i have a headache! [15 Feb 2005|04:09pm]
[ mood | headachy/hungry ]

this morning me and ms. rogers were supposed to have car rider duty. i got to school at 7, and ms. rogers wasn't there. instead, mrs. brophy was out there. she said ms. rogers wasn't going to be out there today. ms. rogers finally got there at like 7:20, and said she forgot to tell me that every 4th time or something weird, mrs. brophy does car riders in the morning. ^___^; ms. rogers got my cell phone number so she can call me if she forgets to tell me something at school.

the kids were supposed to do cursive writing today from 8-8:30 like they did last week, but mrs. mintz, the librarian, wasn't at school. mrs. holloman went to the library to try and turn the video on closed circuit, but the door to the tv and mrs. mintz's office was locked so mrs. holloman couldn't get in. i guess mrs. mintz thought someone might steal the cursive writing video, and lord knows we wouldn't want that tragedy to occur.

differentiated "gender" math was today. i looked last night for some neat, super exciting fun fraction activity, and there are none to be found. at least, not where i'm looking. i finally decided in my sleep that i would do something with a recipe. i gave them there usual worksheet to start off. then we reviewed stuff from last week. then, i wrote a recipe for chocolate chip cookies on the board. i had the kids illustrate the recipe using pictures and fractions. (the recipe called for 2 eggs, so they had to draw 12 and color 2 of them. that kind of thing.) well, they absolutely loved it. after they did the cookies, i had them make up their own recipe for something and illustrate it. they also loved making up their own. there were some really good ones, and some really silly ones. some silly recipes included ingredients such as: TNT, bugs, worms, dirt, hotness, and get this- an eatable voice box.

my phone just went "beep beep beep!" it seems colin has lost his cable connection or something, so no internet for him today. or right now anyway. silly computers. guess we won't be playing canasta today! ^__^;;

back to fractions- yes, the recipes were quite silly, yet entertaining. i think i shall share a few with you:

"Bug Pie:" First add 12/12 cups of bugs. Then you add 10/12 cups of sugar. Warning: This may make you want to kiss your teacher.

"The Talking Hamburger:" 1 bun, 1 meat, 3 pickles, 1 eatable voice box, 1/4 bottle of ketchup, 1 bun. Warning: It will make you scream like a girl. (When I read this out loud to the class, Daniel really DID scream like a girl, and Mrs. Holloman's class looked over at us like we were crazy ^__^;;)

"Super Duper Sour Candy:" 100 cups of sour salt, 1,000 cups of sugar, 2 cups of green flavor. Bake it at 1,000 degrees F. Eat 1/2 every hour. Warning: It will make you hyper!

"Steem:" 7 1/2 cups of sugar, 10 cups chocolate, 6 cups of vanilla, 7 cups of M&M;'s, 7 cups butter, 10 cups hot salsa.

"Cheese Crackers and Lemonade:" 1 can of cheese (1/1), 1 cracker (1/1). Squirt the cheese on the cracker. Tehn you get some sugar for the lemonade and pour water and ice in it.

"Chocolate Milk:" 1/1 chocolate cow, 1/1 empty jug, 30/90 milk. Squirt the milk into the jug.

"Super Dooper Ultra Bursting Your Mouth Open Sour Ring Pops:" 10/10 cups of sour, 5/10 rock pops, 1/2 pepsi, 1/2 salt, 3 cups of sparkles, 1/2 sause.

"Enemy Pie:" 10 pounds of worms, 5 pouncs of dirt, 1 pound of fire, 5 pounds of chocolate chips.

"Exploding Cookies:" 2/2 cups sugar, 1/1 salt and vinegar, 10 gallons of gas, 2 TNT's, 2 houses of oil, 2 houses of hot sauce, 1 cup of poisons. (yeah....okay ^_____^;;;)

"Talking Noodles:" 1/1 static, 2/2 spoons, 1 cup noodles, 1/1 broken heart, 1 voice box, 3/3 cups of love. Warning: It will drive you crazy and make you scream!

"Pizza:" Get a big bread. Put 2 cans of sauce on the bread. Put some cheese on the bread. Put 30 pepperonis on the bread. Put it in the oven. Eat it.

crazy kids. ^___^;; i had to have a talk with them about appropriate and realistic recipes.

the rest of the day went okay i suppose. during specials/planning period, ms. rogers asked me if i had given brandy lesson plans. she said mrs. holloman approached her and wanted her to ask me if brandy asked for my social studies unit. i said yes. i told ms. rogers i only gave her the core content numbers and worksheets i used. ms. rogers said that was fine. mrs. holloman just wanted to make sure i didn't give brandy actual lesson plans, and i didn't. ms. rogers went on to say that she doesn't make me do lesson plans because she knows i'm organized and prepared. she said some people just have to be made to do the lesson plans (aka- brandy). she also said if brandy keeps asking me for stuff or if i feel in the middle, just let her know and she'll tell mrs. holloman.

also during specials/planning period, i talked to ms. rogers and mrs. teague about logan for my student study. ms. rogers said mrs. teague might have some really negative things to say about logan, but she didn't really. i just think her class was too un-structured for him. there was a rough moment today where he wasn't doing his writing. brandon, a special ed. teacher was working with him, but logan just sat there angry with his arms crossed. ms. rogers had to get on to him. he finally got it done.

we didn't do science today. we'll do more tomorrow, but today i wanted to try and get their writing close to being finished. i'm so sick of these foldable little book things they make. it takes weeks to finish them. ms. rogers said that next week i can just make up my own writing lessons because she's tired of the little books too.

phonics went a little smoothers today i think. the kids went outside for recess. it was like 70 degrees out today! it's insane! it's supposed to be february for cryin' out loud! anyway, i stayed inside with emily's mom. she was sorting books and i graded papers.

ms. rogers said since i came this morning i didn't have to stay for afternoon car rider duty. i stayed in the room for a few minutes with allee, one of ms. rogers' daughters, and then i went down to car rider duty anyway. ^__^; now i'm home. i've had a headache for about half the day now. i need to take a shower and rest and do some work i guess. ^__^;; tomorrow is wednesday- the week is about half over. finally.

