right, off to the doctor subjects to discuss are: flu jab thyroid test (well, technically Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test) weight issues heavy painful periods and the possibility of Depo Provera.
I don't trust doctors much - bad experiences in the past.

great calling last night! Met some new people, who were all nice. They included a random South African guy called Alex (tall, dark and not half bad, if a little straight-looking), who started telling me about his burgeoning interest in the fetish scene, then came over all coy and said "I've only just met you, I shouldn't be telling you stuff like this!"; a scandi-merican called Christian who worked on computer games like The Sims and is over here doing work on educational online games for the National Curriculum; and a French guy called Jais, who I didn't really talk to for long, but who was happy to be in a place with a goth scene (apparently Avignon hasn't much of one). I got very drunk. They should have Scrumpy Jack on three for a fiver more often. Or maybe not. Ugh, my head! I can't even just go and sleep it off, as I have to be awake for the NTL guy coming over to replace the digibox. Helpfully, they gave their slot as 'between 8 and 1', which means I've been conscious since before 9, and trying not to doze off since. I wish they'd show up so I can go back to bed. rar, bloody NTL called up NTL to report the fault in the digibox. Unfortunately, though they know from my description of the problem that it needs an engineer to come out, they can't send one because I'm not the account holder. zotz needs to call them before they can do anything. The helpline guy concurred with my assessment that 'PACE boxes are awful and keep crashing all the time'. Current Mood: apathetic | 1:47 pm |
oversleeping bad Woke up at 10.30am, thought, "oh, great, I'll get up in a few and get some stuff done". Woke up again at 1pm going, "oh, shit!". It's now doubtful I'll make it into town, but there's still some stuff I can get done, so it's no a total loss. wechsler, I'll pick up those CDs tomorrow. Not sure how I'm going to juggle time and clothing tomorrow because there's a party to go to before The Calling, but I want to be doing professional-sorta-stuff during the day. Room to let! (also posted to commune and rs-chat. come on, somebody must want a new place to live!) We're looking for a new housemate! Who the hell are you, anyway? The current occupants are myself and Graham Clark. I'm a career temp who's in and out of the house a lot; Graham's a finisher on the Human Genome Project who runs The Calling, Cambridge's premiere goth club. We're not neat-freaks, and we don't mind loud music too much as long as nobody's trying to sleep. So what's it like, then? Decent-sized room in South Cambridge house, near Addenbrookes. The house has been recently extended, and has a well-equipped kitchen and large living room with full range of consumer electronics, digital TV and internet access. This house has been home to generations of Cambridge Rocksoc and camgoth members. What sort of person are you looking for? We'd like someone who can pay the rent, and preferably someone who likes (or at least tolerates) goth, indutrial, indie and rock music. Male or female, we don't mind. If you're interested, drop me a line at the usual address (or here on LJ), and we'll sort out a time for you to come over and have a look at the place. Current Mood: hopeful | 6:36 pm |
yawn quietish day. Did some housework and pottered around. Started reading A History of God by Karen Anderson - some interesting material. Was fairly virtuous on the food front - soup for lunch and a Thai hot-and-sour chicken and vegetable stirfry for dinner, with a huge mound of fluffy fragant rice. Tomorrow looks busy. Phone NTL about the broken digibox, make a doctor's appointment, drop off some stuff at wechsler's and pick up the Rome Burns CDs I left there (doh!), and possibly if I have time go into Blue Arrow and spend some time in their training room brushing up my Powerpoint skills. Will probably call in at some other agencies too to see if there's any work for me. It's shaping up to be a low human contact week. Looking forward to the Calling. hmmm very bored and lonely. My back and neck are starting to hurt from sitting at the computer, and the TV is still on the fritz. I've made yet more soup (lentil, vegetable and beer, this time), and I can't think of any books I want to read that I've not read already. I hate this - I feel so apathetic and listless. Valkyrie's Travels, with busking review and a handy recipe Left wechsler's place at about noon and wandered into town to get cash out and do a few bits of shopping. City centre was hectic and full of buskers - I was most impressed by the tight-rope walking fiddler (actually it was a slack-rope, he had it tied between two trees on Christ's Pieces and was bouncing gently up and down on it standing on one leg while playing really quite pleasant Irish folk tunes), though the 5 year old kid churning out rock n roll classic on an electric guitar was pretty cool too, if slightly disturbing. On the corner of Market Square and Petty Cury, The Last Surviving Maurice Chevalier Impersonator was there again, tippy-tapping away in his straw boater and waistcoat. Headed home to find lovely flowers, and chatted to strangerover on IRC for a little while before making carrot and coriander soup using 3/4 of a kilo of carrots!. Guess what I'll be eating for the rest of the weekend? I'm now washing up the house supply of Tupperware to decant the soup into, and trying to resist the urge to make yet more soup. I'm torn between spicy lentil and carrot, or curried parsnip. I love making soup - big thanks to grahamb for giving me a food processor for my birthday back in May. It's seeing good use. Recipe for Carrot and Coriander Soup (to serve 4 fairly hungry people) ( Read more... ) Current Mood: cheerful | 5:30 pm |
Hmmmm Our NTL digibox appears to be fucked - it's just displaying 'Err3' and won't reboot even when unplugged and plugged in again. Bloody thing - don't know what to do about it. No point calling an NTL engineer today, they won't get anyone out til Monday at least. Current Mood: annoyed | 3:08 pm |
Oh wow! Just got home to find a beautiful bunch of red roses waiting for me. Thank you ciphergoth! I'm feeling all giggly and happy now! Current Mood: romantic | Friday, November 8th, 2002 | 3:44 pm |
how to look like you're working put a telephone headset on, and try to look like you're listening to something very carefully.
I'm not workshy, you understand, just very bored today. Right now I'm pretending I'm checking the voicemail. The mailbox has been empty all day, though. | 3:20 pm |
Awwww! Kitties! One of my workmates has just been showing me a page he edits called 'Pick of the Pets', which runs in the Cambridge Weekly News every two weeks. They're doing a special feature on cats that need rehoming. Such pretty kittens! My favourite is Candy, a pretty little white and tortoiseshell. Though I rather liked Mohawk 'a fiercely independent cat who cannot always be trusted'; I had visions of this black and white fluff-monster smuggling out the family silver concealed in his fur. I'm all kitten-gooey now.

