4:44 pm - Mary Lou Lord in NJ and Boston + album news
I missed Mary Lou last time she was in NY cause I was in SF. I know, I know, I've seen her a zillion times, but her shows are always beautiful to me and just revive me somehow. Her music just makes me happy. So I am going to try to make these even though they are out of my way, but just an announcement to anyone else in these areas...

The Saint, 601 Main St., Asbury Park, NJ
Sunday November 18, 2001

T.T. The Bears, 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, MA (with Daniel Johnston)
Friday November 30, 2001

also, she has the Speeding Motorcycle EP coming out in January (with the version of the song used in the Target commercial that I still haven't seen) and the live album Rubric re-release coming out in February.
Or, you can order the fabulous live album NOW direct from Mary Lou for $12.50 to Mary Lou Lord, 1 Willow Avenue, Salem, MA 01970.

See Rubric for details. There's also an mp3 of hers there you can listen to. If you don't know who she is, she plays acoustic guitar and does lots of covers and is known for busking in the subway. That's the condensed version. I recommend the live album, recorded in the Boston subway by Mary Lou herself and featuring many covers, including "Thirteen," "Thunder Road," "By The Time It Gets Dark," "Beeswing," and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."

Okay, Mary Lou advertisement over.

12:40 pm - age ain't nothing but a number
okay, I've been thinking about it a little more...in some ways, jess is right, age is a construct. Or rather that feeling of being "old" that I was feeling earlier isn't so much about the number of years I've been alive as my outlook on life. Sometimes I feel like I am not where I thought I'd be in 2001, which in some ways is a good thing - in no way do I regret leaving law school to do what I do now. But in other ways, projects I once was super passionate about have totally languished, and I just wonder what will become of them. I guess it's a desire to see into the future, or a dislike of uncertainty. Not that there's anything I can do about uncertainty, but sometimes I just wonder what my life will be like in, say, 10 years. It's weird, because if I knew that answer, would that mean everything I do now is futile? I don't know. These are kindof pointless questions because they lead me in circles.

And Jess, just fyi, in a way it's that I'm pretty awed by you and some of the other 18-21 or so year olds I'm seeing here and at s-o, who are all way, way more mature and knowledgeable about a lot of things than I ever was at that age. I'm impressed and I guess jealous in a way, and I envy you guys and so that's part of it too.

12:08 pm - I don't totally understand this, but...
...I'll try to help technojunkie in his quest anyway.

Please visit this link: http://www.livejournal.com/talkpost.bml?itemid=14939590

You can read there what it's all about.

And can I just say, that almost every time I visit a new person on lj's profile (what's UP with my grammar lately? marla, is that ok?), they are totally younger than me. I'm not usually the type of person to say "I feel old," but coupled with the recent birthday, it's a little disconcerting. Maybe that's a stupid concern to have, but whatever.

5:35 pm - just what do they put in it to make it so popular?
651 lj users have "diet coke" as an interest. Scary, and yet comforting to know that there are plenty of fellow addicts. I drink 2-3 liters of it a day. And you?

4:30 pm - I'd rather be a slut or a lesbian...
from pagesix.com:

"IF she hadn’t met George Stephanopoulos, Alexandra Wentworth would have become either a slut or a lesbian. “I had accepted the fact that I would probably just have a series of relationships . . . and produce children from a multitude of partners,” Wentworth told Glamour. “I would be the female Mick Jagger . . . before meeting George, I pondered a future with an adopted baby or a lesbian lifestyle.” As it turned out, Wentworth met her future hubby on a blind date and within three months was engaged to the Clinton administration stud."

then again, I think I am already a slut...but I mean really - Stephanopoulos??? And you know, she could've become a lesbian slut. Or a slutty lesbian. Or something.

And I just have to say that this whole dishes thing is getting even more raunchy than our Hooters total objectification of political figures discussion. Not that that's bad or anything...

3:56 pm - You've got style, that's what all the girls say...
thanks Mary for your help with the poll info...but I'm too cheap to do the fancy ass lj poll. oh and I just wanted to say I like boys who follow instructions (you know who you are).

So...

just vote in the comments section.

What should I wear when I do this dishes/sex thing?

