So I thought this was worth writing about, probably mostly for Julia but also the sort of irony of the whole thing is kind of funny...

So I'm taking a class called "Structures of Meat Animals and Poultry" as one of my animal science courses for vet school. It's extremely useful stuff but of course is heavily centered around the $$$ factor of agricultural animals, since my school is the farming school and all.
It says in the outline that slaughtering USED to be a practical activity that everyone would have had to do.
Keyword: USED
Anyway, in my lab today we had to watch a video on the slaughter of a cow. This part I knew.
Then the T/A was like "Ok, grab your notebooks and let's go"
Where did we go you ask??
The abattoir of course.
Read: "slaughterhouse" (This is all on-campus mind you. What other school would have a slaughterhouse on campus but Guelph?!)
The cow was stunned with a bullet to the forehead, drained of all its blood by slitting its throat, skinned and had all its intestines removed.
All of this was 10 feet in front of me.
It even mooed on its way into the room.
Good Lord.
And if that's not bad enough: The men that do these jobs do not wear gloves and the cows are dirty and poopy. Just a warning for those of you who eat it.
It was quite a day.

Something to keep in mind: By the end of this course I will be the girl to ask about what kind of cut of meat you should buy for how much $$ and how long you should cook it for maximum enjoyment.
Bleh.

Limited sleeping is available at Hotel Birmingham, although not that limited considering how many couches we have.
I haven't totally decided where we are going yet but it will probably be several places (ie Boo Radley's etc.) so if you don't like clubbing you'll have to (a)suck it up or (b)you aren't invited.
Keep in mind; the Ranch has not been eliminated from this list of possibilities.
Drew's coming out with us so I'm excited about that too.

Julia- there is a really great series of seminars and lectures on Animal Welfare the same Saturday at the Vet College (OVC). It's $10 to go and there are a whackload of guest speakers and topics. I really want to go and thought you might like to come here on the Friday and we could go together? We can pick and choose which ones we want to hear. If you're interested, let me know and I'll post topics. It should be good though.

I'll be back in Waterloo for Liam's show next week and since everyone better be there I'll see the rest of you (those I'm not seeing tomorrow) then.

So I'm a happy girl because I just got back from the meeting the kitty that I'm cat-sitting this weekend. The house is amazing. AMAZING!

Scary thing at work today...
The male baby sheep will come over to me now, which is pretty huge since he won't come to anyone else and when we got them they would bolt if we got within 6 feet of them.
Anyway I was letting him eat out of my hands and cuddle with me when he started coughing and shaking his head. He sorta backed away from me and kept coughing. Then started puking and foaming at the mouth. Poor thing.
We called my boss on the two-way radio thingy and then I had to grab the baby to look in his mouth and try to pull out whatever he was choking on. Couldn't find anything to pull out though. So he hurled a little more and then was okay.
Then he decided he was happy and hungry again so came over and gave me a big goopy kiss on the cheek.
I love my babies.

Only two baby bunnies died today. This isn't bad considering yesterday: three dead baby emus, two dead bunnies.
Oh, but don't worry everyone... we got three new baby emus today so they can die too!
