UN meeting considers plans to end hunger
AP AP
Saturday, January 31, 2004
Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, held a summit meeting Friday with the presidents of France, Brazil and Chile to draw up a far-reaching plan to help the hungry across the globe.

The meeting was being held at the request of Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has made the reduction of poverty and hunger one of his key goals.

"They are looking to find a solution that will eliminate hunger," a UN spokeswoman, Marie Heuze, said.

The UN estimates that there are between 800,000 and 1 billion people in the world who do not eat as much food as they need. One child dies from hunger every five seconds, and lack of food kills around 10 million people annually.
