Special Day With E

Last Monday Everett and I had such a special day together. There is a day like that Logan and I had when I was pregnant with Everett, where we went to the pumpkin patch and sat outside at Starbucks in Town Square. These days stay with you forever, and I know I will always remember this day in my heart with my sweet E. Really special days like that are so fleeting and they always make me think of one of my all time favorite Taylor Swift songs, Best Day. When they graduate high school it's memories like this that are going to do me in.

I don't know why all the trees change in the fall.
I know you're not scared of anything at all.
Don't know if Snow White's house is near or far away,
But I know I had the best day with you today.
~Best Day, Taylor Swift

For Everett's birthday I gave him a coupon to leave school early and have lunch and get a foot massage. He's heard me talk about doing that and asked several times over the past few months when he could go. Everett LOVES to be touched and scratched on and would happily live his life with someone attached to him at all times. He and Lolly are two peas in a pod when it comes to that. One day at Disney he looked at me around lunchtime, genuinely upset, and said, "Mom! You haven't even held my hand once today!"  It made me feel bad because that really matters to him, so I try to be cognizant of loving on him in some way as much as I can.

He asked me to pick him up at 11:10 on Monday so he could skip math. He thinks math is soooo boring. I told him we could go eat anywhere he wanted for lunch. Had this been a brother of his- either one- I can 95% guarantee we would have ended up at McDonald's. Not E. He proudly chose Salata. I asked him several times, and he insisted that's what he wanted. He walked up to the line proudly and ordered his usual like a grown man... spinach, kale, fruit, veggies and salmon on top. He added a Dr. Pepper for good measure.
I offered up some dessert choices after lunch and he quickly decided on Tiff's Treats. Two chocolate chip cookies and the rest of his DP to wash it down.
Then we headed to the foot spa place I like in Grapevine. The lady who did his massage was SO sweet to him and kind. She put a little towel over his eyes and he never moved. I kept thinking it would tickle him or he would get antsy and would peek over to check on him and Everett was relaxed and loving life.

It was such a fun day! Everett is a child after my own heart, because that's definitely my definition of a perfect day too. I loved our special time together so much!

Everett's 7th Birthday

Our sweet E is 7!!

We celebrated Everett's birthday on Monday, March 22nd with his buddies at FASST sports in Southlake. After having his birthday cancelled last year, I was so happy to throw him a big party and even happier that 20 boys (including his brothers) showed up to celebrate our special guy!

FASST is owned by Willie Pyle, who is a former NFL player. He is so great with the kids and happens to be a JES dad as well. Everett wanted a football theme. The boys played lots and lots of games of dodgeball, followed by a football tournament on teams. Everett was so sweet to "draft" Beck on his team, and they won the championship.

Afterwards we had Papa John's pizza, chocolate cake and some of E's favorite snacks (Skittles, Cheetos Puffs and chips). I laughed because the party room was a very small room Willie squeezed folding tables into. When we walked in (before the room was decorated), E goes, "WOAH!! This room is niiiice! Mom, did you write those plays up on the wall?"

For favors I got the boys 7 Eleven cups with coupons for free slurpees, football whistles, twisty straws and candy.

Then it was back to the gym for more dodge ball followed by tug of war. The boys had to be exhausted but none of them wanted to leave!

This will go down as one of my favorite birthday parties for E. It was PERFECT for him, and he was so, so, so happy! He was totally in his element, which thrilled Nick and I. It was so great to see him thriving and surrounded by so many of his buddies.

The next morning was E's actual birthday. Logan and Beck stayed up late to surprise him and made him cards and wrapped his gift (a Texas Tech bucket filled with slime, candy and V Bucks). They were so sweet- Logan worked so hard on Everett's card and Beck dictated an entire three page silolquy he had me write out just exactly.

On Tuesday morning we had donuts, of course and E opened his gifts. He had some cards with money in them, and from us he got a hoverboard and a coupon to have a special day with me- leave school early for lunch and a foot massage (at his request).

Tuesday night was interesting to say the least. We attempted a very bold endeavor and took the entire family to dinner at Mi Dia. Never again. There were 13 of us, and so of course it was loud and none of us could really visit. Scat choked on some chips, Cameron went missing for a little while and when we were waiting for our table Beck peed in the turf in front of Mi Dia. There was a spilled drink (which went all over Logan's lap and he took like a champ), Everett's name was misspelled on his birthday cake, Cameron, Beck and Colin crawled under the table and on the booth and none of them ate a bite of their dinners.

It was a complete and total fiasco. Thankfully, it goes down as a really hilarious memory. And also reminds us that we did not miss eating out in restaurants with little kids during Covid.
We got in the car and Logan turned to me and said, "Mom, I literally cannot handle a fancy restaurant again with the little kids." That line will go down in history.

Dear Everett,

What a joy it is to celebrate you! God gave us such a gift when he put you in our family. You are such a bright light! You smile just radiates so much joy. Dad and I always say you are the kindest person we know. You have a huge heart and you are so thoughtful towards others. Your big heart is your superpower. You LOVE Lolly, your younger cousins, and most of the time, Beck. You are so smart and an incredible athlete. It is so much fun watching you play baseball and football because you are just so talented and love competing and playing sports so much. You score so many touchdowns and play baseball lights out. Losing is still hard for you though. Especially when it's to Logan! We're working on that.

