Upon arriving at a space station orbiting the ocean planet Solaris, a psychologist (Clooney) discovers that the commander of an expedition to the planet has died mysteriously. Strange events follow.Despite a fine dramatic performance from Clooney and some perfectly modulated direction from Soderbergh, Solaris is pretty much the cinematic equivalent of tryptophan, an oblique art-house film made on a studio-blockbuster budget that will either leave you sleepy or perplexed, and only mildly intrigued. Perhaps if McElhone had been more magnetic, the romance would be more heartfelt. As it is, it feels like warmed-over Kubrick. - Mark Englehart

To stay out of jail, a 33-year old party animal spends the holiday performing community service as the assistant referee for a youth basketball league. Crazy Nights, which very likely will be the worst movie debuting in 2002, makes Little Nicky seem positively sublime. You thought Sandler's voice was grating in that film? His vocal work for Whitey, a club-footed basketball ref, could be used to roust suicidal cult members from a compound. Happy Madison, the production company here, could be attempting to weaponize this film as I write. - Keith Simanton

After witnessing a horrific event, a graduate student (Regan) begins to realize that her childhood nightmares might have been real.Despite the lame name (imagine the grammatical atrocities: "They is heee-eeere..."), this one's got an interesting premise. Still, without any kind of star power, it might be a tough sell.

In 1931 Australia, three Aboriginal girls, trained by the government to be servants for a white family, escape their captors and begin the long journey home across the Outback, following the rabbit-proof fence. Noyce has two releases this fall, with this drama and the long-delayed The Quiet American, both of which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. With its powerful content, Miramax is making sure not to position this as a kids' movie despite the three young leads. Peter Gabriel contributed the score.

A film crew travels to the Austrian Alps near the (former) Yugoslav border to film a commercial featuring three extreme sports enthusiasts being chased down by an avalanche. Turns out they're filming near the secret hideout of a Serbian war criminal, who they accidentally capture on film.Somebody at Paramount should get the Bonehead-Of-The-Year award for scheduling an action-y, XXX-like feature up against James Bond. 007 might be showing a little age, but we bet he takes down these youngsters before his first martini is shaken.

Young Mr. Potter returns to Hogwarts, only to find the school plagued by a series of mysterious attacks and dark forces haunting him. In many regards Chamber is a better film than Sorcerer's Stone (a fine fantasy in its own right), mainly because it's a much more cinematic story and Columbus takes advantage of it. It's not as burdened with exposition or the importance of each realization of Rowling's text (we've seen Hogwarts so we don't have to linger on it in awe, the director allows us to swoop). Scenes such as the flying Ford Anglia, the Whomping Willow attacking the car, the mandrakes, all rather inert in the book, spring to life. At the same time, since the tale is barely adapted, it carries with it the more annoying traits of the book, particularly the newly-added characters (I realize it's a running joke, but how reliable is Dumbledore's faculty selection system at Hogwart's anyway?). The scenes with Harris are poignant to the point of being painful. Bring on Azkaban. - Keith Simanton

007 travels to Korea, Hong Kong, Cuba, London, and Iceland to unmask a traitor and prevent a war of catastrophic consequence. Beautiful women (Berry, Pike) play vital roles in his quest.Hurrah! The first 40 minutes of Die Another Day, which is essentially a 20 film homage, rivals and reinvents the excitement, intrigue and wit of the early, classic Connery Bond films. It's so good I nearly died. Sob! There's another hour and 20 minutes to go and the movie attempts to turn him into a super-hero, not a super spy. Another Day goes on to rival--nay exceed--the worst of the Moore years. My suggestion is leave the theater almost immediately when they get to Iceland; you'll get more than your money's worth. One last thing: If Halle Berry really is going to make a franchise out of Jinx, I hope she'll learn to run with her mouth closed. - Keith Simanton

The world's newest Santa Claus (Allen), eight years on the job, discovers if he doesn't marry by Christmas Eve, he'll stop being Santa forever. And on top of that, his son (Breslin) has landed on this year's naughty list. Oy!Clause 2 has a lot in common with Stuart Little 2; it's a better film on the whole than the first installment, and yet retains the same mild temperament. For all the slack time, there are two moments in particular that almost elevate the film above what one expects, one with a little girl who recognizes Santa even though he's in the guise of a thin, normal-looking Allen, and one where a group of adults receive gifts they always wanted as children. Allen fills in admirably as both the nice Santa and, even better, as an evil toy Santa who wants to give children coal. - Keith Simanton

When their apartment is robbed on Christmas Eve, two mall security guards (Cube and Epps) from the 'hood team up to track down the burglar. This is the kind of film you want to see in a packed theater, with cell phones ringing and people screaming, "Girrrl, Ice Cube is fiiiiine!" Such cacophony directly reflects what's happening on-screen, as this Friday is loud, hysterical, and set to irritate sensitive eyes and ears. And Cube continues to show he's as wise as he is cuddly; he's created a profitable franchise based on a clutch of bodacious, everyday folk who enter to applause like well-loved sitcom characters. So bring on Two Weeks from Friday... or whatever the next installment will be called. - Arno Kazarian

A young rapper (Eminem) in Detroit struggles with his anger through music. For someone who made his mark by being unconventional, it's surprising how very conventional Eminem's debut is. Though the film is essentially an Andy Hardy movie with axel grease smeared all over it ("Let's put on a show mutha$*#@?!") and director Hanson grafts the searing vibrancy of great youth angst movies onto it ("Rebel With a Fear of Speaking Before Large Audiences") he never lets the film flag. Eminem proves he can act and though I'm dreading the thought of watching him chase down the creep that killed his partner in some future production he'll probably be quite good at it. - Keith Simanton

A remake of the Japanese hit film Ringu, in which a reporter (Watts) tries to figure out why everyone who watches a mysterious videotape ends up dead.Verbinski's measured approach to horror has to be savored. This tactic may seem random, or lazy, or mistaken, but it's not. It's insidious. His Ring digs into your skin, burrowing in just under the surface, and feverishly begins to lay eggs. This film won't keep you awake at night, but it will make you itch. - Keith Simanton
