Okay, how does one go about getting one's own domain? And any suggestions on what hosting company to go with? I'm seriously contemplating getting my own (personal) domain and then setting up a webstore too (I know a bit more about the latter thanks to [info]eeyrg) but realised I don't even know the first step on how to go about doing any of it.

Wipe Out [28 Nov 2003|06:41pm]
[ mood | distressed ]

Windoze XP can bite me. In the end, I wound up fixing the first error which then created a second error which is pretty much unfixable (or at least my research tells me that). I called Dell a second time (the first time was with some woman somewhere on the India Subcontinent who could hardly speak English) and got someone who spoke the language (again, I'm not being racist but if you're in fucking Customer Support, you need to be able to communicate effectively with their customers. Esp. when they're Extremely Distressed). He was nice, we ran through a few more things but no, it was F.U.B.A.R.'d. Even though in theory the HD was fine and I could access my files (but no way to retrieve them since I have a swappable drive), I had to do a total reformat and then reinstall of all software. Luckily, I don't think I had anything on there that was irreplaceable other than maybe a few MP3s. I'm pretty certain I burned all the cds I had saved on there, didn't have any outstanding copies of any written work that I hadn't transferred over etc. I think the only thing I might not have copied were some SIMs files and some photos. I'll have to go In Search of Homer with Mick n Keef again since that was my desktop. *sigh* Thank Bog I didn't do too much work on there.

Still, I'm very unhappy about this. As long as it's up and running before I leave next Thursday, I'll manage but I'd like to take Bill Gates out back and shoot him. From my online research, the WinXP errors I got were NOT uncommon or anything I could do anything about (it was either just something that happens -- how droll -- or something VIRUS related but I have Norton Anti-Virus so I shouldn't have had any issues with that either).

There are days (like today) when I truly hate computers.

Addendum: To make matters even worse, I couldn't reinstall AoL in the laptop -- well, I could reinstall it but it wouldn't recognize my modem even though all modem tests proved Mr. Modem was working fine. The second idiot I spoke to told me I might have to downgrade to 8.0 because "this is a compatibility problem with our software that has no answer" and I nearly lost it with him. In the end, we were able to fake it out by telling it was some sort of generic modem (I believe last time I had a similar problem, it worked by telling 9.0 the modem was a Hayes Compatible but that didn't work. In fact, I tried that BEFORE I called them the first time). I cannot fucking believe that these companies write software with known bugs (the corrupted files on Win XP seem to be fairly common based on my googling for answers) and just let it go. I hate Bill Gates, I hate Steve Case (even if he's no longer with AoL) and Time Warner and everyone else associated with the fucking tech industries that ream me (and most of the rest of the world) with this shit. It's just not right. Btw, AoL seems to be outsourcing all their Customer Support to the Indian Subcontinent too judging by all their tech support people. Maybe if I could learn Hindi or Urdu I wouldn't be so annoyed by this. Fucking NAFTA...

Actually, it's over Long Island Sound (I think) and through the urban jungle (the Bronx) but you get the picture. About to go off to the maison de Mon Oncle for Turkey Day. Had a bad night in the sleep department, mostly because my lower intestine decided it really wasn't a happy ship last night. Too much salad plus fajitas from the Ground Round = most unhappy G.I. system. Must remember that raw veggies are baaaaaaaaaaad for IBS sufferers (like me). Or at least in mass quantities. The salad was good though. *whimper*

I'll have dial up so I'm sure I'll be checking in (if only to avoid dealing with people) ASAP. But if I don't/can't, hope everyone Stateside has a lovely holiday and I'll see yas sometime on Friday if not before.

Happy Holiday!

This won't mean a lot to most people but... [25 Nov 2003|01:13am]
[ mood | really sad ]

I read about the news on [info]taraljc's journal and dropped a line to a few people in the know to find out the gory details. Got it from the incomparable Rache...this is from Robert Addie's fanclub President:

Dear All,
There's really no easy way for me to tell you this.
Robert Addie died on wednesday (19th Nov) after a short battle with cancer.
He was only taken ill a few weeks ago, but when the diagnosis came it was
uncurable lung cancer.
No one is more shocked and saddened than myself, and I'm sorry if this
message is rather short, but I'm not managing the keyboard very well at the
moment....
I hope I have included everyone, please pass the news along to whomever you
need to tell.