You Know You're From Kentucky When...

No matter how much you think you talk normally, when you head up North they all think you talk like a redneck

Your English teacher says things like "Y'all" and "Ain't Got None"

The best restaurant in town is the Cracker Barrel

No matter how bad UK's basketball team is, you still belive they'll pull it off and make it to the Final 4

You still believe the South should be it's own nation

You believe the Civil War was not a far fight

It's not an uncommon site to see a fat man in overalls and a cowboy hat drivin' down the road in a beat up Chevy with a confederate flag hangin' off the back with music from Johhny Rebel blastin' out of his radio

Biscuits, gravy, and grits is your favorite breakfast

Wakin' up with coons and squirrels on your back porch is not an uncommon thing

To you, huntin' aint killin', its sorta like grocery shoppin'

You own at least 10 country or southern rock cd's

You only own a pair of church shoes and winter shoes

In the summer you don't wear shoes

Even your grandmother chews tobacco

You consider the northern part of the country "The Union"

A rebel flag doesn't simbolize racism to you

Your church parking lot is filled with pickups

The first words out of your mouth every time you see friends are "Howdy!", "HEY!" or "How Y'all Doin'?"

You actually know who Toby Keith, Brooks& Dunn, Keith Urban, Montgomery Gentry, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks, and George Straight are.

A carbonated soft drink is a COKE, regardless of brand or flavor.

You refer to Louisville as "The Ville."

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Kentucky.

i need a pillow.... [14 Feb 2005|02:10pm]
[ mood | sore ]

i am so exhausted. ^___^;;

okay, so this morning i woke up feeling like crap. no, i felt like crap that had been run over by a steam engine. ^__^;; i just felt sick, nauseated, achy, etc. i couldn't miss school though because ms. rogers didn't leave any notes for the sub. i was supposed to be there to teach, and i of course had all the instructions in my head.

so...i went to school. i got there and worked until time to get the kids. the sub got there at the last possible minute. in fact, the sub sat at ms. rogers' desk all day and barely said or did anything. :P math with the froot loops went pretty well i think. i read the kids a valetine book, and they enjoyed that. i started my science unit, and i felt rushed, but i think the kids got a good introduction to states of matter. this morning was pictures. we had to switch with mrs. brophy's class as far as time. i got all of that figured out i think. ashlee forgot to bring her money. she didn't tell me she even had any! i found it in her valentine bag. i took it to the picture people.

things got pretty hectic when it was time for reading/phonics. the kids were all confused about their phonics and of course, i don't know how to explain it very well, but we got through it. the kids talked and talked and i kept having to tell them to talk. i threatened them with no recess. i told them i'd tell ms. rogers if they didn't behave. i did reading groups by myself, and they were sorta interrupted by mrs. brophy's class having to have their pictures re-taken. the kids were hyped up. we got our homeroom kids back, and were supposed to have recess at 1:30, but i wanted the kids to get their valetine's passed out before recess so it wouldn't take away from the actual party and eating and all. well...at 1:45 they weren't finished so we went to recess anyway. we came back in, and all hell practically broke loose:

valentine's were everywhere. parents were everywhere. kids were talking and not listening. i had to ring the bell like 5 times. kids were too busy talking that they weren't eating. cokes were spilled. froot loops and candy was crushed. skittles skittered across the floor. trash was everywhere. at 2:30 when it was time for kids to start leaving, most still didn't have their backpacks. the car rider bell rang, and car riders were still in the room! the bus rider bell rang, and jaxon suddenly didn't know if he was a bus rider or car rider. nathan realized that the walkers had already left. the sub left and didn't even say bye to me. travious left his valetine's under the table. emily's mom stayed and helped me clean up a bit and put the chairs on the tables. sheesh. it was a madhouse. i survived.

i did get several valetine's from the kids. i even got some candy. connor got me a big chocolate apple with a worm inside it, a gummy worm that is. they had pepsi, juice, sierra mist, and a heart cookie for their party. not much in the way of food. i brought a bowl of whale shaped cheese crackers, pretzels, froot loops, m&m;'s, marshmallows, and chex cereal. so they had that to eat too. ms. rogers sure got a lot of presents, too bad she wasn't there to get them all!

the day went okay overall i guess. i just sorta feel used. ^___^;; it's like child labor or something. i worked all day, for no pay, and the sub didn't do anything! ^___^;; i mean, i was fine teaching everything, but she could have helped with the valentine's and the party, and bathroom breaks and stuff at least. oh well. ^___^;;

maybe someday, eventually, i will get to actually be with my boyfriend on valentine's day now that i actually have one, and have had one for a few years now. at least we have a date for friday! ^___^;;

oh yeah, on friday me and katee went and saw 'pooh's heffalump movie.' it was quite cute. ^___^ eeyore was even in the movie. shock, shock. we went to the theatre at the mall and had popcorn and kit-kat. yum-yum! we also went out for supper (i won't mention where we went. *blushes!*) my parents went out also for their valentine's date. they went out to eat and saw 'hide and seek' which my mom said was weirder than 'secret window.' so i dunno!