Heil Jesus? current buzz here in the newspaper office is about a local church which has a German clergyman. Obviously, with Remembrance Day coming up, we've had a sudden flurry of letters saying 'this is terrible, it will bring back bad memories for the servicemen, he can't possibly conduct the service, scandalous, blah blah blah, Yours in twisted-knickers, Outraged of St Neots'. All of which leaves me wondering just what Remembrance Day is all about. Is it only about looking back at the past and reliving past glories, or digging up old grievances to keep the Union Jack a-fluttering? Shouldn't it be about forgiving the mistakes of the past, learning from them, and looking towards a more peaceful future free of this sort of bigotry and jingoism? Current Mood: pensive | 11:17 am |

steadily improving feeling much much better today, cough almost gone (I'm still swigging Covonia to be on the safe side), and not too snuffly. I'm probably not infectious now, so if anyone wants to see me, let me know.
Spent the last hour playing with Quark Express. Despite being warned by the dithery old woman that it was 'a bit difficult', I found it remarkably intuitive and easy to use. OK, I wasn't doing anything terribly complex, but its definitely made me want to learn more publishing stuff.

grumph feeling rather mopey and in need of cuddles, but I know I can't see anyone in case I infect them. So I'll go home and watch shite TV and read LJ and be miserable and alone. And tomorrow I'll be all well. Garlic and chilli in quantity does wonders for a cold, btw. And as zotz pointed out last night "if it doesn't work, at least you'll have had lots of garlic and chilli! It's a no-lose situation!" | 1:18 pm |
more sickly stuff I'm gradually feeling better, but still coughing yeuch off my chest from time to time. I'm doing my best to think of this as a good thing. I have a bottle of my favourite cough medicine from which I'm swigging deeply (Do not exceed the stated dose, my arse! the worst that can happen is that I'll get a very slightly buzz off the low achohol content, since it's the non-drowsy stuff). On the way back from the supermarket I saw a rat run across the path in front of me. This does not inspire faith in the supermarket's standards of cleanliness. Current Mood: blah | 10:53 am |
stupid comment on the radio this morning "shoplifting is for kids" | 7:51 am |
ugh well, awake now, and probably going to push off to work in a few. I still feel pretty shit, and my throat feels like its been sandpapered (I nearly typed 'sandpipered', which would be odd - small shore birds flying in and out), but I'll probably live.