Kirsty

I'd never had the honour of meeting him. I just saw photos of him from Weekend in Sherwood '03 at JTK's house in September or October. He didn't look well but then again it was rumoured that he'd gone through all sorts of personal problems including drug addiction. What the hell is it about cancer and deaths in November? *sigh*

The last thing I saw him in was that episode of Red Dwarf where he played Lister's butler in the episode "Timeslides". The first thing I ever saw him in was Excalibur playing a very pretty Mordred. The best thing I ever saw him do was, of course, Sir Guy of Gisburne on Robin of Sherwood. He was only 3 years older than me (and I see he shared a birthday with my dad).

It sounded like he was just starting to get his shit together again from what he'd told people this summer.

This makes me very sad. R.I.P. Robert

Hot Stuff [21 Nov 2003|05:28pm]
[ mood | confused ]

I got me my copy of Let It Be Naked and The Two Towers today. Unfortunately, my copy of LIBN is copy controlled (not unlike my Euro copy of the Bangles last album) so I don't think I'll be able to make any dubs (I usually make copies of cds so I can bring them with me on travel w/out ruining the disks or having them stolen -- several of my Bowie Ryko disks got ruined when they weirdly stuck to the sleeves of my cd case and all the art work was ruined. They still play but they look awful...). From everything I've read, there is no way around this although at least this plays on MusicMatch which is more than the Bangles do.

I've only listened to part of "Get Back" since I just got it -- so far, I'm not impressed by the sound quality. It sounds flat and compressed. I can't say what the rest of it will be like yet.

Now for dinner and then back to eBay crap.

Addendum: I stand corrected. I was able to record LIBN without a problem, at least to my hard drive. And now I can do the same thing with my Bangles cd. So much for copy control, at least for now. *evil laugh*

[ mood | shocked and stunned ]

I just discovered who was the very very funny and weird opening act for the very first concert I saw when I was a teenager (that would be Elton John, Madison Square Garden, 1976). It was Billy Connolly. Billy FUCKING Connolly! All I could ever remember about him was that he was a) from Britain (okay, I was close...he's very Scottish) b) he played guitar c) he was also a comedian and d) he had really big large banana boots. Eric Idle mentioned something about Billy Connolly's banana skin boots in a recent blog and I was like "No, it couldn't be." But it was. Oh.My.God. There's even a concert film of that period of his performance life -- I'm going to have to find out if it's still available on tape or DVD anywhere.

This is nearly as cool as the fact that I got to see XTC open for the Police in November 1980 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago (third row -- the joys of queueing up all day in the freezing cold cos it was a GA show).

Oh. My. God. Billy Connolly!

More on the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductions [21 Nov 2003|02:11am]
[ mood | grumpy ]

Since the last post about it elicited so much response (so many responses?), I dug up some info on the nominees for this year as listed back in September.

First timers were:

George Harrison
John Cougar Mellencamp
Prince
Traffic

Repeat nominees were:
Black Sabbath
Jackson Browne
The Dells
The Five Royales
Lynyrd Skynyrd
ZZ Top
Gram Parsons
Bob Seger
The Sex Pistols
Patti Smith
The Stooges.

Apparently the Cure were not considered (at least according to any of the news releases I could find). Okay, there is something RADICALLY wrong with a system that ignores Gram Parsons, Black Sabbath, the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith and the Stooges in favour of ZZ Top and Bob Seger. I would've even deal with Skynyrd and/or Melloncamp getting in before either of those two lame acts -- I may not be a fan of either but at least they have *some* validity. Sheesh.

Okay, /rant

From the official website:

CEREMONY WILL BE HELD MONDAY, MARCH 15, 2004 IN NEW YORK

New York, New York, November 20, 2003 -The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation is proud to announce the 2004 Inductees in the “Performer” category. The announcement was made today by Suzan Evans, Executive Director of the Foundation.

The following artists will be inducted at the Nineteenth Annual Induction Ceremony, which will be held Monday, March 15th in New York at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel:

Jackson Browne -- For more than three decades, Jackson Browne has been one of rock’s consummate singer-songwriters. Writing intricately crafted, deeply personal songs, he made his mark as a master chronicler of the affairs of the heart.

The Dells -- The Dells began recording in 1953 and still perform today with virtually all original members. They have performed and charted in every decade since the Fifties, making them one of the most influential vocal groups of all time.

George Harrison -- Post-Beatles, George Harrison’s career spanned three decades during which he not only furthered his artistry as a musician, songwriter, and producer (of music and numerous films), but as a humanitarian on the world stage.

