Brooks William Reese

Brooks William Reese
May 23, 2014
12:39 p.m
20 1/2 inches long
8 lbs. 12 oz.

On May 23, I had my scheduled c-section.  My mom planned to come out to help with the new baby but was unable to arrive until after the c-section had started.  So we got up early and took the kids to our wonderful neighbor Angie Dewey's to play for a few hours.  We were told to arrive at the hospital at 8:00 a.m.  When we got to the hospital, we registered and had my blood drawn.  When I had surgery several years ago, I had to have a blood transfusion which gave me a rare antibody E. The hospital did not have my exact blood type with this antibody in stock and so they had to order it from the Red Cross.  This ended up delaying our C-section by two hours.  I was already hooked up to my IV so Tom and I were stuck in the pre-op room killing time.  It was actually quite fun and we enjoyed visiting and joking around.  We texted family members in Utah and asked for predictions about gender and birth weight.

Finally it was time to go back into the operating room.  I was a little nervous once they started the spinal.  My blood pressure dropped and I immediately threw up.  They let Tom in the room and immediately started opening me up.  It is a weird sensation to lie there and know that you are being cut open and not being able to feel anything.  Tom sat right by my head and was there to comfort me and answer questions.   He kept peeking behind the curtain and giving me a play by play.  When it was time to pull the baby out, he stood up to try to capture it.  Since we didn't find out the gender, we were really excited.  My water broke and Dr. Shoha reached in and scooped the baby out really quickly, then they all declared, "It's a Boy!"  We were so excited.  I had the impression that it was a boy for the second half of my pregnancy because it had been so similar to Sam's pregnancy.  So I was not surprised.

They immediately took the baby to the side to test his reflexes and get him cleaned up.  I had a pretty good view and watched him.  We discussed baby names and when I was all sewn up, they rolled me back to triage to recover. I was finally able to hold the baby when we got to the recovery room.  He was adorable.  We had two names picked out for him, Charles Robin or Brooks William.  It took us awhile to decide which name we thought suited him better.  By this point they had rolled me to my own room. We finally decided on Brooks William. Brooks was a name that we both liked.  William is a family name.  It is Tom's grandpa's name as well as Tom's dad's middle name.  I also have an ancestor named William Williamson who was the first to join the church in Texas.

Afterwards we went up to our room to rest. My mom came to bring the kids to meet Brooks.  Ainsley and Sam were both so excited.  They took turns holding Brooks.  We were worried how Sam would react to the new baby.  But we were pleasantly surprised, he was enthralled.  He wanted to hug and kiss Brooks and was fascinated by the new baby.  Ainsley was such a good big sister.  She and Sam watched as Brooks got his first bath.

We stayed in the hospital for 4 days.  For the first day, I was a little nauseous from the anesthesia.  But luckily it was only one day whereas with Sam it lasted 5 days.  Tom slept at the hospital each night to help with the baby since I was sore.  Brooks was such a good baby and only cried when he was hungry.  On Monday, May 26 it was Memorial Day so Tom took the kids to the Milford Memorial day parade.  Sam loves to see all the jeeps and army trucks.  While they were gone, I got permission to checkout.  Tom and the kids met me at the hospital and we all drove home in our Forrester.

Brooks had lost about 10% of his body weight in the hospital, so they had us take him to the pediatrician the next day.  They checked him out and said everything looked good.  We took him back one week later, and he had already gained all his weight back.  He is such a good baby.  He eats about every 4 hours and only cries when he is hungry.  Ainsley and Sam have loved having him home.  Sam constantly asks where Brooks is and doesn't like it when we leave him in the crib.  We are so excited to have this new addition in our family!