today i've been working all day on my portfolio and science unit and stuff. i think i've got most of it figured out. i still haven't started on the student study yet though. i think i'll do that later. ^___^;; i was also counting out 25 bags of 100 froot loops. well not froot loops, tootie frooties (the wal-mart brand, which comes in a huge bag). we're going to use froot loops to do multiplication tomorrow. the kids will be so excited. they've been dying to do multiplication. ^__^;;

tomorrow should be exciting: i get to be in total charge, there's the party (i have to fill out valentine's!), and class pictures. i have to figure out what i want to wear! whatever i wear will be forever memorialized in a class picture! when jarrett is 50 years old and he looks back at his class picture, he'll see me- miss ashley! i have to make myself look like a nice, cute, smart teacher! ^_______^

pocus is, i think, officialy a house cat. she stayed in katee's room last night. no problems. she's slept most of the day. she's warm, has food, a warm bed...man, she prolly thinks she's in cat heaven! she's cute though. me and pouncy had quite an exciting game of chase the rainbow ball earlier. she was tossin it up in the air and everything! that cat of mine is gifted. oh, i don't guess i've ever posted a picture of pocus- here she is (camera made her eyes glow!). followed by pouncy, and a picture of pumpkin with his mouth stuffed full of paper. silly guy. ^___^;;

i'm going to be in charge! o_____o [12 Feb 2005|01:51pm]
[ mood | busy ]

yesterday was a pretty good day. to reward the kids who pulled less than 2 cards during the week, we ate lunch in the classroom again. dylan didn't get to eat with us, and so he cried. he got over it i guess though. maybe now he'll make "better choices" next week.

ms. rogers and i filled out my weekly goals for next week. i told her i wanted to put phonics on there since i have to start teaching that next week. she gave me the saxon phonics lesson for next week and said it'd be fine, that it tells you what to do on the paper. well it kinda does, but it doesn't explain all the symbols and stuff, so i need to learn some more about all of that. i also put on there about monitoring student work more, especially the IEP students. she said my classroom management is great. ^___^

i'm doing my science unit next week, so i have to work on that this weekend. i also have to work on my student study. dr. edington wants it finished or almost finished by thursday when she observes me. oh, speaking of that, i need to find a science activity to do with the smartboard. ms. rogers and mrs. holloman went through all of their classroom books to find out which ones are not A.R. books. there were TONS that were not A.R. books, so, ms. rogers and mrs. holloman are giving them to the kids. lots of kids don't have books at home. ms. rogers told me to look through them and find some for my future classroom. i got a bunch of good ones. i got several tomie depaola books and eric carle ones. i also got some good science ones and language arts ones. i'm going to look through them again on monday. ms. rogers let each kid take 4 books home to keep, and there's still TONS left! i also got my diary of a worm book from the book fair!

monday is the valentine's day party. ms. rogers won't be there, so there will be a sub there, but i'm going to be in charge. o_______o i'm going to be doing everything!! it should be fine though. monday is also picture day. ms. rogers has never missed a party or picture day she said. she told me what to do about pictures and what i'd have to fill out. she also told me to get in the class picture with the kids. so that's kind of neat. ^____^ the sub might do one reading group while i do another, but other than that, i get to be the teacher!

we took pocus to the vet today. she got her shots and stuff. found out she has some tapeworms so we got some medicines for that. she's going back in a month for the rest of her shots and to be "fixed." ^___^;;

i should do work now! or...very soon anyway! ^___^;;;;

very disturbing news... [10 Feb 2005|06:51pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

okay, well today ms. rogers was back. apparently she left yesterday because she didn't feel very well. anyway, the kids were still sorta hyper today moreso than they have been. i dunno what's up with them. they's kids i guess.

it was double math today. it went on for-evvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeer. oh man, the kids were so sick of it; i was so sick of it, but we got through it. i wanted to choke a few of them, but we survived. cubie is still out of school. he hasn't been at school since last thursday. poor little dude. his brother said he's pretty sick lots. we're going to sign a card for him tomorrow. the kids all miss him. it's rather cute. ^____^

okay, so i mentioned that before i went to lexington the last time, there was a brief faculty meeting in the library about things going on in the bathrooms. well... the tv station was at the school today. it got out what the issue was. well, kinda. apparently, things have been going on at earlington school too. over there, a couple of first grade boys were caught in the bathroom trying to have anal intercourse. yeah...first graders. so...either they've seen it on a movie or witnessed it themselves, because how else would they know about it? at hanson, two second grade boys were doing sexual things in the bathroom. the boys have all been suspended and are not at school. i remembered a certain boy was not in fraction math the other day. i haven't seen him since last tuesday in fraction math. makes me wonder if he was/is involved. i dunno. anyway, it's very disturbing to think about such young kids doing such things at school. it's sad.

i told ms. rogers about the whining yesterday. she made them do the spelling word coding thing over again. today was better for the most part. it was a short reading day because it was double specials day. i got to go to the book fair. i got me 4 books and katee a book. (i got us both the third book in the freddy the hamster series we like so much.) so mostly school was fine today. nothing especially outstanding happened today that i can recall.

