Family support emerges as the big issue for an aging society

The Female Orphan School is back
Female Orphan School by nightIt began its life as a refuge for young orphan girls and then as a hospital for the mentally ill. Now one of Sydney's forgotten historical icons has been handed back to the community. Vice Chancellor of the University Of Western Sydney, Janice Reid, says there is more restoration work to come for this heritage treasure on our Parramatta campus.

The Female Orphan School was formally re-opened on 21 October 2003. The restored building will be used as a venue for meetings, conferences and exhibitions. These photographs of the restoration were produced by UWS, award-winning photographer, Olga Nebot.

E-collection releases 36 documents from May 1973
This new release of papers includes an overview of Whitlam Government achievements in its first six months of office to 2 June 1973. The overview features annexures which list; Commissions of Inquiry, Committees and Task forces; Reports tabled; Statements arising from Commonwealth/State meetings; Treaties.

48 additions to June 1973 documents now available online
In June 1973 Prime Minister Whitlam returns from a visit to India and successful meetings with his counterpart in India. He announces the Queen's visits to Australia in October 1973 and again in February/March 1974. Among other blasts from the past - France is given orders to stop nuclear testing in the Pacific by the International Court of Justice.

Prime Minister Whitlam in Washington DC, 30 July 1973 In July 1973 Prime Minister Whitlam launches a national competition to find a new National Anthem. A joint consultative committee is to be estblished to advise on the movement of public service staff to Albury/Wodonga - Australia's first 'growth centre'. The French Government shows public disregard for international law by exploding a nuclear weapon device in the atmosphere over the South Pacific. Gough becomes the first Australian Prime Minister to visit Mexico.
