10:45 pm - crazy weekend.........
barely any sleep, but lots of fun....

good time with good people, prodigalson's D&D; game.... champagne brunch, miniature painting and more good company.

i have to brag on the prodigal. he built the single-most beautiful piece of 25mm-scaled scenery i've seen outside of a magazine. it's part of a ruined gothic cathedral, half-covered in moss.... it's fantastic. i will try and get my grubby mitts on a digital camera so he can show everyone!

4:43 pm - growl
sometimes people have such great ideas, and manage to express them so accusatorially it makes me want to disassociate myself from them.

two people have done this today.

you're right--and so are you....

do you both have to be such pretentious shits about it?

some of you know this: i am a slob. i eventually get horked off at the masses of clutter in my home and go on cleaning sprees, but it takes a lot of momentum, and incentive.

some of you also know the only sure-fire way to get me going when it comes to cleaning up my mess...

cleaning house is never glamorous. you're dirty, dusty, and bleh. there are a million things i'd rather do than scrub my toilet--like stick needles beneath my fingernails....

enter the tiara.....

i bought this for a larp, and fell in love with it. i always wanted to wear it.. i would make up reasons to wear it. it only made sense that one day, when i was scullery-maiding around my house, i would absentmindedly place it on my head. it became an instant habit. vacuuming became less of a chore and more of a gene kelly dance number. dishes mere a mere annoyance.

some gamers have their hats of power... i have a tiara of domestic apotheosis.

some of the sweetest, flooring correspondence i've had since the boy and i broke up and our tradition of beautiful letters died.

it wasn't even mildly romantic, and it still made my eyes misty...

what a gorgeous day... even if it is cold...

11:46 am - it is amazing....
what time spent with great people, a really good yoga class, and a perfectly-crafted vegetable egg foo yung with shiitake mushrooms thrown in for fun can do for the psyche.

i came home to loving kitty-children, a few quick-but-soothing conversations with people via phone and keyboard, and a good book.

one of the nicest things about wednesdays is hearing about m's feng shui game. i just love the crazy stories :)

right now, i am salivating to the point of distraction.... the rainbow health food co-op in town has a little cafe (much like the rainbow in atlanta) and they're serving the happiest portabellos today. ms. anarkey and prodigalson and i are galloping down there shortly.

10:59 am - no day but today, but here are some highlights from the last few..
the last few days have been fairly eventful...

------------------------------------------------------------------

i've dyed my hair (just a touch up after almost four months--still happy coppery chestnut)

this is no big surprise to any of you who know me... however, here are the weird bits...

1) i am NATURALLY growing stark white hair now.... it's all centered right at my part (all of it being like 5 strands.) not only does this mean that i'm getting old boys and girls, it also means that i'm gonna have a kick-ass rogue streak in a few years. BOO-YA.

2) apparently, my hair is no longer neutral brown anymore. it has bumped up a few shades, and is now a really dark neutral blonde... i stuttered a lot when she said that...
melissa: ...with your hair being such a dark blonde, it's pretty easy to keep ...
me: (splutter) what did you just say?
melissa: well, your hair being blonde..
me: (more cartoon character noises) WHAT? i can't be going blonde... i mean mom was a blonde but dad has dark hair, and *stunned to silence.

----------------------------------------------------------------

my sword showed up on my doorstep last night. AMAZING turnaround time.... I saw the box from the parking lot, and was thrilled.

there was this weird guy hanging out on my landing but he backed the fuck up when i went running up the stairs squeaking like a mouse and clumping like an elephant about "MY SWORD MY SWORD!!"

*grin*

------------------------------------------------------------------

subtle_shadow and i went to the coffeeshop last night to just sit and talk. what a fantastic time. archaicangel met up with us later and we beat a hasty retreat to a dining establishment (only regret: not finding out whose car had the "CHAUCER" vanity plate that was in the lot on the car with Ireland stickers and other oddities; and not at least getting the nice seminary guy's NAME we talked to right before we left...)

------------------------------------------------------------------
AA and i came back to my house and she did laundry/read sandman while i talked to onceupon about her harrowing day at work. *shakes head* i miss the girlie.

------------------------------------------------------------------

shortly after, i settled down into bed, talked to a newer, and very dear friend until it was time to sleepy sleep. bedtimes stories kick butt.

i was trying to describe to prodigalson what he smells like--not his dryer sheets, or anything he puts on him, but just him...

and i realized the closest thing I could come up with was the smell of well-preserved, antique books.....

*grin*

i'm such a bookwhore.

4:45 pm - boobies boobies everywhere (or, why can't i find a decent picture of a girlie paladin)
I have a huge beef with 90%+ of fantasy artists.

I'm playing a paladin in prodigalson's D&D; game: she's built like a Valkyrie Ice Princess TM, and (like most seventeen year old girls) thinks she's an enormous ox of a girl and sometimes wishes she could be a dainty flower.

With every new campaign, I try and find an image I can use to represent the character.

Miri was a breeze: Cate Blanchett in elf ears was a perfect match for the vain but well-meaning bard-wizard.

