Iraqi journalist expelled from US

11:44 AM +1000, Feb 15 2003

Iraqi journalist Mohammed Allawi, with the official Iraqi News Agency, has been expelled from the US on security grounds. US officials say he has engaged in harmful activities, but don't say what those activities are, or whether he has broken any laws.

The letter said that he and his family, including his five children, had 15 days to leave the United States. "The letter say I have to leave because I am harmful to US interests," Allawi said.

A US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Allawi "has engaged in activities considered to be harmful to the security of the United States and those activities constitute an abuse of privilege of residence in this country".
