Just watched Dirty Dancing, which is probably along with Pretty Woman the ultimate chick flick, as they say. I want to dance with my baby. I wish she could have come out to the Carnival with me today. The best bits were the sound stages in the streets encompassed by the procession route. A 4 square mile street party is quite something, I just had to be impressed by the scale of it all.

Clem is 24 years old and lives in Kingston with his two housemates and a couple of pictures of the fiancee he wishes to be with some 3,500 miles away. He would like you to buy him a one way ticket to Philadelphia, a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a new MD player to give to Kate...
Strengths: Love, temperance and mental fortitude. Giving away free advice to those who don't need it.
Weaknesses: Tendancy to eat *all* the pies. Scared of height - or lack thereof.
Special Skills: It is a little known fact that he may somewhere be in possession of a sense of humour - but keep it to yourselves, okay? Wouldn't want people to think he was letting the side down...
Weapons: Ability to punch shoulder height into another man's groin. Metaphorically speaking.
Taxi Driver Wisdom: Love is 90% responsibility. Whatever that other 10 percent is, it must be quite something.

I can't believe the little slip of paper that's been sitting on our doormat since early this morning was a propaganda leaflet for the BNP. I want to puke, or worse, punch someone.

My eyes sting like buggery right about now.

Got up this morning, helped C chop down the rest of the hedge from our neighbour's garden, which took until midday. Then we laid down a blanket and loaded my car to the roof and took it to the local dump with R. There's still two more car loads to be done, but I'm fucked if I would do them today, so they'll just have to wait until next week. Then I went swimming, did 1000m (including 500m breaststroke continuous, so I'm improving my stamina) before shopping at Sainsbury's. I wanted to try making that ebi yakitori but it's a little difficult not being able to see... When I got home, I was going to complain about having only eaten a banana all day, but R was running around like a headless chicken because the infamous landlord was round trying to fix a leak from our bathtub shower that R noticed dripping onto the light fitting on the ceiling below. That was the first time I'd met him, and he's not so scary after all, though I can see why the others would get so frustrated when he doesn't listen to your suggestions. (can you see I really like the "quicklink" button on the Semagic client?)

Time:6:20 am.
Mood: pissed off.
Jeez I was feeling depressed last night.

Got home feeling anxious about Kate's interview, and I didn't hear from her until after 10pm.

I spoke to another American agency and the guy said his clients were looking to hire immediately, so it wasn't so much the sponsoring that's the problem but the 6 months it can take to process the visa. He said they're is a big shortage of civil engineers and it just depends on who's desperate enough to hire from abroad, but if they're desperate they're not looking for someone who can't start work for 6 months.

Then I get a phone call from my landlord (thought it was Kate), telling me he'd received a letter from our next door neighbour complaining that the trees in our back garden were too high, and blocking out the sun from her garden. Why she didn't come round and tell us is beyond me, but I'll try to find out tonight - and get a pair of long-handled shears from someone at work. The landlord was quoting the contract which says that we have to maintain the garden (which it does) and when I told C about it he went off on one, as I expected - there's no love lost between him and the landlord. So there's me and R trying to calm him down and say that sending the landlord a long letter of repairs that are his responsibility under the contract isn't the most tactful thing since it would seem like we're getting back at him (which is what C wants to do). Thing is, he will turn round and say it's our fault for not maintaining the property under the contract. He also noticed that I forgot to raise the standing order to the new rent as of 13th August, so I said I would check my statement and pay him the difference. Now I remember why I hate renting.

And R showed me a letter that arrived last week about now they're charging us for residents' parking permits on our road. It's an extra £60 a year, but since the reason I have to park on the street is because I let R park on the driveway, she's agreed to pay some of it. I hope it will mean that I won't have to fight for a parking space when I get home early from work from now on.

Then my lightbulb blew, and took out the fuse, so I'll have to ask someone at work for another one - I only just blew my other lamp a couple of weeks ago.

When I finally heard from Kate, she couldn't talk long because she was running out of minutes on her long distance plan, plus she has to pay roaming on her mobile. She said the interview went well but was tougher than she expected, especially when she was cross-examined by three people from different departments from the one she's applying to, so I don't know what they were looking for. I hope she gets it, because once she's settled we can seriously look at wedding plans, since that's looking more and more like the only way I'll ever get to be with her.

Anyway, I'm going to take my frustration out at the gym now, because otherwise I'll grind my teeth down to buggery.

Dammit - woke up too late to go to the gym again today - I will go tonight...

Kate has her interview at Bryn Mawr today - I hope it all goes well for her. I guess it'll be a little easier to concentrate on what we both want if and when she gets it, but it also cuts down my options on the locations of that job I need. I guess if we get married first, which it's looking more and more like it will, it won't matter too much. Had a conversation last night with another American agency and they said (again) that the market for wastewater engineers is very buoyant. And they didn't automatically blow me out because I'd need sponsorship, so that was encouraging.

Where have I been for the last couple of weeks? Mainly working, drinking and eating (in any order you care to choose). I split my suit trousers, so I spent £200 on new suits at the weekend. Luckily my dad paid for one of them - there goes my birthday present.

I need excitement, motivation and focus. This is going to be an important year, so I can't waste time fannying around. The job hunt was really depressing me, but I've got a goal to apply to one job per day from now on. We'll see how it goes.

Right, time to go to work.

So they arrested the people and found the bodies today...

Why is it celebrity causes put me off what is genuinely a disturbing story? Is it my disenchantment with the way the media decide to pick up certain causes, and yet others which have just as much importance to those affected are left unnoticed.

What happened to Holly and Jessica is horrific, but: cute, white girls. Two of them. Good enough for the Daily Express to put up a £1 million reward, just for information. I don't remember such an offer made regarding Damilola Taylor, do you?

Why is it I have so much trouble keeping promises to myself? There are so many things I want to do and even when I get the time in which to do them, I don't have the motivation. I think I wrote a list not so long ago, but just to remind myself:

  • Apply for jobs off internet job boards

  • Ring HR people to find out contact details of people I can network with

  • Figure out wedding plans

  • Finish reading Tom Robbins' "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates", and start on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "The General in His Labyrinth"

  • Go to the gym/swim/yoga more often, so I get the value out of my £65 a month fee

  • Finish editing all my scanned-in photos so I can put them up on my website

  • Put up my website

  • Finish working through the examples and exercises in the Fluid Mechanics books I borrowed from Kingston Library a year ago, plus going through the Hydraulics sections in the £300 worth of textbooks I bought in the last couple of years

  • Start working on building up my water/wastewater treatment knowledge from said books

  • Go and visit my friends in this country and abroad

I thought that giving myself deadlines would help, but I just keep putting them back.

I know I need to do all these things - I feel like I need a break just to get me focussed, but there should be a lot going on at work at the moment too. I feel if I get up early I should go into work rather than do any of the above.