1. nothing

2. lacy maroon bra and black thong

3. hooters t-shirt, jean skirt, fishnets and heels (a la sat. night)

4. see through black shirt, no bra, tight jeans

5. ______________________ (feel free to make a suggestion)

if I had a digital camera I would offer visuals to go along with this, but alas, I don't.

oh man, I just entered a contest and had to check the 26-30 box - welcome to a new age category rachel!

2:53 pm - I made it through the wilderness, somehow I made it through...
Thank you to marlatiara for the following fine sentence (correcting my faulty grammar):

I just want somebody who I can fuck and whose dishes I can do.

Applicants welcome...

If I accidentally deleted your comment Marla, sorry, I was trying to link to it. But I want to give you proper credit!

you are the new grammar queen!

1:59 pm - Happy Birthday To Me
warning: LONG post.

okay, yesterday's freakout is over. I slept super late, till around 1, and aside from the plane crash that my brain isn't processing right now, I'm feeling pretty good.

First I just have to say that I have the best friends in the world. Well, I don't know if that can be quantified, but I am just so happy to have the friends I do that it makes me want to cry. Cynthia, Irena (even tho you never answer your phone Miss Manateen!), Cara, and Diana - I love you so much! The fact that 3 of you are in SF sucks but it does mean I can call you late at night. I mean, I don't know what I'd do without you guys to talk to about the minutiae of my psyche, and you fucking understand. I love that and wish I could spend hours every day chatting with you. That's what I was thinking about when I woke up the first time this morning, how grateful I am for my friends. Relationships come and go, often in really bad ways, but friends are, or should be, forever. And when you find people who can totally understand you, who you can tell anything to, no matter how weird or mean or crazy or fucked up, or happy or secret or personal, that is brilliant. And I love you all for that.

The end of last week was just insane...Thursday night I went to Katz's deli with the writerly folks and then did the last Tough Girls reading, which went really well. So that reading was awesome and then I went to Throb and met up with Sadie and it was okay, I mean I was very happy to see her but the whole Throb thing was kindof making me nervous. I get a little antsy when there are too many people around sometimes. Oh, it's all coming back to me that I posted about that, the whole looking in the freezer/office thing (it was an office but with a freezer-type door and I wanted to explore it but she didn't). Okay, well sorry...

So Friday. Well, work was a little hectic. I have tendonitis. My boss was super sweet to me though. So then I got all dressed up and wore this flowy blue slip thing I have, and went to the Lesbian Sex Mafia meeting (don't you love their name?). I am the new LSM Mailings Officer and also the Membership Coordinator. Soon I will find out more about what those jobs mean. Then Midori gave her presentation about negotiating to get what you want. She was great and really funny, and luckily I escaped my little role play cause I was pretty nervous about it. Then we met Susan and Cheryl and Emma at Bowery Bar for that new Tuff Titty party and admired the prettily-lighted trees outside and drank pricey drinks and played footsie under the table, and then we got a taxi cause it was cold out and I wanted to come home and cuddle.

Saturday morning I woke up and just had so many lovely birthday wishes, it totally made me happy. I love that lj sends them to everyone, and a really huge THANK YOU to everyone who wrote me. I was all floating on that. And also late to meet my family for lunch, but they had to forgive me cause it was my bday. I had yummy filet mignon and this chocolate cake for dessert, and then my mom got me the Andrew Morton Madonna bio which I didn't read yet but has some hot photos. I walked around with my mom a bit a went to the post office and then needed to come home and take a little nap after being up till 4 am!