Sabine: the Art of Sin site had an ass-whooping chick with a katana. Sure, she'd have to sew herself into her trousers every morning, but she was pretty, fairly noble-looking, and fully clothed.

Finding elfy waifs: you got it!
Finding rogues: no big deal.
Finding female fighters: also a popular subject.
Finding women warriors who aren't
a.) wearing a thong
b.) wearing crop-top or pasties armor
c.) perfectly coifed harlot-types with porn star mouths and their eyes half-lidded with their insatiable lust for battle

damned near impossible.

I understand that men buy the majority of fantasy books and art... that a large percentage of these guys are
a.) 13 and haven't been near an actual breast since they were weaned
b.) 34 and living in mom and dad's basement, and still haven't gotten much closer to getting any.
Fantasy art is geared towards the target audience, and I respect that many of them really want gravity-defying boobies on a chick with a sword so large, it'd make Freud blush.

Can I have just a LITTLE realism? Here is my advice to would be warrioresses.

Thongs and loincloths are not exactly sensible dragon-slaying attire. Some may disagree and sing the praises of butt-floss, but most women in truth look like extremely pinched sumo wrestlers in thongs. Even women who are blessed to have buns suited for the fashion must concede they're inferior for protecting the body when compared to a decent pair of pants and sturdy leg armor.

And like any unicorn would let this brazen hussy ride her...

The same goes for bare midriffs in battle. Who the hell wears a chainmail bikini when smiting evil? Even if you do have a killer six-pack, the distraction will only buy you a few seconds. Lordak the thug is not going to take kindly to you carving up his henchmen, and though a shred of remorse may flicker through him, he will still carve open your squishy innards like deli meat.

She's cute, but can she take a broadsword to the belly?

Let me not forget this fantastically alluring, but otherwise non-protective chest covering... I don't are what anyone tells me--Brunhilde did not wear a brass bra.... well, not to battle, anyway..

Firstly, i'd just like to say that i have worn chainmail over bare skin before (though not out-of-doors), and that shit pinches places that should not be pinched. What. Ever. While the local heroes might encourage you to wear gravity-defying metal pasties out dungeon-crawling, might I be the unpopular voice of reason and remind you that chest armor should be uplifting as well as functional. I love my nipples as much as the next girl, but as far as protection goes, I'm really worried about my breastbone and vitals more than I am about losing a boob. The amazons turned that into a strong fashion statement, after all.

And this is just uncalled for....

Bah! Humbug!

Poor Kate shall have to wait for some fantasy artist to get a freakin' clue.

4:19 pm - introductions and farewells
we had a goodbye party for the museum director today.... it seemed like millions of people were there. she is an awfully demanding woman, but i've always liked her very much. my favorite mental snapshot of this woman involves two very stodgy, dark-suited Smithsonian men, looking a bit embarassed and intimidated by her shocking pink raw silk suit ensemble. she was spectacular and vibrant, and those men could not in a thousand years compare.

i tiptoed through the crowd to extend my warmest wishes, and she caught my hand like a grandmother would an errant child, and proceeded to introduce me to half a million of the people present. Department people, family members, but the former political office holders take the cake.

"this is our webmaster, deirdra, and she just does the most creative things with a computer... i am so envious.... you see, she is young enough where she can wear all these wonderful hairpieces...and she has pink and green hair, and i am just so jealous because i am too old to accessorize in such an inventive manner."

the nicest thing is, out of all the older people with whom i work, i know that she may gush on and on to the point of mortifying me..... but i know she really does like my hair. I think if she had been born in the 1700s, chances are, she'd be most-likely-to-be-caught-with-an-actual-birdcage-complete-with-bird-on-her-head.

4:47 pm - whew, been away for a while...
last week was hell, but the nicest parts of it...

despite being sicker-than-shit, i still managed to have a great time while onceupon was in town... there's nothing like a week-long slumber party.

the weekend was a great number of many things, mostly good. the only problem i'm having lately is that i never seem to get enough sleep, even when i sleep a good bit.

and lately, i've not been updating much because i've been awfully busy. i'd provide a list, but it's probably easier just to say "i've been awfully busy enjoying life and the people/things who/that matter...

tonight is yoga, which should be interesting... i'm feeling rather half in, half out of my body today... like part of me is out running around the universe whilst i sit banging at the keyboard. a project is damned near complete, thank heavens. subtle_shadow is my partner in crime tonight--looking forward to the time with the mat and the breathing, and the conversations we've been having. even if the topics aren't exactly the most pleasant things in the world, the depth of talk is always good.

tomorrow is writing day.... i'm hoping to work out some ideas rattling in my head..

12:52 pm - my weekend was a surreal blur
of vampires, fake hair, coconut rum, red-bladed assassins, sushi, weaponry, pvc, log-throwing kiltwearers, bagpipers, sneering Lothlorien elven bartenders, blurts and mis-steps, nice punch, caustic-grade humor and good friends.

and really, what more can anyone ask for?
