The winners for this year's Oscar Pool are:
sinangel & homefry2727
Both picked 5 correct but didn't get either of the tiebreakers correct. They will be receiving one lolli-pop of their choosing (within reason). Thanks for playing!
An email will also be going out to folks to let them know who won. And if I get the time I'll put together a script so you can find out how many you got right. Drop a comment and I'll let you know how many you got right.

figured someone might find these images I created from NASA's Rapidfire site interesting. Dark smudges are smoke plumes. Red boxes denote areas of fire (hence rapidFIRE). Resolution is 250 meters.

last night was... interesting. it was nice to get out and be social and see people who i've read about here on lj. lots of people watching. the drag show was a trip. i'm amazed at the creativity these "girls" show. their acts must take a bit of work to come up with. best moment of the night? while i was partially screened from it i thought it was hilarious that they got a guy to do a little strip tease. got home about 2.30 and promptly snoozed only to have a strange dream where i couldn't stop burping. so i wake up from said dream and i feel these need to burp but i can't. it's been really annoying because i still have this... little bubble in my throat or something that just won't come out. kind of uncomfortable actually. well, now i'm going to go home, read for a bit with the doors open, and drive down to see c and her friends near seneca rocks. it's going to be a really f'ing cold night for camping but at least i'm trying to spend time with her.
aren't you glad you read this? :-)

this struck me as funny.... |
[08 Mar 2003|11:42am] |
this appeared in a thread on BigSoccer.com. The thread was originally a troll so people started posting random stuff. This was one of the ongoing conversations:User: Betamax [b] For anyone in Houston, I went to a great deli today on the corner of 19th and Yale. I had a wonderful reuben and clam chowder.
User: Pookspor [p] one time, my pal, farb, had a reuben. but it didn't agree with him, and he filled his pants before he could get his winnebego to the next exit. i don't think he got it in houston, though.
User: Crewcrazy [c] If he was in a winnebego why did he need to get to the next exit? Couldn't he have just pulled over? Or does he get some sort of satifaction out of "filling his pants"?
p this is an excellent question. in retrospect, i seem to have mistold the story. what actually happened was not that he was desperate to reach a restroom; but that he was betrayed by his bowels while intending to merely flatulate. all i can say with certainty was that he laid the blame squarely on the reuben. but, again, i repeat - the reuben was NOT purchased in houston.

So here I am, at 8 pm on a Friday night, sitting in the glow of my computer reading a scrolling text update gizmo. It's giving me a blow-by-blow account of the US vs. El Salvador game. Been a tough game for most of the first half. But in stoppage time this little snippet popped up: Gonzalez [US middie] gets the ball on the left side, lays it off to Gaven - he's taken down - PENALTY! Gonzalez to take it While you wait for the ticker to go by all i can envision is a 16 year-old hispanic kid in a white jersey lining up for the shot, it's late afternoon in Guatemala, kinda hot and sticky, people cheering... looks at the keeper and...Goal! Gonzalez converts for his team-leading 10th international goal, coming in his 26th appearence. It's kind of cool having to fill in the blanks like that. :-) US is up 1-0 after the first half. If the US wins today and Jamaica wins or ties against Guatemala then the US is through to the U-17 World Cup this summer in Finland.
I'm such a soccer geek :-)
New Site for Dave I finally bit the bullet and got a domain. It's usablecode.com. Got my old portfolio up there and I'll spend time tomorrow morning getting all of my DB stuff working. Oscar Pool will be moved there as well and I'll let everyone know the new URL.
Nice night here... time to catch the rest of the game and head over to Jeph's for some video games, drinking, and drag queens.
night all.
--- edit ---
forgot to share the link to the goals from the last game. I've had trouble playing 'em but the last one (Adu) is really amazing. Remember, he's a 13 year-old playing against 17 year-olds.
--- edit @ 8.54 pm ---
US ties El Salvador 1-1. I'm very pissed now. US has to beat Guatemala in Guatemala to have a chance to go to the U-17 World Cup. Obviously it's a game but you always hope your team wins. Be happier in a bit after a couple of woodchucks.

US defeats Jamaica 3 - 0 with a stoppage time goal by Adu. Description of said goal: Marfuggi (US goalkeeper) saves a free kick and feeds a long outlet pass to Adu. Adu is alone on the keeper. He dribbles wide around the keeper, cuts back into the box and past 3 defenders, and calmly slots the ball into the net from 6 yards out. If I find this online anywhere i'll make sure to share the link.
the other goal scorers were Ashe and DaiRaimondo. good day for US soccer. They just have to win their next game and they should be through to the U-17 World Cup in Finland this summer.
i'm so stoked man... :-p

Because I have to move to a new host I'm going to get a real domain name for myself. Unfortunately I'm having a mental block when it comes to new names. The front runner at the moment is codeimp.com (codemonkey & codewhore.com were already taken). So is codeimp stupid or cool? Any suggestions for a domain name? I want one that's related to web development but not tied to a specific technology. I've also though about olsenfc.com so that my family could use it as well since their are 150 pop email addys at ipowerweb.com.
Three hours 'til kick-off :-)
--- edit @ 4.30 ---
leading candidate right now is usablecode.com. it sounds very professional and still in the general tech area.

