LMAO

Ed was the only smart man in the world. He worked his way through college with "The World's First Paperless Lottery."

"Here's a dollar," his customers would say. "Did I win?"

"No," Ed would reply.

"Oh. Here's another dollar. Did I win?"

"Yes. You won another chance to win."

"Oh. Did I win with that one?"

"No."

School Enrollment

Well I'm officially in classes.
I'm taking a compressed Agebra 1&2 class that the Math department recomends taking by itself because of the 3 hours daily of homework (10 credits). All you folks who offered to help with math, now's the time to show how sincere you really were.
I'm also taking technical writing (5 credits), likely another 1-2 hours homework a night.
Finally I'm also taking Survey of Biotech (1 credit), little homework seems likely.

And then I'll be working full time.

Though I was busy before huh? ah how wrong you were. Thsi will be.... exciting

Geekyness Giggles

Okay today's hysterical culling of LJ & 'net nuttiness is brought by being bored out of my goard. But these are hysterical, I promise (or double your money back!)

Prison thoughts

I wonder what would happen if we treated law breakers like people who needed help instead of people who needed punished?
This of course would not be true for all crimes, but mitigating cercumstances would certainly play into it.

School on hold

Due to an unexpectedly large jump in rent I will likely have postpone school for at least a quarter. Fortunately I can, likely, get my contract at work extended through November and can save everything not spent on the essentialls. This just puts school on hold until the winter quarter instead of fall.
Relatively minor set-back, but hopefully no big deal.

Test scores

So these are just the placement scores for what classes I have to take. The summary, for those that wish to skip the details is:
English 101
Math 084 (Elementary Algebra)

I was pleasantly surprised at the English recommendation given my grammatical & puctutaion issues (or at least my perceptions of same). The Math was not a surprise at all.

Details Read more... )

There was something interesting in the reading test that reminded me of studies I'd heard about previously. The interrelation between scent and memory is relatively obvious. Those "smells of childhood" that are so evocative of emotional responses. Well I know that the memory trigger is predominately emotional in nature. I am particularly triggered by scents in general.
So using this info as the basis, I thought I would try a little experiment with myself. So I am going to use a scent per class. For every class I take I am going to have a different scent associated with it. Say... Lemon for Math & Peppermint for English & Peanut Butter for Biology etc.. To either wear the scent, coat my binder with the scent or just have it in my environment. To have the scent in my environment when in class, when ever I study & especially when I test.
I figure keeping them separate is going to be the real trick, lots of zip-lock bags maybe.

I think this will be a fascinating experiment in self modification. I accept my Pavlovian nature and I'm going to use it to my advantage for school.... I'll let you know how it's going.

Oh & BLUE HAIR is mine! (Photo for LJ forth coming, as soon as I get another jar and get the hair darker, at the moment it's a bit too teal for my tastes.)

Testing.....

I can tell the universe was just waiting for me to do this (go to college) as everything is moving along faster than a geased weasel. They have 2 testing sessions a month on Saturdays to test out of basic Math & English. Guess when the next one is? (A smooch for anyone who guesses.) Tomorrow! Yay!

So I'll let y'all know what I score and what English & Math I get to go into.

I'm not studying before hand because I actually need to be placed in classes that will teach me what I don't know off the top of my head (oh, like good spelling and proper grammar).

So after about noon I will be wandering around Cap hill, likely trying to decide what color to dye my hair. Maybe I'll see you around if you're about.

Accepted

I got accepted to North Seattle Community College today.
Still waiting to hear from Central which is where I'd rather go.(Edit... I got accepted there too!)
Admittedly rents are lower up north, so that might be better all the way around. I'd also could be closer to kid ken, that might be nice.

School here I come.

My FAFSA got approved too, I have to come up with $2,023 for the year plus living expenses. This is totally do-able.
Go me.

Back to School or I should say...

school at last.

Some of you may be surprised to know that I never completed college.

I attended a whopping single semester taking theater, technical theater and Photography. This was when I wanted to Act for a living. Then I realized that, despite training in theater since third grade, I didn't really, honestly put in the dedicated hours required to really become a professional thespian. I didn't know what I wanted to do, so why waste money going to school when you don't know what you want to do with your life. (Especially with the added barrier/disincentive of neither parent being willing to disclose their financial information to fill out the financial aid forms.) So I said ah forget it, I'd rather eat anyway.

Nope, still don't know what I want to do. I'm going to college anyway. I'm doing what I wish someone had told me all those years ago you are supposed to go to college for. To try a little of everything, see what appeals and go from there.

I've always had a pet science. In junior high, 7th-8th grades, it was genetics and genetic engineering, absolutely riveting science, the building blocks of life, all that. One bad/boring bio teacher in high school later... Quantum physics, that became the science I pursued. I even attempted to teach myself self to understand matrix mathematics without ever having taken calculus (I will not even discus my algebra II/trig teacher, if over 50% of you class is getting D's or failing, it's not the caruculum that is the problem)... I did figure out much of the rules for how things moved through some of the equations, but I never really got what it had to do with the probability stuff. Anyway still fascinating to this day, I never took physics in high school to prevent another teacher disappointment. Lately it's been complexity theory (chaos theory is it's other name). I'm working my way towards James Click's "Chaos" even now, but it's low on my reading list. I love pop science articles and learning bits & pieces about science of all sorts.