Prince – Self-produced since his debut at age 20, Prince is one of the most unpredictable as well as one of the most magnificently charismatic figures in the entire pop landscape. His fusion of rock, funk, soul, metal and punk has defied all stereotypes.

Bob Seger – Detroit’s standard-bearer of rock and soul began his multi-platinum streak in 1975, followed by a decade of nearly 20 consecutive top 40 singles, all of which celebrated Bob Seger’s allegiance to and love affair with the music that provided his escape from an impoverished childhood.

Traffic -- Nurtured in the communal flush of the British Invasion, Traffic outgrew its psychedelic pop roots to become a true fusion group – melding a folk-inspired simplicity with bluesy jazz improv that was given plenty of space on its extended compositions.

ZZ Top -- With the Texas soul, outlaw boogie, and souped-up hot rod funk served up by the durable power trio of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard – ZZ Top – is literally the last word in rock. Three-plus decades on, these Funky Kings might just go on forever.

In commenting on this year’s inductees, Evans said, “These inductees represent many influential genres of rock and roll, including pop, funk, soul, boogie and psychedelia. We expect this year’s show to be unique and exciting with highly anticipated moments.”

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria considered includes the influence and significance of the artist's contribution to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation's nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the "artist" category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 700 rock experts.

The honoree in the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Non-Performer Category will be announced shortly.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was formed in 1983 and the first induction ceremony was held in 1986. All inductees are represented in the "Hall of Fame", a permanent exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum, in Cleveland Ohio.

I am, of course, quite annoyed that fucking ZZ Top was inducted while other bands (especially the Sex Pistols) were completely overlooked again. Ditto Traffic and Jackson Browne. While there were some contributions by all three (sets) of artists, there is something very wrong with the fact that the Ramones, the Clash, Talking Heads and the Police are in there but the Pistols aren't. In fact, it's a crime against humanity. Feh.

At least [info]mrpink should be happy that the Purple One finally got his due!

WHY THE HELL HASN'T MY COPY OF THE TWO TOWERS SHIPPED FROM AMAZON YET? My other 2 things did but that one, no! What the hell is their problem? Even with free shipping, it should go out TODAY. I ordered it in July -- and now they're sending me emails saying "If you want it tomorrow, just ask for one day shipping". As if I'm gonna pay through the nose for that. I'd rather just stop by Best Buy and pay more for it -- and sales tax. GRRRRRRRRRRRR. (Actually Best Buy now has it for less according to the website -- the circular said $29.99, the website says $24.99. For an extra $1.18, I might have to stop by BB tonight and see what the actual In-Store price is locally...BB.com also says it's on backorder for a week -- there's no reason why Amazon's stock should be backordered for a week though. Esp. when I put in the order in JULY!).

I want it and I want it NOW, Daddy. And a golden goose. And a teddy bear. And a train set. And lot and lots and lots and lots....

Addendum: They just put a "preparing to ship soon" notice on that order so I can't cancel it and buy it somewhere else today after all. Typical!

Honestly, how does any expect me to pay attention to eBay listings when VH-1 Classics plays "Medicine Show" by B.A.D. (and I swear I've never ever seen the viddy for it before...) followed by "Pale Shelter" by Tears for Fears followed by "I wanna be sedated" by Los Ramones. Jeezy Chreezy.

This also reminds me that I need to make an ultra-fab 80s music mix for NH since she's musically deprived (and ignorant) in that area by her own admission. I also have to do a GH mix for [info]lucy_anne and a lot of scans for [info]so_respectable and I can't remember what else at the moment.

And they expect me to list dollies for sale with all these important things on my head?!

[ mood | groggy ]

"We are preparing these items for shipment and this portion of your order cannot be canceled or changed."

My copy of CfG will be here soon. *much squeeing*

In other news, sat through a very long and arduous but lucrative (okay, for the auctioneer) auction yesterday. Bought many pink box things for resale at mostly reasonable prices so hopefully I will be able to most of them at profit. Got a few vintage dolls cheap which worries me, esp. the $110 #3 Ponytail doll. Granted she's whiter than white but she's got gorgeous hair and nice paint so for that price, I'll keep her. Also got myself a reasonable Robert Tonner 14" Betsy McCall doll and some cheap crap. We'll see how it all goes but I'll definitely be strapping myself to the computer and selling things between now and Thanksgiving.