i'm pretty tired, so i'm off of here for now. tomorrow, my parents are going on their valentine's day date. i guess me and katee will spend some sister time together. we haven't in quite awhile. we'll probably go see that heffalump movie. it looks cute.

um...bye? zzzz...zz......zzzzzz...z..zzzz...zzzz.....

my yesterday [10 Feb 2005|05:42pm]
( wrote this yesterday. livejournal was dead and wouldn't let me post. :P )

today was insane.

this morning the kids were extra wired for some reason. it was sooooo hard to keep their attention during math. the lesson was on adding and subtracting two digit numbers with dimes and pennies (the third lesson on this). well, this lesson called for the kids to use actual play money to solve problems. they thought it was boring for the most part. we've been working on the concept for like 3 days now. some kids said they already knew how to do it and seemed bored. the kids were grouped in pairs, so it was noisy. they weren't paying good attention because they had the money to play with. i had to threaten them by saying if they didn't be quiet they weren't going to the book fair. (i'm buying some books tomorrow. ^_____________^ books!!)

anyway.... then, when the kids were having music, ms. rogers informed me she was leaving at 11:00. she told me this at like 10:50. i don't know why she left or why she waited to tell me. anyway, a sub came. a young, ditzy, quiet lady not much older than me. i did my usual writing lesson from 11:00-11:50, then from 11:50-12:15 we had lunch. after lunch...things went insane.

at 12:30, the kids from the other classes came in for reading. ms. rogers left tons of work for them to do. one thing was the kids had to write their spelling words in code. they were given a sheet with the alphabet listed with numbers underneath. they were supposed to write the word in number code. well, will missed the point. he wrote any word he could think of in code (it, of, up, etc.). when the sub told him he did it wrong, he burst into tears. he was so stressed out about work and not getting it all done. he and several others actually spent their recess doing work, by choice.

the kids didn't understand lots of the work. i don't know if they had never had anything like it or what. tons of questions were asked. i have neeeever been asked so many questions i swear. they were loud, they couldn't sit still, they would finish one thing and try to read or talk or something and then i'd have to remind them they had more work to do. daniel kept getting up and wandering around. kyler had his books he got from the book fair and connor kept getting up and trying to look at them. payton missed school yesterday (he went to the UK game) so he had extra work. the sub thought the kids were great, and much better than other classes she has subbed for. :P (where has she been?!) they were just so extra whiny today. it's good ms. rogers had lots of worked planned or things would have been worse. recess was inside, and it was loud, noisy, and just plain chaos.

still, the sub did practically nothing. i mostly got stuck doing everything which was dumb because she got paid and i didn't. :P anyway, i survived. i hope we have a better sub on monday for when ms. rogers is gone all day. the valentine party is that day. ^____^; they'll be wild anyway.

i need to be working on my science unit and student study. i'm being observed next thursday during science, and i'm going to use the smartboard. my student study... i haven't started writing it yet. i'm not quite sure how exactly. ^_____^;; guess i'll figure it out. me and brandy talked about it today during the kids' specials. she said she sometimes wished she had ms. rogers like i do. she also said after her observation monday and then what mrs. holloman told her, she almost felt like quitting. ^__^;;

it's snowing right now! just some flurries i think. no accumulation expected. :P that means school won't be cancelled. oh well, i'm getting books tomorrow! ^____^

lots of stuffs! [08 Feb 2005|04:23pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]

friday was the day of the awaited treasure hunt. oh! it was so unbelievably coolness! first of all, i gave the kids their assessment. it was a little too long for them to finish, but i knew that ahead of time. i just needed to see how much they knew, and several of them did finish, but there are always those who don't. anyway, it's good to have too much instead of too little. when they have nothing to do, they get antsy. so, after their assessment, i got them on the carpet and read them this really cute book called 'pirate school.' i hadn't read it before. it's usually a good idea to make sure you've read a book before you read it to the kids, but since this was a beginning reader book, i figured it had to be pretty safe. it was, of course, and really cute. ^__^ definitely worth the $3.99 or whatever i paid for it.

after the book it was time for lunch. lunch was really neat on friday because ms. rogers let the kids who pulled 2 or less cards all week eat in the classroom instead of the lunchroom. she let them watch tv too. only 3 kids had to miss out and stay in the cafeteria. friday was pizza day (yay!!)! ms. rogers usually lets the kids get a treat out of the treasure box on friday, but she used the eating in the classroom as a reward last week. she's doing it again this week too. when the kids were in their specials before lunch, i hid all the clues around the room.

let me explain what i did for the treasure hunt. i took four pieces of beige paper and taped them together. i drew a map of the classroom on the paper. then, i cut each of the 4 pieces of paper into 6 sections, making 24 pieces. on each piece, i wrote a clue. for example, the first piece was the one i had and it told them where their first clue was. the clue was something like "you're on your way to find the treasure! the first clue is where you sit to take an A.R. test!" so i drew out one of my magic popsicle sticks with names on them and that kid got to go look around the computers for the next clue. everyone got to find one clue. every time we found a clue, we turned it over and laid it on the floor. piece by piece, we made the map of the classroom. the last piece was supposed to be taped to the bottom of my shoe, and it was, until some of the kids spotted it. before lunch a clue fell out from under a table and they about went hysterical! so instead of the last clue being on my shoe, i had it up my sleeve. i took it off my shoe after they saw it. the last piece of the map was the "X" that marked the spot. the treasure was hidden in the Saxon Math box. the kids were sooo excited! i felt bad though, because we went over our time a little so kids from the other classes were coming in for reading and saw ms. rogers' class having a treasure hunt, and they got slightly jealous. ^___^;

the kids were thrilled with the treasure: a necklace (either red, gold, green, blue, or purple), a chocolate gold coin, and a gold 'pirate' coin. you would have thought they just won a million dollars! three kids were absent. i gave dylan and jaxon their stuff yesterday, and poor little cubie still isn't back to school yet! oh, jarrett was also feeling pretty sick on friday, so he kept asking me how i was and have i ever felt this sick before, etc. he's sort of odd, but i like him more every day. ^___^ logan gave me a hug! ms. rogers had told everyone they needed to be quiet so i didn't have to talk loud and hurt my voice more.