So I'm going to study science. I'm going to go to Seattle Central Community College THIS FALL and study FULL TIME for an associates degree in science with the intention to possibly transfer to a four year institution when that is completed. I think I'm going to focus on Bio-tech as that is both interesting and likely to be profitable in the future. I may even qualify for worker re-training funds. I applied to school Friday, and I applied for financial aid yesterday. So... umm... I'm going to school. (I'm pretty sure I'll be accepted). Now I just have to go in and test out of some of the basic math & english courses and I'll be good to go. I even have enough in my saving account that if I can find a part time job that pays my expenses I should be able to pay for both years.

An interesting foot note to this. I called my mom to tell her about all this... She's thinking of doing the same thing! My Mom might go back and actually get her BA. I'd be SO proud of her. We are both excited.

So I umm commited... I'm going to school... whee.

(aaah scary, I'm gonna go hide now. It's best to commit to these things before one thinks them all the way through.)

If anyone wants to be a "voice of reality" kindly do it in someone else's journal. This was hard enough without that sort of anti-help. so...wish me luck.

Baseball! Wanna Come?

I'm working on getting together a group of folks to go out and Match the Mariners at Safeco Field June 16th.
It's a family night so the tickets we're trying to get are $10 but might range as high as $16 (if we get enough people we can get a group discount and get much better seats for only $6 more).

If anyone wants to come watch baseball with a couple of fanatics, a couple general fans, and at least one small child, please comment and let me know how many tickets you want. Korray's dad userinfodave_over & I are organizing this little sporting extravaganza. I warn you, she is quite the Ichiro fan.

I'll be arranging the ticket purchase, everyone can pay me back later (before the game though).
Let me know for sure by May 29th!

So Much life = So little writing

Summary will be forth coming sometime before the end of the summer... promise.

Cd's received in the alst 2 days:
Olive "Trickle" - I love the song "indulge me" entire reason for ordering it.
Mouth Music "Shorelife" & "Mo-di" hmmmm Galic speaking hipsters.... yummy harmonies.
Cordelia's Da "Cordelia's Dad", "Comet" & "How can I sleep?" Punk esthetic meets traditional British isle favorites. Uber tasty!!!!! I already own "spine" by them and am endlessly entranced by their music.
Jethro Tull "Songs from the Wood" the only album worth owning by these fellows as far as I'm concerned. Fell in love with "The Wistler" thanks to NPR's All things Considdered show. I've heard "Heavy Horses" is also good but I havent' heard it. I made the mistake of going to one of their concerts on their last tour and dozed through most of it except the one song from this album.
"Orginal Motion Picture Score The Crow: Salvation" composed by Marco Beltrami. Regardless of what you may have thought of this movie the dark and brooding score is a moody poets delight. Also some "Psycho" sorts of moments added into the mix.
Towering Inferno "Kaddish" a Kaddish (Kah + Dish) is a prayer or blessing in Hebrew. Imagine sacred jewish techno. Very moving and fun all at the same time.

Oh and it's spring, heh heh heh, enjoy it I am.

That's about all I have the piece of mind for at the moment.

General Strike anyone?

I've heard a rumor that several peace focused groups have called for a General Strike on the day War breaks out...
Anyone think this'll do any good? I'd join it if I had reliable transportation to Olympia to yell and shout where it might do some good. Otherwise, will enough people join this so that anyone notices?
I might take the day off anyway and see if anyone at my work notices... Doubt they will, as my over-harried boss is out the rest of the week any way. I could likely get more work done from home to boot.

Woke up scared from a deep sleep 3 hours ago, not knowing but guessing things had started. It felt like someone distantly tapping on my temples and I awoke terrified.
Going back to bed now. I'm still not sure why this whole thing has me so spooked...

Chants for tonight's Full Moon

She changes everything she touches
Everything she touches changes
She changes everything she touches
Everything she touches changes
Changes, touches
touches and changes
touch us change us
change us & touch us

Alternating with:
She touch, she touch, she touches me deeply
deep in the heart of harmony
She touch, she touch, she touches me deeply
I am the Goddess and the Goddess is me

Repeat and intertwine for hours, That's how my night is going.

Occationally throw in, for a littel varity and to slow down for a bit:
Listen to the lord and lady
call their children in the moonlight

And in more emergetically intense moments:
The raven is the spirit of
the sage and the saint and the sinner and the damned
and the sage and the saint and the sinner and the damned
I am the witch
I am the raven

I collect pagan chants & songs. I know probably more than 50 and less than 100 different pagan themed chants & songs. I am particularly fond of God chants in general and specific male diety chants in particular (as there are generally fewer of them and I really think there needs to be more, so I spread them as best I'm able.)

For the pagan inclined... what is your favorite chant or song?

Random Tao Te Ching for the day

I thought this really delightful. I thought to myself this morning "self, you need a random dose of the Tao Te Ching today." so I googled Tao & random, found myself a little site the pulls random pages of the Tao Te Ching (see it here: http://www.daily-tao.com/). I found the entry so appropriate to my life and spring and general joyful beginings I thought I'd share it with you here. Besides it's from one of my favorite translations of this material.
