tell me something.... I was thinking about this, and I would like you all to humor me. Describe me. Dont flatter me, mock me if you must, but when you think of me, what comes to your mind right away. Again, feel free to be critical. The thing is, I know who I am and what I think, but I am always curious to see how others percieve me. I make a lot of assumptions about how people take in what I say and do, and I wounder how accurate they are. update Well, I had a very interesting weekend. I guess it would be in appropriate to discuss it in detail as it involves some sort of illegal activity (at least I think it is, I'm not sure) and plus it involves another party who I'd rather not mention. Lets just say that the weekend was interesting in a fun way to say the least.
I'm also comming to the conclusion that you cannot have a constant sexual relationship, at least not an AMAZING constant sexual realtionship with somone and have neither party get attached. I'm doing okay, but I have hurt girls about this before and dont want to do it again. Oh well, I'll figure it out I guess. I'm not really even that worried about it, I just needed something to rant about.
Aside from that, I had my first official day of work. Talking on the phone all day, networking or what not. I'm still not sure how I feel about this job and with another one waiting for me that I know I am gonna love its hard to keep focused, but oh well. | Sunday, June 16th, 2002 | 12:24 am |
Downriver Well I've been back from Greece now for like 2.5 weeks so i'm now comming to the point where the few things I like about downriver have gotten old. In fact I have come to the following conclusion....no matter where I call home (which i did in ann arbor, and still do in Southgate and Rhodes, Greece), despite sharing several important characteristics with people from that region i ALWAYS feel like an outsider. For example: Downriver- I LOVE the down to earthness of the people here. I never heard of Abercrombie or North Face till I went to u of M. The "rich kid" in my high school who drove the only "expensive car" in the low had an old hand me down lincoln town car, rather than some redicilous shit you see kids north of 8 mile driving. People dont talk a lot of shit and are generally pretty friendly down here. But on the down side, downriverats lack some serious ass ambition. Many (not all) people are happy living in thier little bubble never going north of outer drive or west of middlebelt. They settle for a decent job rather than one they would love. They settle down with whoever they impregnate first or with whoever impregnates them first, which usually ends up in divorce 5 years later. Shit man, a good portion of my former classmates already have like 2 kids and an ex spouce. These are the people that listen to pop music, own "kill osama" bumper stickers, support nascar, and frequently attend movies with lots of explosions and cheesy plots. These are the people who blindly support the war on drugs while drinking a couple of 40s a night over a pack or three of cheap smokes. Now dont get me too wrong here, there are a lot of cool ass people down here, and like I said some of the most frendliest laid back folk, but i just have a tendency to question people who never demand more, you know? Anyways, I have been here now for some time, and its starting to drive me nuts. This endless oil, potholed, asphalt jungle is numbing my sences. Creativity is dwindeling. If I get to the point where I REALLY want to see a Van Diesel (sp?) movie, shoot me please. But what pisses me off the most is when I talk to someone from my high school where we get in the whole "what are you doing nowadays" discussion. At times they will say something like "i'm working for this contractor" or factory jobs, an hourly position at a medical facility, that sort of thing. Now I TOTALLY respect that. Hell, I LOVE the blue collar mentality, i mean I was raised in a working class family, that part of me will always be there. BUt what gets me mad is when they assume that I'm making the "big bucks" and that I look down on them cause "Im gonna be a sucess (RIGHT) while they are still working hard." Fuck that. Suffice to say, I dont think I can live downriver for the rest of my life. Ann Arbor- Now I just moved out of a place I called home for the last four years of my life. On the surface I LOVED this town. People my age everywhere, I could get into interesting debates at randezvous, cool (yet over priced) stores, walking down the street and randomly bumping into like 10 people you know....good times. But I could never live there either. First off, some of the people drive me nuts. I refuse to talk to hippies about global economics anymore. I just dont like it when some upper middle class kid from the east coast who spends his parents money on pot thinks that just cause s/he dont bathe regularly, listens to bob marley, and eats expensive organic food thinks s/he knows whats best for families like mine. Anyways, I dont want to get into an economic rant here, but I'm sure all'a'yall know what i mean. Ann Arbor is another bubble, and like all bubbles, filled with ignorance. Many people are smart, hell most of the town is WAAAAY smarter than me, but shares my ignorance. Sadly, ann arborites are too stuborn to learn about the world outside the bubble and prefer to safely precieve it subjectively. While I probably felt more at home here than i did downriver, it was only because of the amazing friends i met, and my love for well planed cities. Jacobs would be totally all about downtown ann arbor. The problem was, however, I could not just take expensive vacations on spring break, I could not afford the INSANE parking tickets I got, I could afford "organic" food, I could not afford a decent apartment, I only bought clothes when i REALLY needed them