Unless Brian De Palma's directoral choices change radically (and Mission to Mars gives us no confidence that they will) Blow Out will remain his greatest cinematic achievement. A box office disaster when it arrived in 1981, it combined De Palma's manhandling of the camera with a smart storyline, great acting, crisp editing, and an astute use of sound. Mentioned as Quentin Tarantino's third favorite movie of all time, it was a factor in bringing John Travolta (who plays the lead, a sound recordist for a B-horror movie) into the casting fold of Pulp Fiction.
