This is one of those "hometown girl makes good" stories that Australia loves, especially when the girl makes it big overseas — in this case in the USA, beating the Yanks at their own clash-of-the-titans game, basketball. Now suddenly there's a 21-year-old, six-foot-six Australian Amazon from the Murray River heartland who's the hottest thing in the all-American game. So here it is — the tall tale of Lauren Jackson.

Lost and found
They're the most unlikely Aussies ever. But, as you'll see, they're dinky-di. Their story begins in Africa, in a country torn apart by civil war. They were among 17,000 five- and six-year-olds forced to flee for their lives — the lost boys who trudged thousands upon thousands of kilometres, searching for safety. Eventually, they ended up in a squalid Kenyan refugee camp, trapped there for 10 years or more. Then, last year, their dreams came true. Some of the lost boys were accepted by Australia, where they've found a home and a future.
