October 18 / 19, 2003 Moths on the Windowpane By VANESSA JONES Oct 12, 03 There is a moth on my bathroom window It's reminding me of Olive Cotton- I read of her death 10 days ago- Cotton did a photo of moths "Moths on The Windowpane", 1995. Her daughter, Sally McInerney wrote: "Moths on the Windowpane is probably her last image--one that was made at her home shortly before the closing of the Cowra studio, and at that stage only proofed. Yet it's strongly connected to the other earlier studio: the little moths are like the raindrops on the city window, with Darling Harbour dark and blurred beyond". * 5 days ago, one arrived on my bathroom window. Flew in, as I was walking in. There were some things on the windowsill. A container of cotton buds and cotton wool, Placed there by somebody else. Everyday, that moth is there Above the cotton wool and cotton buds. Her death was announced a week after Edward Said's (1935-2003). * Olive Cotton is to be buried where she lived for over 50 years, at "Spring Forest", Cowra, and I read that Edward Said will be buried in the Middle East, in Lebanon. Both going to resting places where they had deep connections to the land, which they'd photographed, or written about, over their lifetimes. Both been at one with. Mentally/ physically/ spiritually. Both, so utterly human. Just as Said gave a voice, a framework for Arabs, the oppressed, and critical thinkers, Cotton gave subtle, evocative, visual narratives of the world- Poetic, sensual views- Cautious, hesitant. Ahh God, always in the mirror. But you see, its not those calls that keep us up at night. It's the other clicks to call waiting that make it all so sickening. The clicks to call waiting that really matter are those that if you were to press your ear hard up against the oval office door and pause in complete silence you would then hear the distinct madness of a crazy desperate sobbing and a telephone wild ringing wild, off the hook.