and even then it was on the $10 clearence racks at urban and structure...basically I felt that ann arbor was designed to make kids richer than me feel at home, and people like me to feel like I should have went to U of M dearborn. The funny thing is, I'm not even poor, hell I'm REALLY close to upper middle class and I still felt left out like that in this town. WHile it was a great four years, the general populace needs to get thier heads out of thier arses. I'm just fortunate that I met so many cool ass people who were more or less in my boat (or at least cared enough to understand where I"m comming from). Rhodes, Greece- This summer I realized that while i have only spent three years of my life in greece, due to the fact that i was there for many summers, and eventfull summers at that, I did a LOT of growing up in greece. It was in greece that i expierenced my first crush, my first kiss, my first girlfriend, etc. I have been clubbing there since i was 15. Heh, I even bought my first "electronica" cd there too (dont make fun of me it was a trance compilation) when i was 17. But like I realized that Rhodes is as much my home as Southgate, and I love it there. The problem is, Rhodians while very warm and friendly people are also very overly fashionable and sometimes overly critical. When I go out, I like my t-shirt and jeans look, but often in rhodes that dont fly. Plus, while there are many things I love about the european lifestyle, I just cannot leave the US cold turkey. The american lifestyle while it has major flaws at times can be so damn convient. I remember once like 3 years ago it was 11pm on a sunday night and i decided at that moment I needed cinder blocks and a board of wood to put my tables on in my room, and sure enough there was Home Depot open 24/7 with everything i needed. As much as I hate the mall, i cant find jeans like Structure's in greece. And even though I hardly watch tv, I like how any time of day I can watch some rerun of some sitcom I used to love. America is a bad drug that I'm addicted to, and for that I still feel like a bit of an outsider in greece. Okay, there you all have it, my ranting is over, a lot of this shit was a long time comming and probably does not make much sence seeing as how I am tired but oh well. G'night. Wing Wing the Cup and Hopeless Optimism Well last night some friends and i decided that we wanted to be downtown when the wings won. It was a good choice as we packed into the Loco Bar and Grill with our aluminum foil stanley cup(which led us to get a couple of free drinks). It was a great time, i loved it when yzerman turned down hoisting the cup first and differed to his coach, and seeing konstantinov WALK out on the ice to celebrate with his teammates was awesome. (for those not in the know he was the one who after winning the cup a few years ago was involved in a car crash that left him paralyzed)
Of course nothing beat walking from monroe st to woodward to jefferson with our cup as half of metro detroit took turns touching it, kissing it, or hoisting it. Jefferson was a mad house. The DPD was all over the statue of the Spirit but from jefferson to third everyone was lined up on the wall or the hotel going nuts and touching our cup as we jogged by. I have never seen so many random downriverish white folk running in the streets (or sidewalks or what not) and randomly hugging, jumping, and celebrating with random black folk. It was pretty cool. Then we ended up at the joe, where it was a mad house. After a while there, we got in my car and drove down michigan ave which was INSANE around livernois. Everyone was just out waving banners, giving high fives, drinking beer, etc. good stuff.
Anyways, as we were driving home we somehow got on the subject of "just wait till next year" or something like that, where my friend curt pointed out a theory of his. For many, life is nothing but a oftentimes hapless persuit of hopeless optimism. Everybody always seems to have that one unprobable thing that once that happens, everything will be perfect, etc. And amazingly as soon as that one thing becomes impossible to achieve (or at times actually is achieved) we immediately have some other persuit that we focus all of our attention on.
I am a total textbook example of this, as for years I have been saying "once I have my own place and work full time in a field i enjoy I will be truly happy and satisfied". Those interested in the future of Detroit do this a lot too, though sometimes, what they are optimistic about actually happens. Sometimes. We are STILL waiting for mass transit. But the stadiums happened, the bar and club scene downtown is super fun, the casinos- well thats another story.
But my point is several things. For those whose persuits are constantly far-fetched, what would happen to them upon realizing that thier entire lives revolve around hopeless optimism? Would they be crushed to the point of depression, or have more realistic and well thought goals? As for those whose "wait till next year" mentality often results in accomplishing said goals, does immediate replacement with new goals cause one to be very outgoing and proactive, or does such a lifestyle stress one out too much to the point where they never "stop to smell the roses"?
So my question to all'a'yall is, how can you tell whether what you are persuing is hopeless optimism or well thought out goals that lead to positive action? When is the "just wait till next year" mentality positive and when is it negative?

Sorry to disappoint some of ya, but for now to quote monster magnet, "Life is GOOD, a rocket sled utopia, a self imposed myopia. You gotta love this pace." Whatever.
Here is a thought, on my interests, i listed not only giving advice, but recieving it. Apparently people love to give advice but dont like to recieve. Think about THAT. |
