossy black card
comb
wire
buttons
embroidery thread
corrugated card
inks
garden netting
silver spray
staples
foam pads
stationary tags
card scraps

To Create:
Cut Bazzill cardstock to size. Cut bubble wrap to size, enough to cover the middle of the layout and paint with blue acrylic paint. Stamp directly onto cardstock. Paint glossy cardstock with turquoise acrylic paint and whilst still wet, scratch off the paint with a comb to reveal the black underneath. When dry, cut the card to form the sides of the ‘coup’. Mount onto cardstock with foam pads.
Tear a section of corrugated card to form the base of the ‘coup’ and ink raised area (I used white, turquoise and black ink). Mount onto layout with foam pads.
Cut three eggs shaped ovals from patterned paper. Trim two down into ‘cracked eggs’. Decorate with paper bows made from patterned paper and fix onto the front of the eggs with foam pads. Add triple matted photos behind the eggs. Mark their position with pencil on the layout and dry brush acrylic paint directly onto the layout before adding the ‘eggs’. Again, I used foam pads on the ‘cracked eggs’.
Cut leaves from the Kincald Avenue and edge with black marker pen. I also cut an elongated leaf from the reverse of Kincald Avenue. Cut flower shapes from the reverse side of Savannah, River Walk (I used Saru’s Flower Ding as a template). Add a button to centre with embroidery thread. Mount onto the layout using foam pads.
Spray garden netting with silver spray and when dry, fix with staples on top of the corrugated card to emulate chicken wire. Add lengths of embroidery thread on top and fix on the back of the layout.
Wind wire around the end of a thin paintbrush to create springs and fix to layout amongst the flowers.
Cut cloud shapes from the reverse of Alder Avenue paper. Mount onto white cardstock and doodle checkerboard effect. Trim and mount onto pink cardstock and trim again. Mount onto layout with foam pads. Add a small butterfly (print onto white card, cut out and colour with crayons from dingbat Butterfly Heaven).
Add journaling (I used and inked and torn edge scrap of white card) and title using doodle American Crafts Chipboard Thickers.

Time for a close up!

Layout- Chill Factor (Masking, sponging, doodling)

First Published on Monday, April 14, 2008

Emma shares an AWESOME layout about her son and his "Chill Factor." There are tons of techniques in this one, so be sure to read her how-to.

SUPPLIES:
Bazzill cardstock
KI Memories lace cardstock (numbers)
Patterned papers: Basic Grey Figgy Pudding (Festive)
Scenic Route Laurel (Rookery Road)
Fancy Pants Kewl (Sublime)
Making Memories foam stamps (Stencil)
Tim Holtz grungeboard
Basic Grey wholy cow rub-ons (Euro edge) black and white
Making Memories {Note} worthy spiral notebook
Crafters Workshop template (mini dots)
7 Gypsies circular dots stamp
Hero Arts stars stamp
Stazon (black) gingham
Prima daisies.
Other:
Chalks, acrylic paints, dymo tape, card scraps, gems, ribbon, spray mount, large lids (I used a coffee jar lid).