You still suck your hand and cuddle your giraffees before you go to bed or sitting on the couch or in the bean bag when you're really tired. You crack me up with your outlandish preferences on things- you always want the wildest, most bright colors. You and Logan both wear Under Armour shorts, Dragon shirts, your Dragon baseball sweatshirt and tall socks to school every day.

You are funny and have a quiet, witty and sweet sense of humor.

You are by far our most adventurous eater, and maybe most adventurous family member. You will try just about anything. One of my very favorite things about you is your laid back, go with the flow attitude (unless Logan beats you at something). Generally, you are just so happy to adapt and do whatever, eat whatever, try whatever... that is such a special thing that will serve you well as you get older.

You love listening to music and dancing... you always have some song playing on Alexa in your room. It makes me smile. You have made so many friends on your sports teams this last year and also at school. This is another thing that makes my heart happy, because you didn't really get that chance in kindergarten and I hated that for you. This year you have really come into your own and are thriving.

Dad and I are just so proud of you! You are a great kid, an amazing human and we're so lucky your our son! I can't ever put into words how much we all love you.

Happy Birthday 7th birthday, E!

Spring Break Part 2: Grandmas and Girls

Unlike last year, when we got home from Broken Bow we stayed pretty busy for the rest of Spring Break doing all kinds of fun stuff!

On Friday morning I went to workout and then the boys and I went and spent part of the afternoon with Jeanice. We had Chipotle for lunch and of course she had set out treats and her normal strawberries with powdered sugar for the boys. Beck thought he died and went to heaven. She showed us all kinds of old pictures and the boys played with the marble run I used to play with as a kid (it's in the same box in the same front closet oddly enough). While they did that she showed more of the beautiful china her mom, Memo painted. Memo's name was Laura Sue Eppler, but she divorced her husband (who was a Methodist minister) who had an affair and drank a lot, according to Jeanice. Good for Memo! Memo went to college and then eventually married another guy whose last name was Jenkins but Jeanice didn't care for him. It's interesting- on some of her china she signed it Laura Sue, some of it Memo, and some of it from later in her life is signed "Jean Jenkins." I think if I ever need to make up a name for something I might use Jean Jenkins. I like that.

On Saturday I ran a bunch of errands and the boys had baseball practice. Later in the afternoon I went to pick up Scat. She had dinner with us, and we had so much fun!! We drank rosé and talked, and she checked out my March Madness bracket. I love Scat so much and our time together is always so special and sweet to me. I felt exceedingly lucky- beyond measure, really- to be almost 40 years old and spend back to back days with my grandmothers. Got to get over and see Nanny soon too!

I also bought some "mom jeans," on sale at Loft. This is the new thing- along with center hair parts, which I'm gladly skipping- but I'm giving mom jeans a go. Sadly, skinny jeans are on the way out. Nooooo!

That night I signed my first contract for some free lance writing that is going to be published later in May. Granted, I will probably get like $10 max, but it doesn't matter. Someone is paying me actual American dollars for something I wrote!! My goal is to do more of this. I was SO excited!

Sunday was a lot of fun too! The high school cell group girls always have these ideas of things they want to do... movie night, taco night, game night, baking competitions, field trips... so many ideas. They found this salad place on Instagram called Crisp & Green and they were all dying to try it. It sounded like fun, so I agreed to take them. It ended up being Lucy, Kailey, Abigail, Lexi and me. After lunch we walked to an ice cream place they also found on their phones. I will give them credit- their sources are good. I loved the salad place and the ice cream place was fantastic. They had FLIGHTS of ice cream!! Afterwards we went over to a new boutique in Highland Park Village called Loveshack Fancy. We discovered we are not fancy or rich enough to own a single thing in there. It was fun to see!

Grandmothers and high school girls- all such a gift to me!

Spring Break Part 1: Broken Bow

Leaving town like...

We spent Spring Break just like we did last year in Broken Bow with the Allshouses. We left on Sunday and came home Thursday afternoon. I was a little anxious leaving, thinking that this time last year when we went and came home the world shut down. Then, when we went to Disney and came home it was snowmageddon and the world temporarily shut down again. Thankfully, this trip home was a lot less eventful!

We did all of our usual favorite things in Broken Bow... we hiked almost every day and built more fires than I can count. We shot the boys' bb guns, sat in the hot tub and ate tons of delicious food and snacks.

We went over to the state park area and rode the train one day and enjoyed lunch overlooking the river at Foggy Bottom.

Friends Trail was challenging for the little guys but so, so pretty and fun!

Jill and Luke were in Broken Bow with some friends, so I got to see her briefly one day.
Spring Break views...

Broken Bow is such a fun and easy getaway that we all really enjoy. It's so special we get to make these memories with the Allshouses. Lolly got a bath immediately when we came home and then pretty much slept for three days.