ms. rogers loved my treasure hunt! she said it took a lot of creativity and preparation to make out all the clues and put them in the right spots. ^______^ she said she was glad she got to see the creativity dr. edington said i had. mrs. holloman loved it too. we had a faculty meeting after school, and mrs. brophy saw my treasure box and loved it and thought it was a cute, neat idea. ^__^ yay! the faculty meeting was about some problems that have been occurring in the bathrooms, mostly the boys. no one can go to the bathrooms by themselves now. whole classes have to go together. apparnetly, something happened and legal action might be taken against the school. only teachers who are involved directly know the full story, so i don't know very much about it all.

i went to the doctor friday morning. i called ms. rogers at 6:40 and told her i was going and i'd be there as soon as i could. i got to multicare at 7:05 or something (after being stopped by a stupid train forever) and they were being soooo slow. at 7:21 i asked the receptionist if they knew how much longer i was going to have to wait. after that, i was called back. i didn't have strep throat (thank goodness), but my throat was red, and i had some infected drainage (yummy) and fluid on my ears and stuff. what a great combo! anyway, i rushed to school and got there at 8:06. ms. rogers asked how i was. she did calendar for me, which i thought was really nice. she told me if i needed a break or anything to take one. i made it through the day, drove to lexington, and got to see someone adorable! ^___^

me and colin ate yummy food ^__________________~ and went and saw finding neverland. it was sad! i knew the lady was gonna die, but those poor kids! no mom and no dad! and a semi-evil grandmother! but at least they got peter pan i guess.

the weekend was too short (as usual), and i sadly returned home. i began feeling worse. i woke up yesterday and felt pretty terrible, but i went ahead and went to school anyway. i was supposed to have car rider duty at 7:00, but ms. rogers told me i didn't have to stand outside in the rain. i stood inside, and she told me just to go to the room. the day went okay pretty much. ms. rogers told me again if i needed a break to take one. she said if i needed to leave early and go home and rest i could. i went ahead and stayed though. i survived somehow. the kids were so sick

yesterday. 3 were absent, 2 went home, and poor halle, she was coughing so hard she sounded like a dog barking before she finally went home. they were coughing, sneezing, tissues were over-running the trashcan. sickness. yucky. (travious pulled 4 cards on the first day of the week!) after school i was supposed to have car rider duty again, but ms. rogers told me to go ahead and leave, that i didn't need to stand in the hall with screaming kids. i came home, laid on the couch most of the rest of the night until colin got home from school and called me.

today was an okay sort of day. it was differentiated math day, which i have grown to hate. i'm sick of doing fractions with a group of boys who are annoying and don't pay attention and the worst part is- i still don't even know all their names! ^___^; it was okay, don't get me wrong. it's just an hour with them is about 45 minutes too long. this morning before the bell rang, only 11 kids were there. slowly, more straggled in. we ended up only having 2 people absent.

logan had a bad day. friday and monday were great for him. he even brought back his homework and everything. today, however, started off good with him bringing his homework, but then there was an issue in his differentiated math class. i don't know if he touched someone or called someone names or what, but he got in trouble. he was crying even. the rest of the class started on their dialogue journals, and he had to finish math. when he was done, i was his partner for journals. after journals was special time, and today's special was computer lab. me and ms. rogers walked them to the lab, and then the next thing i knew, ms. rogers is pulling logan out of the lab and yelling at him in the hallway. he was probably embarassed, but ms. rogers wanted him to know how serious she was. i guess she wasn't "yelling," just talking really loud. anyway, logan sorta hit jarrett in the head, playing like. ms. rogers gave him a major lecture about how she was not going to tolerate that kind of behavior and how he was not going to act like that in her classroom or anywhere. she took him back the room and didn't let him have special time. he cried some more i think. i went and made some copies of map worksheets for brandy, and when i got back, ms. rogers said she hoped she hadn't scared me off! later on, logan started talking to ms. rogers and i heard him saying how he doesn't get much sleep because he gets home late at night. he has to go to sacramento (where he used to live) or something. anyway, he has a rough life i guess. the rest of his day was much better after that though.

i keep remembering things, so sorry if i jump around a little. yesterday was brandy's observation. i'm not sure how it went. she got told the same thing i did though about needing a system to call on students (hence my popsicle sticks). during special time though, mrs. holloman was asking brandy about her science unit she's doing this week and she said she hand't did all the planning for the lessons yet and mrs. holloman said she could NOT do that. that because of her lack of planning, hers (mrs. holloman) and ms. jennifer's plan books were not filled out completely because they had to wait on her. she told brandy all this in front of me, which was embarassing for brandy i think. ^___^;

there was a PTA meeting tonight, but i didn't have to go. ms. rogers told me she might not even go, but that no one was going to be there taking notes about me being there or not. anyway, she said i should come home and rest.

