Cool thing: It looks like I might be writing a couple articles for the Communiqué after Christmas. That's the national newspaper for the National Association of School Psychologists which gets sent out to every member of the organization (being just about everyone in the field). Super sweet!

Experience!
12:49pm 10/23/2003
Tomorrow I'm going to get my first experience performing structured therapy with someone. It should be interesting, and hopefully I won't come off as a total fool :)
I think that this first session should be pretty straight-forward, though, so I don't think that I'm in too much danger.

Oy, and I have to finish preparing an hour-long presentation about suicide for tomorrow. I'm hoping for lots and lots of class participation because I am so not going to talk for an hour straight.

Wow
03:06pm 10/08/2003
I'm surprised that people actually still have me listed as a friend, despite my crazy-ass lack of posting in recent times. For that, I love you all! (unless you just didn't notice my silence, in which case I simply feel no ill will toward you)

Anyway, in my latest news, I bought a new car last weekend. It's a Honda Civic, just like my old one, only with fewer doors, blacker paint, a stronger engine, and 130000 fewer miles. And the funny thing is, I'm not even sure yet if I can afford it! But I'll try not to obsess over silly things like that...

  John Ritter, too?

That doesn't affect me as much, but it still sucks. Too young, he was.

Recap
09:06am 08/28/2003
So in the past couple days, I've bought a bike, I've acquired an air freshener that makes my apartment reek of Fruity Pebbles, and I've seen a man in a Santa Claus suit riding a moter scooter during one of the hottest days of the summer.

Well gosh darn it, I think it's been a hell of a week.

Year #3
10:40am 08/25/2003

music: Radio Paradise
So the first semester of my third year of graduate school began last week. I have a good feeling about it. Of course I tend to have a good feeling about every semester, right before it turns into absolute hell. But hey, maybe this one will be different. It's already quite different on the surface (although not really in a good way), with 7 of our original 11 gone on internship. It's kind of depressing to think that when they're all done with school, working, and living in the luxury of 5-figure incomes, I'll still be sitting here reading research articles and wondering if I'll ever get my dissertation done.

But I digress. The beginning of a school year should be a happy time, filled with new beginnings and attainable goals. I do believe that this will have to be my coming-out year, where I finally begin to reveal what I'm really capable of. Or something like that.

Okay, so I need happy thoughts.

YAY! Happy thoughts! Happy happy joy! I LOVE GRADUATE SCHOOL! WOOO!!!

Fun in Ireland
04:20pm 07/20/2003

mood: cheerful
This is gonna be a short one, but I just thought that it would be neat to post to my journal from overseas. Yes, I'm in Ireland right now! An internet cafe in Killarney, to be exact. I still have about a week left, but I'll write all about it when get back to the states :)

Weather, etc.
12:23pm 07/10/2003
Wow, last night was a hell of a weather show for central Illinois. Thunderstorm after thunderstorm passed right over us, and I heard one report that the wind topped off at 100 mph at some places. Trees were downed, streets were flooded, power was out, railroad gates were shorted out by the rivers forming on the tracks, and chaos pretty much ensued.

I was at Susan's place while all this was happening, and my mom suggested that I "better just stay there tonight, to be safe." Well, gee mom, I normally wouldn't even think of doing that, but if you insist, I guess that I will. I'll be sure to sleep on the couch, though! Ahhh, maybe she's just in happy denial of the fact that I'm basically paying rent at my place to store stuff.

Anyway, all's well here now, and if I had windows in my office, maybe I'd see that the clouds are finally letting the sun through. But I guess I can pretend that the rows of fluorescent lights are actually skylights. Maybe I'll venture outside later for lunch or something. And to pick up the international power adapters that I ordered from Apple for my journey to the land of Eire. No, I will not be able to survive the trip without being able to recharge my iPod.

More TV fun
12:35am 07/05/2003
Seeing that South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was playing on Comedy Central tonight, I was intrigued, given that it has lots of potty-mouth language and the censoring would have to be hilarious.

And yeah, I think that they must have recently killed their censors. This had to have been the first time that "donkey-raping shit-eater" and "you're a boner-biting fat-ass, uncle-fucker" were broadcast on network television.

How the hell did they get this through without any type of censoring? They must use some variation of "fuck" at least a hundred times!

That's not right. That's not right at all.
01:24am 07/04/2003
I just saw boobs on the History Channel! They're really hitting a low there. First, a show dedicated to Hugh Hefner and the Playboy mansion, then a show about high-tech sex. Meh.

What next, soft porn on the Weather Channel?

Illegal activities

I'm currently ripping one of my Eric Clapton CDs to AAC, and iTunes is displaying Importing "Cocaine". I just got a kick out of that...and I hope that it's the good stuff.

A school psych faculty member discovered my website and just signed the guestbook. Aaaccckkk! I mean, I guess that I should have assumed it inevitable, but it's somewhat disconcerting to think that my professors might be reading the stuff that I put on there. Now I'm going to have to watch what I say (not that I ever dared to share any especially scandalous information in that unprotected forum).

Research
12:36pm 04/15/2003
Well, I finally got the IRB proposal in for my apprenticeship project. I really hope that I can get approval by their last meeting in May so that I can collect data over the summer. It'll be doubly hard to get the approval too, since I'm going to be working with (1) children and (2) children with autism.

I'm pretty optimistic about the results, although I'm delving into a topic that has seen virtually no research. The tentative title is "Autism and receptive language: the role of sound complexity in comprehension." Basically, I'm looking at how the complexity of the sounds themselves, rather than the components of auditory information, affect understanding.

Anyone want to help with data collection? :)
