There was a problem this morning with our new load balancing system - requested pages were sometimes returning random, unrelated pages. We've taken the machine hosting the load balancing code offline for a while so that we can diagnose the problem.
LiveJournal is experiencing intermittent load due to several reasons. We are in the process of creating a new load-balancing technique to help even out the stresses on our servers. We're also tweaking and adding to our "memcache" system, which stores commonly-accessed parts of the site in memory rather than relying on database lookups.
The site may be sluggish during peak times of afternoons and evenings PST, and you may experience intermittent errors. These errors will commonly go away when you refresh the page. We're working on alternate methods of handling traffic that will minimize, if not eliminate, these problems.
A running tally of known issues is kept in the large yellow box at the top of the Support page. This list is updated as issues are identified and/or resolved. Additionally, the lj_maintenance journal contains information regarding the latest wave of upgrades.
New: You can now read status messages from your LiveJournal friends page. The status account on LiveJournal only updates if LiveJournal is up and running, so be sure to check back here if you can't get to the site.