Went to the Lee Outlet Mall this morning. Got a really cute 3 piece suit at Dress Barn Woman -- black trousers and jacket with a red satin chinoiserie sleeveless top underneath it. It looks really cute. Kind of annoying that someone switched the blouse on the one I bought so that the blouse was a size smaller than the suit and, of course, none of the other suits in the store were the same size (only smaller). It fit me despite all that and if I go no-carb between now and December, it'll look even better. Also got a red chinese brocade jacket, a black shell and a funky black with white pin stripes top. At London Fog, I bought a casual charcoal wool coat. Really wanted to get a leather casual jacket but there was nothing over a size Medium. There were hardly any plus sizes in stock at all which was annoying but I managed okay with the one I got. It's cute but actually very similar to the black dress coat I already have (well, except for the velvet cuffs & collar and Victorian type detailing). I think I can wear my funky lipstick red mod as fuck shoes with the pant suit without looking stupid. But we'll see...

Got home around 7 pm tonight, ate leftovers, watched America Dreams, went through mail, unloaded the car, etc. Not a very exciting day other than the shopping, of course.

At least I have my Concert for George, Let It Be...Naked and Katherine Kurtz novel to look forward to! (Not to mention the Two Towers Extended Edition provided it actually ships on Tuesday as promised.)

Of course, I have no clue what day it is or where we are in terms of the year. (It's November, right? And Thanksgiving is...in 2 weeks?!) So much to my embarrassment, I've missed several important birthdays of LJ friends of mine...

So happy (belated) birthday to all.

In other news, I saw most of the Prisoner of Azkaban trailer on CNN (they cut off bits of it -- it looks awesome although what's with the children's chorus?! My fave bit was the quick shot of Snape turning into Neville's grandmother...you know, the "Ridikulous!" bit...).

Across the Border [12 Nov 2003|05:52pm]
Plans for the Toronto trip are beginning to shape up. Which is good since I'll be there in a little less than a month. We're going to be there from 12/4 through the morning of 12/12 which, of course, means I will be missing out on the T.O. Bowie show by about 12 hours. If the bastard wasn't playing NYC on the following Monday, I could see him there but unless he's willing to give me a lift to the NY show, I have to go home on Friday in order to be in one piece to see him on Monday night. Feh.

We will be staying @ the Sheraton Centre hotel on Queen Street. [info]prettyh had recommended it to me and it's close to the theatre (since we'll be attending the opening night of The Producers up there) but it turns out that that's the hotel the Production Company picked as their preferred hotel and that's where the after-show party will be too. So it works. They're going to be doing the booking for us -- and here I was all set to start checking Expedia vs. Orbitz vs. Hotel.com etc. for a good rate. I bet we could prolly get a better rate that way anyway but it looks better to go through the production company AND we can use it as a write-off too. Oh the joys of being an International Media Mogul (as if...).

Can't believe it's been 8 years since I was last in T.O. -- it doesn't seem that long ago. Trying to come up with things to do that the 'Rents will wanna do to. Esp. since they're not into the whole shopping thang (believe me, I could spend most of my time in the Eaton Centre or the nifty goth shops etc and since the hotel is attached to the Eaton Centre, I could just move in there all week). I know we'll go to the Royal Ontario Museum and the Bata Shoe Museum and Chinatown and no doubt Mom will want to check out whatever antiques area there is etc. I'm sure we'll find things to do. I did last time although I suspect there will be no running off to the far suburbs In Search Of Toys R Us this time (although if there's one in town, I won't complain). I know I need to go to Sam The Record Man too. Woo hoo. I need to check on what shows are in town, what is playing at the Ballet and some other cultural things. Wow.

Now if I only felt better. *sigh*

[ mood | apathetic ]

I have a sore throat. The sick that's been threatening me for nearly a week seems to finally have found a weak spot.

My eyes are kind of messed up too (again) despite the regular use of all the prescribed gook I put in them. It's not fair.

No one has written me email in several days. I'm just hoping everyone is busy or something.

We drove home yesterday (actually as always *I* drove home yesterday -- Ma Mere slept in the car and kvetched about how tired she was despite having done absofuckinglutely nothing other than walk from the house to the car while I did all the schlepping, loading, driving, etc.)

It must be nearly girly time as I'm starting to get fucked off at everyone/everything I know.

Still need to update on a few things but what's the point? I don't think anyone really cares about what I have to say these days. Not even me.
