"Alien Butterfly Goddess" by Shado 2004
This is one of my pieces that I consider to be visionary art. My focus is primarily to create positive images, since I feel many people focus on the dark and creepy, which definitely has its place, just not when tripping on hallucinogens. The butterfly goddess represents the alien intelligence that communicated with me on one of my personal journeys. I had a vision of a huge, translucent insect like creature with wings that had a rainbow-like liquid pulsing through it. The creature seemed to float in a dreamy ether, just barely visible, and stared at me as it slowly flapped its wings. I felt a wave of both mild fear and astonishment at the strange beautiful phantasm, and I don't think I will ever forget how powerful of an experience it was. It was like I was seeing the circuitry of the universe, and this thing floated down from the stars to check us out. Of course, my image above only represents what I saw that night. I think it would be nearly impossible to artistically convey what it actually looked like for real.

"Tears of the Black Butterfly" Medium: Digital (Adobe Illustrator) 11x17 in
I created this with my own personal transformation in mind, but it also applies on a broader sense to the world. Things are getting shaken up, burnt away, and purified. These are intense times of upheaval, but they are always followed by a renewal .The woman figure in the picture is a Kali-type Destruction / Rebirth Goddess without being her specifically. Of course tornadoes represent transformation and the foundation is changing and being remolded by magma coming out of the earth. The moons represent the emotions, small in comparison to the huge changes going on around them.

Painters must speak through paint, not through words. ::: Hans Hofmann :::
"Vincent van Gogh" + It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures
Paul Cezanne + What is one to think of those fools who tell one that the artist is always subordinate to nature? Art is in harmony parallel with nature. + A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art Salvador Dali + Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it. Henri Matisse + A young painter who cannot liberate himself from the influence of past generations is digging his own grave. "Jackson Pollock" + It’s all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen. ::: Pablo Picasso ::: Why do you try to understand art? Do you try to understand the song of a bird?

Starting out |
[18 Oct 2004|05:33pm] |
Hi everyone. I've been having an artistic crisis of late. Yes I know that sounds pretentious, but what it boils down to is that I am a visual thinker/imaginer and yet I am not a visual artist. I've been involved in theater and writing and I'm just not finding the means to express what's really on my mind. Recently I've been looking at surrealist and fantastic realist painting and finding more and more inspiration there.
So with that said, how did you all get started in painting or whatever work you do? I know this is a place for self taught artists, so how would I go about starting to teach myself the basics?
I'll probably post some links to favorite artists later, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.
Thanks -Jeni

My workplace was throwing away large plastic and vinyl banners and I've decided to make use of them - there is no chance i can get paper that size and canvas would equal mega dollars...
I figured i could spray paint it black (to make sure you can't see any signage either from the back or front) and then just prime over the top of that and off I go..
I really don't think ink, oil or acrylic for that matter will hold -
So, any ideas from anybody in regards to if there is something better I could use as a primer or other paints that may adhere better to this surface (car paint or house paint???)