So then my cousin and I took the train over to Hooters. Hooters was...well, it was different than I had expected, but it was awesome. I think we had about 12 or 13 people there, and our waitress was totally hot (she won the little poll we had), and I'll have photos of her soon. I got to do a little dance for my "21st" birthday. I was just kindof giddy (not from the beer!), just from having fun. I gave people books with my stories in them as a little thank you. We dined on yummy wings and curly fries, and the service was ok except that Danielle had to wait ages for her grilled cheese. We had a little poll going as to who was the hottest person working there (cause of course Allison and I in our Hooters t-shirts were the hottest people IN there!). I love my Hooters t-shirt and can't wait to wear it again. It was just lots of fun, and descended into total objectification with me asking everyone if they'd fuck Hillary Clinton (then Hillary vs. Jackie O.), Rudy Guliana, and various other famous figures. That was lots of fun. I got some really dirty porn mags from Allison and Marty, the Preaching to the Perverted soundtrack from Lesley, a gift certificate to Toys in Babeland from Winnie, candles from Forde, and I think that's it. (S, where's my promised backrub?). So then, after making initial plans for my make-your-own-dildo party (details soon), I just made the biggest fool of myself by reading my Monica Lewinsky story and this story "How To Fuck In High Heels" by Shar Rednour on the subway train. Actually I had a lot of fun doing it and would love to get drunk and do it again. Oh, and I found out that Cynthia didn't make Hooters cause she was in a car accident, but she's okay, her nose is a bit smashed up though - I'm very sorry about that! So we went to Slipper Room for like 5 minutes but it was too smoky and loud. I had wanted to get cosmos and play the naked girl game somewhere but eventually got too tired and came home and cuddled and slept.

Lest I forget...the official word of the weekend was nonplussed.

Thank you to Aaron for my lovely birthday song, I don't think anyone's ever sang me a birthday song (that they wrote!) before. I've saved it on my cell phone!

Yesterday I saw my dad and we had a nice meal at Surya, and he gave me a few little gifts. We saw the Drew Barrymore movie, Riding In Cars With Boys, which was not very good, very disjointed and just oddly told. Then I just read stuff online and then stayed up on the phone till 4 am, plotting crazy New Year's adventures.

I'm almost done with Mike Ford's new book The Little Book of Neuroses, which was funny but definitely more serious than his other ones. I just ate some greasy Chinese food and watched Tristan on The Other Half (thanks Winnie!). I actually got some things out of her 5 minute talk, some things I was mulling over last night and want to work on. The whole talking about sex thing. Not that I don't talk about sex all the time, but in some situations I just don't know what to say and I don't like that feeling cause I usually know what I want to say and have plenty to say.

I may never finish my essay about SF boy, cause I feel like what's the point, but one thing I wrote in there was that I just want somebody I can fuck and do their dishes. Sorry, there was no real way I could see to make that sentence grammatically correct (but feel free to try!), and I don't mean that to sound as crass as it might seem. I don't just mean anyone will do, or that I'm really only looking for those two things, but what I mean relates to what I was saying about my friends. I don't think I'm necessarily looking for some soulmate, some boy or girl who will sweep me off my feet, because I really have my friends as people to talk to and who fulfill a lot of that, and I love them with all my heart and soul. I am really pretty comfortable with my life, save for the things I need to work on which are really things I need to personally work on. And for a while with T. it was nice to imagine that we might have some future together, but I got so carried away with that, with this dream of us, that I lost track of the things I want, so when he didn't want to see me anymore I was so crushed. And to now learn that his ideas of who I am are really different than my ideas of who I am (not to mention that who I thought he was is very different fromwho he is), really hurt me, but also made me see that that just means that even more I have to stay true to myself. I can't let other people's judgments or morals interfere with what I think is the right thing for me. I know it seems funny, and it's not like it's super spiritual or something, but the more I think and talk about and do this dishes thing, I realize that it does mean something to me. If I'm at someone's house that I've just had sex with and I do their dishes it's...my way of trying to be a small part of their life, to help them with something, to do something that I enjoy that is also useful. It can be kinky in its way, which I think is best left to fiction, but it is something to me. I think it's not about the dishes per se but about feeling wanted. I am probably so not making sense, I guess I'm just trying to say that I just want to find people I can have fun with but who I care about enough to do their dishes too.

My day got off to a late start but I feel renewed somehow, maybe it's cause I just shared (almost) every thought that's been in my head the last few days. Damn, I wrote a lot, hopefully that will be the theme of the day. But sometimes you just need to get it all out.

Silicon Alley Daily is reporting that there's a good chance there'll be no more BUST mag - Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel were dismissed. :( I love BUST and was looking forward to writing for them!

2:51 pm - and I'm television sick and I'm television crazy
a super quick summary of the last few days...