oh, did i mention my teeth have been KILLING me?! yeah, for over a week now i guess. my wisdom teeth/tooth (?!) on my left side has really been bad. my mouth is swollen inside even. i can't have anything done about it really until spring break i guess though. ^___^;

i think i've said enough for now probably!! um...i wanna play with my friend colin now! ^____^

today and yesterday [03 Feb 2005|05:33pm]
[ mood | busy ]

yesterday seems like forever ago. ^___^;

logan had a good day yesterday. he made good choices, did his work, brought his homework back, all that good stuff and jazz. we had double math yesterday. oh god, it went on forever!! ^__^; double math days drag on and on and on and on and on and... yeah. the kids were still very into the map unit. some of them aren't quite getting it though. some still don't know how to find something in a map and then look and see if something is north, south, east, or west of it. cubie has really been into it too, which is cute. ^___^

today, logan had another good day. ^___^ i talked to ms. rogers during the kids' specials, and she said logan is new to the school this year. he came on the second day of school from sacramento, kentucky. she doesn't know where his dad is. ms. rogers thinks the reason his afternoons are so bad sometimes is because he knows he has to go home soon and he doesn't want to. he doesn't have a good home environment really. he spends a lot of time with his 18 year old cousin, so there's no telling what he's seen. it's sad.

i used my rainbow popsicle sticks today. i wrote each kids' name on a popsicle stick. i put the sticks in a cup and drew one out at a time when i was asking questions. this worked really well, and the kids loved it! they want me to always use the sticks. it makes sure everyone gets a turn, and i think they did pay more attention because they didn't know if they were going to be called on or not.

i told the kids yesterday if they went home and drew a map of their room or house and brought it back today, i'd give them a treat. several brought theirs back. cubie insisted he had his. (he said yesterday he was going to do it so he could get a treat) he really thought he had it, but it wasn't in his folder or backpack. i told him to bring it tomorrow. ^___^

tomorrow is treasure map day. we're going to hunt for treasure!! the kids keep asking me where it's at and i told them i don't know, and i really don't! i have no idea how i'm gonna do the whole thing. ^___^; i need to do lots of planning tonight. cubie did really good today and telling which way was north, south, east, and west. i did some more practice with grids and directions with the kdis today on the overhead. they seemed to better understand it today. i'll find out for sure when i check their papers later. dylan won't be at school tomorrow. he's gonna miss the treasure hunt! i told him i'd save him some treasure though. ^____^

well, things are still going pretty good. ^___^ there's talk about american idol at the teacher's table during lunch. man, it's always so freezing in the cafeteria! i've got work to do! tomorrow i'm going to lexington after school. i have a date with someone cute. ^___~

fractions are all around us! [01 Feb 2005|05:46pm]
[ mood | determined ]
[ music | joan osborne - one of us ]

okay, so last night i was trying to come up with an activity to do with fractions. i hadn't found much of anything good on the internet before when i looked. i finally just decided to go wit some paper folding, to show them equivalent fractions, and then i decided to let them find fractions around the room, finishing up with drawing pictures of their families and writing fractions to show boys and girls, people and pets, etc.

well, i didn't know how good they would do with finding fractions in the room, but i thought it would make it more real-life for them. they loved! they were so super quiet and came up with some really clever fractions. dustin's nostrils are fractions, for example. ^___^; his whole body was. but there was some really good ones too. it made them realise fractions are everywhere every day. ^__^ it went over well.

my second lesson in my map unit went well also! i had about 6 kids find out where the titanic sunk at (atlantic ocean). some got more specific: "the north atlantic ocean," "off the coast of canada," "600 miles away from halifax." anyway, they all said something about the atlantic, so they got a treat from me. ^__^ (candy!) and justin had the wrong answer, but i didn't say they had to find the "right" answer, so he got candy too. they liked the map book i started reading, and they liked the treausre map worksheet i gave them. it was a successful day. ^___^

brandy was back. she asked about our units again. i told her what ms. rogers said, and brandy was like, "oh! no! i meant could me and you work together in planning the units, not put the classes together!" well...that's not what she made it sound like before all those times she'd mentioned it! anyway, so i guess i'll share some of my map stuff with her, and she's gonna make a science unit and share with me. i'm sure i'll be modifying her stuff, and i'm sure she won't do a neat treasure hunt like me! she better not want my treasure box!!! :P

logan had some difficulties today. first, this morning i asked him where he was yesterday. he said he had to go to a family meeting and that someone had died. well, today he was pretty aggressive. he got...not yelled at, but talked to very loudly by ms. rogers and mrs. holloman after he had his hands on a kid. he's also been a bit of a name-caller lately i think. during social studies, he wasn't doing his work. he said his stomach hurt. i don't know what to do about him. i need to really get started on my student study as far as talking to lots of different people in the school about logan. he can be such sweet, smart kid. there's something going on with him though.

supper time is now!

