Selling Books Online
09:05am 28/08/2003
I've listed books on eBay before and never had great success, even if they were in brand new pristine condition. However... I wanted to share that I listed several books on Amazon.com marketplace this last week, and usually within half an hour after listing a book, I've gotten a sale! Granted, Amazon only sends you the payments to your account every 14 days, but at least I'm selling stuff!

Just thought I'd share.

I just received an email from the school district in MN where I applied for a job - with a virus attachement. I emailed the lady back and told her she has a worm virus and need to have their IS department scan and clean her system. I told her to contact me if she had any questions or needed help.

Shit, yeah, I've been in customer service that long...

*lol*

Jim was bitten by a brown recluse spider? Or, at least he's pretty sure that's what it was. It was on Monday night while he was sleeping. The first day his neck swelled up, and he couldn't turn his head. He was taking 1200 mg of Ibuprofen every four hours, just to be able to turn his head. Yesterday he fumigated the house. Last night his symptoms got worse, and it seems that the infection is spreading to his ear and up the side of his head. They had him take Benedryl and continue with the pain killers. He's going to Kaiser this afternoon at 2:10.

I don't even want to think what would have happened if it had bitten Riella.

Last night baby girl and I went to our first violet meeting. It was... interesting. *g* I ended up being a judge in their "dawg" show - the worst grown plants. Personally, I don't think I know enough about growing them to judge anything... but that was my penalty for not bringing a plant to be judged. *g*

Anyway... baby girl kept chasing the dogs around going "bok, bok, bok, bok" and it dawned on me that's what she's been doing! For several weeks now she'll be playing all all of a sudden she'll get this silly grin and start yelling out "bok! bok! bok! bok!" She's been pretending to be a dog and barking!!! *lol*

Yeah, mom's just a little slow on the uptake. I also noticed last night that she seems to prefer her left hand so far.

Other things she likes to do:
Feed herself with a spoon.
Take her shoes off.
Brush her teeth.
Turn on the TV and VCR.
Climb stairs, chairs, and anything else she can get near.
Flush the toilet.
Put caps back on the tops of pens.
Unfold things - anything. Laundry, papers, what ever.

After the whole acorn thing, I'm just amazed at the things she picks up on. Her attention span and focus can be really scarry. There is no redirecting this child when she sets her mind to something. Forget about it.

Okay... just needed to think about something that brings a smile to my face before I get back to this mess...

Can we say, STRESS???
11:24am 08/08/2003

mood: aggravated
I'm so fed up with work I could just scream. Things have gotten from bad, to ugly, to far, far worse. Every time I think that things are going to calm down or level out, it blows up all over again. I've had the nightmare project from hell dropped in my lap. It wouldn't be so bad if we weren't in the middle of a lawsuit that needs information NOW. This system is so utterly fucked it's useless as it stands. I've been told basically "fix this". Yet no one can tell me exactly what's wrong with it, or what they WANT from it. Kind of hard to set up a database system with no understanding of how the data needs to be manipulated. I'm told to compare the contents of this database to print out from another department's database and told to reconcile all descrepencies. I find major problems (such as... the superior court in our county does not use the state's defined legal codes they have passed precident cases not adopted by the state yet, and the AS400 cannot use these made up codes, so every single legal code in there is incorrect), and try to figure out boss lady would like me to handle it and she says, "Ignore that." Um, NO. You want it 100% correct? Fine. I can do that. But don't tell me to ignore errors then! You want a system that's workable? Fine, give me the resources to do it with. Don't tell me to network with other projects, then tell me "don't ask anyone else questions about the system until you've run them by me first". That's not networking, darling. Give me two weeks to work my magic and merge these eight databases into one that you know, actually works, then give me time to bring them to date. No one can seem to tell me what DATE data has been entered up to, and things are missing from as far back as six months. I'm told "do what it takes to get this up and running as of yesterday" but then I'm told "but you can't work overtime to do this". *sigh*

*deep breath*
*deep breath*
*deep breath*
*deep breath*
*deep breath*

I can do this. I can do this. I CAN do this. Just need to stay focused and not let people do the crazy making shit that makes me loose track of where I am and what I'm doing.

Okay... back to fending off the wolves. (Wonder if I can use the old "steak's over here to distract you" technique?)

Won't be around today or tomorrow

mood: tired
I am going to be out of town doing a Red Cross First Aid and CPR training today and tomorrow. So, yeah, I won't be around at all. *g*

I will have to post tonight after things calm down some. I was supposed to go to a campout with Coven N this weekend, and didn't make it. I still haven't had a chance to email her and let her know why I didn't, too. *sigh* God, I must look like such a flake. First... My cycle came early again. (Is this some kind of curse?) Second... my family invited me to spend some time with them. I opted to go with them for two reasons... first, I'd have to do less while suffering from horrid cramps. Second... as my mom pointed out this might very well be the last time I can do anything with them since it looks very much like I'll be moving out of state before the end of this month.

