This is the basic reference guide to the international cinema. Put it next to your TV & VCR & you'll be able to answer the questions that inevitably arise when you watch a movie: "What other films has she been in?"; "Haven't I heard that director's name before?"; & "What in tarnation is a gaffer?" The Film Encyclopedia contains biographies & filmographies of actors, directors, producers, & cinematographers, as well as screenwriters, editors, musical directors, production designers, & critics....

American Cinematographer Manual
It is up to date with (most) current equipment & practices (obviously). Although there are more pages to this edition than in previous editions, the extra content seems to contain more verbiage at the expense of tables & graphs. It is disappointing to note the absence of lighting equipment details (photometric data & equipment range) in particular. The focus (pun intended) seems to be more towards cameras, lenses, filters & film.My Forth edition manual has a better balance in terms of verbiage...

Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting
I frankly purchased this book based on the 5 star rating offered by a 'Top Reviewer' & feel quite disappointed. Although, I would give it a two star rating because there are some useful points to ponder & use in this book. The main reason I got disappointed: the author insists very many times that movie-goers will like/dislike any movie during the first 10 minutes (not necessarily so in my & others experience) & that, to entice their interest, the first 28-30 pages of the screenplay should be...

Sleazoid Express: A Mind-Twisting Tour Through the Grindhouse Cinema of Times Square
As a description of the experience of going to the movies in Times Square before Disney made it safe for everyone this book can't be beat. This is the way it was, unsafe & fun in a sick twisted sort of way. Having been there, its dead on target. A trip into the theatres was an eye opening experience & one which could get you robbed or worse. However as an accurate description of the actual films shown the book is flawed, so much that it makes me wonder if the authors have ever watched the fil...

Nobody's Perfect: Writings from the New Yorker
Anthony Lane is an exceptionally fine writer; some of his sentences make you gasp, they're so evocative. The problem is he's a lousy film critic. His taste is dubious (from memory he liked "Saving Private Ryan") & it's hard to work out why he's a film critic. There's bound to be an art to which he's better suited - not just one he knows more about (his film knowledge is pretty thin), but one he has more passion for. You always got the feeling Pauline Kael was born to write about film; Lane is...

Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice & Sound Effects in Cinema
This is a fantastic book. David Sonnenschein is an oracle of sound. I really like the way that he covers both the commercial applications of designing sound & music for Film & Media & also the creative & even spiritual dimensions of working with sound & music. Speaking as someone who works within this sector, if one day I have anything like the understanding of sound, that Sonnenschein has, I will be a happy man !From the effects of mantras, ragas & the subconscious chantings of the american ...