I went to the doctor today. Now, the doctor herself was great and Callen-Lorde on the whole seems promising, but...I should not have to wait an hour and a half after my scheduled appointment time to see a doctor. Anyway, I have tendonitis. She gave me a prescription for a strong painkiller and I need to use a wrist rest, and she advised against getting a laptop, but I want one anyway.

My date went really well. I know, usually I blab away about every detail about everything, but I'll just say that I didn't get to sleep till something like 4:15 am, and there was much kissing, silliness, lurking in a potential freezer, and using the dictionary involved. And sex. And the phrase "you're such a dork." I have never had anyone say that to me SO MANY TIMES in one night! I guess I am a dork, but I was assured that this was said as a compliment. Hmmm...

So I am just way past tired. It's been a really busy few weeks and I have much to catch up on this weekend. And I'm gonna be 26. I guess as an age "26" doesn't mean all that much to me, but it still feels weird. My mom was 26 when she had me. And it just sounds "older," it's the 2nd half of my twenties, I don't know, it's just weird.

I had a nice lunch at Two Boots yesterday with fellow Scorpio tacologic yesterday, and I hope I didn't talk his ear off too much. I had dinner at Katz's, a NY institution, that I'd never eaten at before - I had a hot dog and half a pastrami sandwich. Both yummy, but I think I like corned beef better than pastrami. And thank you miss brooklyngirl for coming to my reading -sorry there weren't any books left for you to buy! Throb was fun, and I got to see some people I haven't seen in a while and catch up on the latest gossip, and get copies of the new On Our Backs with the sexy "Lucky and Dahlia" on the cover.

I'm not much of a horror fan, but I read an interesting interview today with Poppy Z. Brite about horror and HIV in a&u; magazine. I watched Felicity the other night; I hadn't seen it in ages and was all confused about what everyone was up to, but pretty much caught up. I think she needs a new guy, the whole Noel and Ben thing has been going on forever.

I'm excited for the Hooters birthday party tomorrow. So far I think we're about 10 or so people.

proving I really have just about no life whatsoever (but really now I'm going to the post office), I was just browsing friends' Amazon wishlist, and found this book on someone's and the title made me laugh.

I just have to say...I heart Annalee Newitz. Check out her latest Techsploitation column - I mean, Annalee is awesome anyway, but to get me to laugh out loud makes her extra special. This is what made me laugh:

"On a page inexplicably decorated with pirates and skulls, I found shots from Tina and Chad's wedding, attended by only four people, all of them in street clothes. Why? I'll never know. Nevertheless, I do know that Brad likes role-playing games and Tina likes living in Delaware."

I bought the new Oprah magazine and Entertainment Weekly - EW I wanted for some Britney Spears cover story about "Confessions of a Sex Kitten" - she's a virgin and a sex kitten? okay...

that's about it. more adventures in procrastination to follow later.

1:00 pm - and if you ever want a fashion tour, I'll walk down your block...
My brain is so overstimulated, I have so much to do, I'm in the middle of two things I want to post here! I mean, I'm behind on my main writing, and then I'm behing on my recreational writing - what is up? Too much sleep! Maybe today I can finish my review of Dancing at the Blue Iguana and my lamentation about the SF boy who I'm still pretty obsessed with.

So last night I had a lovely dinner with my mom and grandmother at Dish of Salt, a very lovely Chinese restaurant, and it was actually fun - no fighting, arguing, anything like that. And yummy food. Then I took the N, then the M one stop, to Park Slope to Rising for my reading. It was okay...not too many people came (but thanks to Lesley and Millie for attending) and I wore my "I heart NY More Than Ever" t-shirt and this denim skirt that I love but that ripped so now basically is not too suitable for wearing, but I wore it anyway. And I wore my fishnets, the ones that tore on the cab outside the gay prom. I was nervous reading but it went okay. If I had photos I'd post them. Hopefully brooklyngirl will bring her digital camera (please?) on Saturday to Hooter's to document the festivities.