So... yeah. Family wins out. I just wish they'd told me about it SOONER, so I could have bowed out of the coven activity with a little more notice and grace... but, hell, nothing I can do about it now. Must get going!! Running late, and I need every minute this morning.

Okay, so I did an ebay auction for a huge lot of Reilla's old clothes. I didn't have a box it would all fit in, so I went to Mailboxes, Etc. and had them box it for me and get shipping cost quotes. HOLY CRAP.

The package is 10" x 10" x 10.5" high. It weighs nine pounds.

She quoted me the following:
USPS Priority mail $35.00
UPS Ground $25.08
Fed Ex 1-2-3 $35.33

I just looked up shipping costs myself from all three of these sources, and these are the prices I found:
USPS Priority mail $17.50
UPS Ground $11.85
Fed Ex Home Delivery $8.77

When I tried to look up locaitons to ship Fed Ex, they listed the Mailboxes, Etc. with a note "Warning: This retail store may charge additional fees than the published rates."

No kidding.

Addictions and a Proud Mommy
08:55am 31/07/2003
I've become addicted to Blueberry Cream coffee from 7-Eleven. It's a weird thing, I've never been able to drink coffee, but since the baby... I can. I stopped one day when I was just so strung out I couldn't see straight, and I got a cup of coffee. It didn't make me sick. I've done it several times now in the last few months, and nada. Nothing. I'm not sure what to make of this, but I'm still resisting drinking a lot of it. (Not a good habit to get into, anyway.)

This morning... baby girl called me "mommy" for the first time. Not Mama, not UH! UH! UH! *g*, but MOMMY. Clear as day. Of course when I asked her to repeat it she went back to Uh! Uh! Uh! and mama, but hey... *g* I swear, some day she's just going to start talking in sentences out of the blue. She knows how to talk, she just refuses to.

Another thing she started to do that didn't make a whole lot of sense until last night is all of a sudden she's fascinated with squirrels and especially acorns. I mean, to the point of obsession. I have them all over my car, all over the house, everywhere. Last night I found out a few weeks ago Jim bought Ice Age, and every time the baby girl gets a chance she grabs the DVD cover points to the TV and goes UH! UH! She'll sit in her chair, mesmerized and watch it beginning to end. DUH. I had to explain to Jim... squirrels, acorns... the reoccurring theme throughout that movie... *g* He finally got it. It is also my dad's favorite kid's movie and he quotes it to her all the time. "Where's the baby?" I tell you, she is one smart cookie! Did I mention she's figured out how to unscrew lids of things now? And, she's already mastered childproof lids. *g*

There is one other things she's started doing that I'm not sure if I should be concerned about or not. I'll have to ask her pediatrician on the next doctor's visit. She is constantly shaking her head. Side to side. Sometimes with a big grin, other times, just because. She does do this appropriately when she doesn't want something, but she also just does it to do it. Sometimes I'll find her covering her ears with both hands and shaking her head. I suspect she's just playing and figuring out her own body... like when little kids spin and spin and spin and spin in place to get dizzy and walk funny. I'm just not sure if this should concern me because of her frequent ear infections? *shakes head* We're keeping an eye on it.

Mmmmm. Good stuff!
10:42am 29/07/2003
So, last night my brother came over to help me pack. Actually, it was more to just get the hell out of my parents house, but that's okay. We stopped at the store next door and I bought some low-fat ice cream sandwhiches by the skinny cow. OMG, these are GOOD!!! If you've seen them, but been hesitant to try them... do! I got the pepermint sandwiches. Mmmmm.

I'm Learning
03:59pm 23/07/2003
I left for a late lunch. I had to go get something to eat, and I decided rather than get a deli sandwich as usual and return to work I was going to GO somewhere. So, I decided to go to the rib place down the highway. I get there, and walk in... one of my coworkers is there having lunch with our ex-boss. I was torn when I saw them. My coworker did not seem happy to see me. They were sitting on the side of the restaurant that I normally do, and I made two very conscious decisions.

I was not going to intrude, because they were having a private conversation over lunch. If they'd wanted me there, they would invite me, no? So I simply picked my table (closer to them than most would, probably but it was the table I would have picked if they were not there, or had it been anyone else there). I did acknowledge both of them, say hello, etc. Then I simply said, "Well, I will leave you to your lunch." Then went and sat with my book. For a while they didn't talk or anything, then relaxed and went back to their conversation.

It dawned on me that all kinds of interesting things happen in this type of scenario. People expect you to intrude (and stay). When you don't, they're a little shocked and may even feel that you've been rude in ignoring them.

I just had to laugh, and enjoy my lunch.