i want random, cute girls to add me as a "friend" in lj. stroke my ego a little. not that this whining plea is going to help that little dream become reality :-)
so today is the start of the CONCACAF U-17 World Cup Qualifying tournament. Basically that means that selected teams comprised of players younger than 17 from North and Central America and the Carribbean are playing each other to make it into their age bracket's World Cup. The US plays tonight against Jamaica at 7 PM EST. You can catch the game on Matchtracker. The big thing about this game is that the 13-year old Freddy Adu will be making his US debut. Apparently he's going to be the next Pele. Two recent Sports Illustrated articles on him: here and here.

It's been a really busy day and a half. I had to update the WVU Commencement web site yesterday which took freakin' forever. I dislike having to go back and edit things that should have been copy edited originally. But at least I told them that we can't have many edits and they backed off (them = special events). I did the design on the site though, per usual, i'm not happy with it. I don't like the nav on the bottom but for some reason we've gone with it. It's also a little blue but hey. In retrospect I think I've shared the "porcelain" (not to be confused with "potty") design before.
I also had to show off the new design for Parents Club (it's just a big graphic so don't try to click anything). The contact person really liked it. Now I just have to go through and finish the site by March 22nd. A tad cramped but it's what they wanted.
So all bow before my mad design skillz. :-p
Weekend Update Where you get crazy news snippets and interesting monologues... oh wait, that's SNL... which I haven't watched in forever. C went away so I was left to my own devices. Spent some time (very little) working on phpLJ. I figured being at work would make it easier to program but it just turned out that I just surfed the entire day. But wvjeph called me up and invited me to lunch with him and adisaster. We had a nice time talking and it was cool to finally put a face with a name. I eventually went over to jeph's that evening, met rgreiner, ate dinner (jeph makes a mean meatloaf), learned/played phase 10, and watched the worst movie ever (and i picked it out). about the only redeeming feature was elizabeth hurley who is absolutely gorgeous. sunday was spent doing a little more work on phpLJ. got the create journal bit fixed and i started editing all of the input forms so they looked similar.
Without a home... Sometime this month my free host is going away. I really shouldn't have mooched as long as I did. It's really supposed to be for people who share with one another. While I did offer code and answer questions from time-to-time I didn't really do enough to warrant the account. So now I have to find a new home for my site. Jeph showed me iPowerWeb which seems to have a great deal ($7.95 per month, PHP, MySQL, 400 MB, 30 GB transfer, free domain registration) but it almost seems too good to be true. I spent a bit of time researching them and haven't found anything horrible. Some of the "anonymous" reviews I read were bad and some were great but i assume that's just hosting company pr groups fighting it out.
Other than that... Nothing else major is happening. Just want to get through the week. But I have to find something interesting to do with the weekend. Hopefully with the nice weather c and i can hike or camp or something. we just have to do something active.

i always regret eating at pugs... but i love their calzones so. their's always too much food. but at least i have leftovers for this weekend so i won't have to cook. god, i'm being so lazy.
so what's happened? nothing much today. i didn't really get into the office for an extended time until this afternoon... and now it's like "hell, it's friday, 'bout time to end the week". argh.
my presentation for the Computing and Technology Symposium at WVU has been accepted. My talk is entitled, "Introduction to PHP & MySQL". gonna be a cracker. not sure how i will organize it but i have 50 minutes to fill. i think i can fill that easily because it's such a broad topic(s). i'm not a huge fan of giving talks but i think it'll help advertise Web Services so it's worth it.
( my inability to talk )
other things in my life? i am predicting that next year at this time... or maybe next december... i will be feeling mucho anxiety as i wait to find out if my position is cut or not. it's gonna suck so hard if it does happen because their are no other jobs here in WV and i'll be back trying to find another job out-of-state which is really, really difficult. and c wants a house and i can't imagine buying one with that over my head... and to top it off she'll be in the middle of school.
and how do i know this? because this year we have a 3.4% budget cut and one position has been cut from our group to make up the difference. next year we have, most likely, a 10% budget cut. and next year will be jeph's last year so they'll need the graphic designer money they saved this year to fill his slot... so i'm the odd man out... and even then they'll need to pare back even more money. slightly depressing.
tay, enough of that depressing stuff. i should cheer up and all that :-)

From an article entitled:
FBI: Pornography linked to sex crimes Criminals may choose to act out desires sparked by porn
comes this gem:
"I have been on the force for five and half years, and every time I have gone to serve a search warrant for dope, I have found porn," Gittine said.
porn, the starter drug.
fine print: please note that the article is from BYU's student newspaper and that the first line reads: "FBI officials say that pornography does not cause sex crimes."