observation and maps [31 Jan 2005|05:12pm]
[ mood | pleased ]

today was great. ^___^

my observation went pretty well i'd say. ms. rogers and dr. e thought so too. the kids were pretty well behaved too. dr. e had some concerns/questions about things i did, but it was because of the saxon math program. when i explained afterwards, she understood. i still need to work on my classroom management skils, and dr. e suggested i use popsicle sticks or something to randomly call on students. she told ms. rogers about how creative i am and good with technology, so now ms. rogers wants to see for herself! ^___^; i did good with my modeling and positive praise, i used good grammar, i was encouraging and friendly, and i made use of "teachable moments." (yes, taylor asked about groundhog day, so i explained it.) dr. e is gonna come back when i do my science unit so she can see "me" teach without having to follow a prewritten lesson plan from saxon. ms. rogers said if i have an idea about something, for me to just run with it and that she's open to anything. the observation went well, and i feel good about it. ^___^

my first map lesson was a big hit. we didn't really even "do" very much really. i read them a book. then i had them sit on the floor in front of me and i had a globe. we talked about the poles and the equator, and the kids had some great questions. they asked where the twin towers are that fell down; they asked where the tsunami was; jarrett asked where the titanic sunk. i didn't know; ms. rogers didn't know. i told the kids if they find out tonight and tell me first thing tomorrow, i'll give them a treat. ^___^ the kids were really into the maps and we got into talking about longitude and latitude and the international dateline and the solar system and everything! i asked who uses maps, and connor said "pirates" which was perfect because then i got to tell them how we're going to have a treasure hunt on friday!

there was a rally for the tsunami fund raiser this afternoon. the school ended up collecting $4,500. wow. that's a lot considering their goal was $1,000.

oh, it's supper time- more later!

======== after supper ========
let's see, what else? well, maybe i already said it all. ^___^; logan wasn't at school today. i made travious pull a card for acting goofy and purposely tripping during the assembly. um... tomorrow is differentiated math. i gotta come up with something to do for that, so i guess i have some work to be doing!

i can't wait until friday. on friday i get to play a game with my best friend! ^___^

[ mood | busy ]

friday was a pretty eventful day at school. i had car rider lane duty again. it was freeeezing. i had my hair pulled up, so my ears went totally numb. it was really windy too, so that made it even more cold. like, bitter cold. luckily, someone comes at 7:25 to relieve us, so i only had to freeze for 25 minutes or so. it was dress-down day though, so i had on jeans and this really thin shirt which wasn't the best thing to be wearing outside.ms. rogers left some stuff in her car, so once i started DOL, she went to her car and left me with the kids. well, i say left me, ms. valentine was still there, and of course, brandy and mrs. holloman were next door. anyway, the kids did really well with ms. rogers out of the room. they were even really quiet during calendar time. once the actual math lesson started though, they kind of...didn't listen as much, i guess i would say. it got to the point where ms. rogers said, "if i see you not paying attention and miss ashley doesn't, i'm going to make you pull two cards." well, i guess i didn't see nathan and travious playing with each other's hands because i was listening to someone give an answer, so ms. rogers made them pull 2 cards each. then i felt bad i hadn't caught them myself. when i was passing out papers to the kids after that, i saw jaxon shove his caddy across the table, so... i made him pull a card for that. ^___^;; jaxon ended up pulling all his cards on friday. ^__^;

while the kids were gone to their specials, me and ms. rogers sat down and talked about my goal for next week. she said i need to focus on classroom management again, and i definitely agreed with her. she said i'm doing really good with the positive praise and trying to control the class that way. i am in total agreeance with her about working more on the classroom management thing. especially being able to watch all the kids all the time. it comes with experience. ms. rogers also said if i don't like the card system and i want to come up with something else to use, i can. i thought that was really nice of her to offer. lots of teachers wouldn't let you change things in their classrooms. i've noticed though, the supervising teachers during student teaching are a lot more aware of what needs to be done. they know what you're there to do. with practicum teachers, they just sorta always said, "do whatever" which i hated. student teaching is great so far. ^___^

ms. rogers and i also talked about my units i'm going to be doing. i finally just set a date for them because i knew if i didn't, i'd keep putting them off. ^___^; i'm starting my social studies unit on monday, so tomorrow! my unit is going to be on maps. they have to learn where the equator and north and south poles are on a globe. they also need to learn how to read map keys and grids and things. soooo.... i'm going to have sort of a pirate theme. reading maps is fine, and we'll do some of that, but we're also going to read treasure maps. ^____^ i bought plastic gold coins and necklaces and chocolate coins and a treasure box. we're going to have a treasure hunt on friday, and then they'll all get treats. ^__^ it should be really fun! yesterday i went shopping and found some really great stuff to use. books and all. i only found ONE thing for my unit on states of matter though: a book. i'm not doing that unit until the week of valentine's day, so i have more time to work on that.

i think i wrote on thursday about how brandy was sick. she left at 9:45 on friday and went to the doctor. she came back around 1:00. she basically had what she thought she had which was a bladder/urinary tract infection. so we swapped stories about that while i helped her grade some papers. she told me about some over the counter pills that work really good, and sound almost exactly like the perscription pills i usually get perscribed, so i might have to try them out. it's kind of silly going to the doctor when you've already diagnosed yourself and you just need a piece of paper for some drugs.

anyway, before brandy left at 9:45, she mentioned us collaborating on our units again. well...i've been against that idea from the start. when me and ms. rogers sat down to talk about things, i mentioned the fact brandy wanted to do a collaborative thing. ms. rogers said her and mrs. holloman sometimes to things together, but not often because then you have like 50 kids to worry about. plus, since me and brandy both are working on classroom management, it'd be even harder for us to keep control. also, i don't even know all of mrs. holloman's kids, so ms. rogers said it'd be best if we each do our own things with our own classes. i was happy to hear that since that's how i feel also. but, at least i made an effort, i really asked about it, so i tried. i can tell brandy that if she asks.