HOW TO:
Spray the back of the KI Memories numbers cardstock with Spray Mount and stick into position on a Bazzill base. Apply chalks through the holes merging several colours together. Do not remove the lace card yet!!
Paint the rim of a large lid and print circles over the cardstock. Then using a stiff nylon brush, dip brush into black acrylic paint and ‘flick’ the end of the brush over the Bazzill so it produces paint splats. You can remove the cardstock base now!
Cut a 3” strip from the Basic Grey paper and tear a corner off at the bottom left. Fix at the bottom of the layout. Cut a 2” wide strip from the Scenic Route paper and fix to the left of the paper starting from the top of the Basic Grey. Add a 1 ½ strip of the Basic Grey paper next to this. I then tore a thin strip from the Fancy Pants paper and added this to the join.
Cut a rectangle of Fancy Pants paper and apply a Basic Grey rub-on to the left side. Cut an inch wide strip of Basic Grey paper and burn the right edge with a lighter (BE CAREFUL). Join these two sections together and mount your photo on top. Add a turquoise edged piece of {note} worthy paper (I applied white acrylic paint onto this) to the left and journal. Fix to centre of the layout, lining the bottom with the top of the Basic Grey paper previously applied to the bottom of the layout.
Paint a grungeboard skull with white acrylic paint and ink when dry. Glue onto black card and trim leaving a small outline. Add gems to the eyes and fix onto the layout using foam pads. Add gingham ribbon behind.
Apply several shades of slightly watered down white/blue/dark grey acrylic paint to the stencil stamp and stamp onto white Bazzill scraps. The stamping process should merge the paints. When dry, cut out and fix onto black card with foam pads. Trim leaving a small outline and glue onto tan coloured Bazzill. Again, trim leaving a small outline and fix onto black card with foam pads. Trim an outline again. This process gives you a lovely textured title.
Mark the position of your title on the layout. Using a 7 Gypsies stamp, stamps circular dots so they will overlap the title when fixed into position. Do the same using the Hero Arts star stamp and black Stazon. I also added more of the Wholy Cow rub-ons. Glue main title into place. Finish title using dymo and computer printed letters.
Dry brush turquoise paint around the edge of the layout. Add Wholy Cow rub-ons to the bottom right corner. I used white rub-ons on top of the Basic Grey paper then continued with the same rub-on in black onto the Bazzill layout base. Finish with a circle of dots doodled using the Crafters Workshop template and colour in dots.

Altered Mini book (Fasteners without a machine!)

First published on Monday, July 28, 2008

The new KI Memories Bloom little Felt albums are hot right now. Emma took hers to a whole new level by disengaging the inside to make it totally her own.

Mini Book
by Emma Trout

SUPPLIES
KI Memories Bloom Oasis 4X4 felt album
KI Memories Bloom Fly Free felt embellishments
KI Memories Bloom tab clips.

Card scraps, patterned paper scraps, Chipboard off cuts, embroidery thread, stationers comb binder or bind-it all, acetate, duct tape, ribbon, acrylic paint, self-adhesive Velcro, Diamond Glaze, buttons, rub-ons, Dymo and letter stickers, eyelets and setter, hot glue gun.

HOW TO
Start by carefully removing the page protectors from the album. Cut three pieces of chipboard- one @ 5.2cmX 12.2cm, one @ 2cmX 12.2cm and one @ 8.5cm X 12.2cm. Using duct tape, stick the pieces together to form the right hand side of the book (leave a few millimetre gap between pieces when sticking together to allow pieces to move freely). Cover the outside of the book with coloured card or patterned paper. Now line the two halves of the book together and stick on the inside with duct tape, hide the join on the outside with a piece of ribbon. Cut a thin piece of chipboard large enough to cover the inside of the back of book and glue into position.

Make the pages for your book using card and patterned paper scraps. I alternated between full sized pages, half pages and tags- some to be fastened to the right of the book and some to the left. Use the back of each tag/page for journaling. I also decorated pages with the tab clips and letter stickers. I punched the holes for binding before decorating each page. When the pages were finished, I added a piece of acetate that also had holes punched and trimmed the excess (I used diamond glaze to glue into position). This will provide strength to the holes and
prevent tearing.

Cut two pieces of a thin piece of cardstock @ 1.5cm X 11.5cm. Mark the position of the punched holes along the card and punch 1/8th inch holes in the centre of each marked hole.

Using two card scraps @ 12cmx 6.5cm score two lines along the centre 2cm apart. This will form a flap to protect the binding. Set eyelets down the centre so they line up with the holes marked on the thin card you have just cut.

Line your pages in position when finished. Using embroidery thread that has been doubled up, thread through a hole to form a loop, and then thread though the loop. Now thread through the eyelet (best side facing towards you) and through the card scrap hole. Split the two pieces of thread and thread each piece around and back through the hole to anchor into position and finish with a double knot. Trim the ends. Repeat this for each hole along both sides using different coloured threads. When finished glue each side into the inside of the book spine with a hot glue gun.

Decorate the front of the book with felt butterfly, buttons and rub-ons. Add self-adhesive Velcro as a fastener.