And um...I got a little embarrassed by Red, but it's ok. I guess I have a big mouth when I'm excited about something, like having a date (is it a date?) with a certain person tomorrow night. Well, anyway, whatever, it's not a secret, I'm excited, but I was a little embarrassed last night. Just have to figure out what I will wear to tomorrow's whirlwind evening of Annie Sprinkle's reading at 5, Katz's deli dinner at 6, reading at 7:30 and then Throb. I'll rummage around.

Well, silly me, I do love NY (hence the t-shirt), but goodness gracious - wtf is up with our election? It's so scary. Will he be worse than pre-9/11 Rudy? I really didn't think he would win, and it's just plain scary. But I still love this city, just not the people who voted for Bloomberg!

Soon I have to be like laurabxox and get the new Britney album. But I'm afraid to enter record stores now, cause I spend so much. Then again, I spend a lot of money online.

current music: magnetic fields, "let's pretend we're bunny rabbits"

4:23 pm - Bartenders needed?
My cousin is just starting out as a bartender and wants to find a full time (or part time I guess) job in a bar. He was looking into Brooklyn Brewery but I don't think they need anyone now. His ultimate goal is to brew beer, but for now he wants to bartend. He just completed a bartending class a few months ago and has been bartending at parties and stuff. If anyone knows of any bars that need a bartender in the NYC area, please let me know. I can vouch for his drink-making ability and he has a resume and all that jazz. thanks!

1:21 pm - media stars
It seems like half my writer friends (I am exaggerating here, I do have more than 6 writer friends) are on tv or in the paper lately.

First, Tristan Taormino was on The Other Half last Friday. I haven't seen it yet but am getting a tape of it soon. I think her Howard Stern appearance from a few years ago was also on E!, but seeing as how I don't have cable and rarely watch TV, I didn't know about it.

Then, I just read today that Charles Anders was on To Tell The Truth (and notice the use again of the .tv domain). I didn't even know that this show was on.

Then, today Thomas Roche is quoted in the
new Dan Savage column
. It's pretty cool to see your friends getting some good media attention. Plus I can bug them for tips on getting into these things when I write my stuff. I want to be quoted in Dan Savage's column too!

12:22 pm - the fay weldon connection
I haven't read any of Fay Weldon's novels for a few years, but I was extremely interested in the controversy surrounding her new book, The Bulgari Connection. Bulgari commissioned her to write a work of fiction featuring their jewelry, and I believe that originally it was just meant to be used in house, but now it's available at bookstores. Lots of people attacked Weldon for taking their money, but as the review I linked to above points out, it's not really that different from people who already use the names of stores or hotels or companies to brand their characters or show something about them via the labels they wear. And I think as shorthand, we all do that. Maybe it's not "fair" or "right," but if we hear that someone listens to band X or wears brand Y, do we not make certain assumptions about them? To me, the fact that many people do this in their daily lives, made it seem hypocritical for so many writers to be criticizing Weldon. Also, we don't know how much she got from them, but assuming it's a substantial amount, who would refuse that money?

I mean, some people would, and I would for some companies, but I don't see anything wrong with it and I found myself intrigued by the book's description.

It reminds me of the recent Jonathan Franzen/Oprah controversy, with him saying that having her "Oprah's Book Club" sticker on the cover was akin to an endorsement. Well, I think he is certainly entitled to his opinion, but by having a publisher you are also "endorsing" that company, even though obviously you don't endorse every book published by them. I just think it's foolish to pretend that publishing and writing aren't businesses. And what Bulgari and Weldon have done has just made that connection all the more up front. And it sounds like she doesn't shy away from not showing Bulgari in a "perfect" light; it doesn't appear that they told her what to write, just that they should be mentioned. I find it interesting from the Bulgari perspective, that it was worth it to them to pay Weldon to write about them.

I said a while ago that my dream is have my work featured in 6-packs of Diet Coke, as I'd seen done with some fiction writers. Well, I have other dreams too, but I would love that, because I already am a huge consumer of Diet Coke and pretty much advertise it in my daily activities anyway. It's rare to not see me at my desk or at home or walking around without a Diet Coke.

So that's my however many cents. I'll write a review of the book once I've read it. Which reminds me that I went to see Dancing at the Blue Iguana last night, and am working on a review. It wasn't anywhere near as good as I'd hoped, but I'm glad I saw it.
