Taschen is wild — where've these guys been all mylife? They've got Tomi Ungerer's Erotoscope and All-American Ads of the 40s!
"Shaking up the often conservative standards of traditional publishing, TASCHEN squashes prices and has a lot of fun doing it." — Elle Decoration, Paris

We're packing and moving from Boulder, Colorado back to Austin, where I'll be working with Jeff Kramer and Matt Sanders, my partners at Polycot Consulting. I'm having my first Ryder Truck experience. When we moved to Boulder, somebody was footing the bill, so we had actual movers who even packed for us... The relevance of this move is that there won't be any activity on this blog for a few days... should be back at it, though, by midweek next week. For those of you who support and build community networks, join us at The Fourth Annual Community Network Conference in Austin beginning Sunday.

Cool interpolated rotoscoping at Flat Black Films. This is the technology employed in creating Rick Linklater's Waking Life. More about the film in my other blog, which is part of Cory Doctorow's Fourblogs experiment.

For the upcoming Gravity Recovery And Climatic Experiment (GRACE), scientists mapped the earth's gravity, and the resulting map show's that gravity is lumpy and variable. People in India weigh 1% less than people in the U.S., for instance. When you're lost in the rain in Juarez and it's Eastertime too and your gravity fails and negativity don't pull you through, don't put on any airs.

Remember those posters of Osama with fuzzy muppet Bert in the background? This is even better. Check this reference once you've read the Rotten piece. Makes you wonder over the credibility of other supposed threats.

Interviewing web designer/communitarian Derek Powazek in Inkwell.vue on the WELL. Derek's just written one of the very best how-to books about virtual community, called Design for Community. If you want to participate in the conversation but you're not a member of the WELL, just send your questions or comments to inkwell-hosts@well.com and they'll be posted.

Leonids Tonight! | Followup on Sunday, Nov 18 (originally posted on the WELL):
Marsha and I grabbed the neighborhood mathematician and drove to Heil Ranch north of Boulder, where we parked and spread out on the grass, with blankets and pillows like we were kids sleeping out, and we lay there watching the sky so clear the stars weren't twinkling, watching the show, one meteor after another, some subtle and some brilliant, speculating whether the meteors were ice or dirt or both, sipping applie cider spiked with Jim Beam and moonbeam. We lasted an hour or more before the chill dug deep enough to get us moving again, back home. Before bed I stepped out back and saw half dozen more.
More on the Leonids here!

Stole this from jimwich: Japanese Family Crests are cool, elegant designs that evidently began appearing around AD 600 on Emperor (or Empress) Suiko's flags.

Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart prescribes drumming for health. "About 15 years ago I played for my grandmother, who had Alzheimer's. She hadn't spoken in about a year, and then she said my name. That's what keyed me to this. I see amazing things with the Alzheimer's patients. They're in a darkness you know, and after an hour of rhythm, they can say their names."

Remember when a spacewalk was a big deal? Two astronauts went EVA today and we hardly noticed... the linked account was buried on the CNN site; I found it by accident while looking for info about the Leonid Meteor Shower, coming next Sunday, November 18. We'll be taking a jug of wine and loaf of bread into the mountains for this one...

The experts are saying that the nuclear threat Is real, but we don't need experts to tell us that it's the end of the world as we know it, unless we find a way to recycle the human species.

Letter from Senator Patrick Leahy to John Ashcroft regarding the Justice Department's implementation of the USA PATRIOT Act. Leahy was shocked to hear of the decision to allow monitoring of formerly privileged conversations between clients and their attorneys:

Today I also learned through the press of another troubling development: Your unilateral executive decision to authorize interception of privileged attorney-client communications between detained persons and their lawyers. As I noted to you this morning, after having worked closely with the Department to equip Federal and State law enforcement to combat terrorism and after having received no request from you for statutory authorization to take this controversial step, and with no warning that you were contemplating such a step, I am deeply troubled at what appears to be an executive effort to exercise new powers without judicial scrutiny or statutory authorization.

For some Taleban commanders, the war in Afghanistan is more important for its impact on the donkey market than anything else. "In principle, the Taleban could bring the Northern Alliance to its knees if they managed to prevent the donkey convoys getting through. However, in many areas, Kabul regime commanders prefer money to victory."

Why screw around with a noisy, potentially explosive rocket when you can float into space dangling from a helium-filled balloon? Andy Elson and Colin Prescot are going to do just that, ascending (they hope) to 132,000 feet with QinetiQ's balloon.

Ghost Sites of the Web has been around for a while, but the list of sites archived in its Museum of E-Failure has grown quite a bit since we last looked at it. Dig the alternative Pathfinder blurbs for the OJ Simpson trial: Guilty vs. Not Guilty...!