You can find a higher-res version without the type here. EO has had some really good images lately. They have the smoke plume from the refinery fire and a cool image of Christchurch, NZ.
phpLJ update One of the guys at Systems has taken a look at it and he found one big problem with the account set-up process. I don't think anyone here would have a problem since it's exactly like LiveJournal but I want to fix that before doing anything else. And I don't think it's going to go live at WVU because they want (need?) a simple solution and this isn't exactly simple. I'm still gonna try to clean it up. It's been interesting watching people play with it.
Life Update Nothing major has happened in my life except for that project. I did get out on Friday to meet some of c's friends. Nice people all around and, I hope, I fit in fairly well. It was bowling and drinking. Odd combination for me. Hope to start working out a little harder because I've been dogging it all month. I really need to get back to ellipticals and the bike. I'm not pushing myself hard enough on the track.
I resolve... ...to be more pro-active. i was described as passive the other day which i agreed with at the time. then i thought about it and it really irked me because i started to think it meant i was accepting and/or easily run over. so i'm going to make more decisions and not wait around for consensus. take today for example, everyone at our table at lunch hemmed and hawed over the bill and mentioned "it'd be nice to split the bill" so they go back to diddling with it (passing it around and pulling out check cards and looking plaintive) so I get up and ask the waiter for separate checks. he goes and does it... takes a couple of minutes... everyone is still piddling... they're shocked when he brings out separate checks. i want to do that more often.
---
on preview: the sentence, "i was described...", sounds funny to my in the context of that paragraph. i don't think i was being passive at the time :-)

i have been banging my head against a wall for about 45 minutes. i think it's time to go home and get some sleep. i just wish the rewrite rule would work. if it did than my alpha-version of phpLJ would be complete... as it is some parts of the site are now broken. I'm not sure what's wrong but something major is.

|
just an update on phpLJ |
[21 Feb 2003|04:08pm] |
I really hope to have an alpha version of phpLJ up on Monday morning. At the moment it looks like I can pull it off. It's only going to have one theme set and one color choice but that's enough for people to get an idea of how it'll work.
I spent a bit this afternoon checking out some of the "extra" features that paid LJ users can use. Two cool ones:
I had already planned on a similar syndication feature for v1.5 of phpLJ though I don't think I'd stick it in the "friends" category. Friends just gets too cluttered though it's nice to be able to quickly scroll through. The mood chart is really neat and it'd be cool to have a line graph as well but it'd be hard to give numerical values to some of the moods. For example, is drunk good or bad?
But I got most of the post/read comments done. One little bug related to thread position that I have to fix but that should be it. Then Update Journal, update userpics, and apply my phpLJ design to all of the admin pages. Doesn't seem like much :-)
So fingers crossed for a release next week that people can play with (and break).

I haven't posted in a while due to the snow. Haven't even had a chance to go back through and comment on entries. I guess I'll try to go for a quick, bullet style.
- my mother-in-law and sister-in-law got snowed in here. It was nice for my wife to be able to see 'em but it just got nerve-wracking trying to be on good behavior for that long of a time.
- snow removal is a pain in the ass. i've learned two valuable lessons: 1) small amounts per shovel at a time, don't be He-Man and 2) get out in the storm and shovel up multiple times instead of one big load after the storm is finished. and get one of these to clear your driveway: earthmover. we actually had one of those come through our townhouse community. very cool.
- snow total at the olsen homestead was 18-20 inches. the snow drift against the back patio doors was 27 inches. it was very cool to see the bedding of the snow drift. hopefully this stuff melts in the next few days.
- movie reviews: 6 for my big, fat, greek wedding (which will be a stupid tv show), 7 for scorpion king and 8.5 for blade 2 (great, comic book style fight scenes). i didn't watch any of the other movies c rented for the in-laws (sweet home alabama, jurassic park 3, others, bone collector). i love, er, <3 reece.
- c's reaction to the v-day gifts was amused.
- it's a very nice feeling to be able to walk quickly up a hill and not feel like you're going to keel over at the end of it.
- potato chips and onion dip is goooood
- my haxor name is: b1g pl@gue... or something like that
Wife Update C got accepted to Fairmont State for Nursing School late last week. On Friday the doc said that she might only have a partial tear of her ACL. Apparently she's recovered too quickly to have had a full tear. And she'll have a steady temp job for a bit starting tomorrow. So it's good news all around :-)
phpLJ Update Ya think with the nice break we had that I'd really get a lot done on the script. Unfortunately it was a lot of stops and starts. I basically finished the view journal bit (where you can see your own entries and those of your friends). The only problem is that I haven't quite figured out how the journal security will work. At the moment if you set your journal security to "no one" then only you can view your entries even if you've set some entries to "everyone". I guess that's the way it should stay but it just seems like a hassle. Next on the sched is post and read comments. Threading is gonna be a biatch. And the due date for a demo is next Monday. At the very least I'm going to mention it as a possible solution but I want to be able to give out a URL other than livejournal.com.