logan had a rough day on friday. the day started out good. he followed along during math real well and got his work done. when he went over to mrs. holloman's for reading though, there was a situation. i'm not sure what exactly, but mrs. holloman brought him over to ms. rogers and i heard them talking to logan. ms. rogers told him that sometimes if he needs to just go somewhere and calm down; he should. i guess maybe logan got upset about something and acted out maybe. then later in the day, he apparently grabbed some boy's shirt. ms. rogers got really upset about that. logan denied doing anything. ms. rogers told him if he lied he was going to get into double trouble. i don't know if he actually admitted anything or no. ms. rogers told logan that he hadn't acted that way since he'd been in her room and that he'd better not start now. that she knew he was smart, and bright, and he didn't need to take his anger out on people. i need to talk to other people about logan so i can get started writing my student study about him.

on...wednesday (?) the class filled up their compliment jar. ms. rogers has a little jar that says "kernels of compliment." each time the class gets a compliment on good behavior from someone in the school, she puts a handful of kernels in the jar. when the jar is full; the class gets a popcorn party. well, they filled it up. the whole school is getting a popcorn party on monday for the tsunami fundrasier (the school raised over $3,000), so ms. rogers let the kids vote, and all but one (cubie) voted for an ice cream party instead. ms. rogers got them all ice cream sandwiches. i didn't eat one; i was freezing! it was after lunch, and the cafeteria had been like ice! anyway, so the kids got ice cream. later in the day, it was the january birthday's celebration so they all got kool-aid, cupcakes, and cookies. the kids were taking the cupcakes and smearing the icing on their lips, so it looked like lipstick. the boys were the ones who started the whole thing. it got pretty wild. they had icing on their noses ad chins and everywhere inbetween. it was pretty funny. ^___^

jarrett: he is a really unique, unusual, different type of kid. he's got red hair, and his shirts are always tucked into his jeans tight. he was singing in class on friday. i asked him what he was singing and he said "jimmy buffet." then he gave me a list of things he likes: jimmy buffet, anything to do with islands and the carribbean, nascar, bobby labonte, and sailing... he's just really different. oh, and thursday he came back from reading and his chair had been moved and he said "i don't pay $3,000 to come here and sit on thin air!" he's so funny, especially when he's being serious. ^____^

well, tomorrow i'm being observed by dr. e. ms. rogers is going to tell the kids that dr. e is coming to watch them. she said if they knew she was coming to watch me, there'd be a few who would try and mess things up. ^__^; so hopefully it'll go okay. i'm not too nervous about it right now. i'm more anxious about working on my social studies map unit! hopefully, that'll go well too. ^___^

until tomororw....bye! ^_____^

yesterday and today [27 Jan 2005|05:19pm]
[ mood | chipper ]
[ music | crazy - aerosmith ]

okay, so my entry from yesterday was somehow sucked up into the cyber-vortex of time and space. :P i’ll try to recreate the masterpiece (ha ha) I typed yesterday.

yesterday was a good day. brandy wasn’t there though. her grandma died. :( anyway, the morning’s math lesson went pretty well. logan didn’t finish his work though. i had to take about 5 kids out in the hall to finish their math assessments from monday. most of them require extra time to complete assignments. it’s on their IEP. so anyway, two of the kids had more than 1 paper to finish, including logan. well, logan finished his first one, so i gave him his second one which consisted of 100 addition problems. he had only finished 1 problem on the page. after a few minutes of sitting on the floor, staring at his paper, he laid his paper and pencil down beside him. minutes went by. he made no attempt to do his work. finally, i had to do something:

1. i encouraged him, told him i knew he was smart and could finish it.
2. i tried the whole “the sooner you finish the sooner you can go back to the room” routine.
3. i told him i didn’t want him to get in trouble.
4. i asked him what 2+2 was (one of the problems)
5. talked to him about making good choices, not bad ones.

by this point, the other 4 kids had gone back to the room after finishing their papers. i was desperate for logan to do something, anything. but he wasn’t even speaking; just nodding or shaking his head. finally i said, “okay, if you don’t want to do your work, take it to ms. rogers and tell her you don’t want to do it. she’s probably going to make you pull a card, and you’ll have to miss recess to finish it anyway.” well he didn’t like that idea. i know he hates to write, so i offered to read him the problems, have him tell me the answers, and me write his answers for him. he didn’t take my up on that offer either. after sitting silently for quite awhile, he finally said, “she’ll probably send me to mrs. ashby.” (the principal) and i was like “yep, probably.” i presented him with his choices again, and he decided to go with me reading the problems to him and writing his answers.

he rattled the answers off fairly quickly. he’s very smart. he just hates writing and has to constantly be prompted to do his work. anyway, we did about 80 problems and then he said, “can i do the rest by myself?” and then he did. he only missed about 4 out of 100. i told ms. rogers what i did, and she said that was fine. logan just needed the modification to his work, but they don’t make the modifications for him on a daily basis. i don’t understand why. i mean, obviously he can’t go through life never writing just because he doesn’t like to, but there are other things that could be done surely. oh well.

yesterday was early dismissal day. that usually happens on one wednesday every month. the kids left school at 12:45. then, there was a brief faculty meeting followed by grade level team meetings. ms. rogers is the leader of the second grade team. she has to record what they discuss at the meeting. she’s a bit of a perfectionist. she wrote something wrong with her sharpie marker pen, and she asked for white out. one of the other teachers said, “can’t you just cross it out?” and ms. rogers said, “no, get me your white out.” it was pretty funny, but probably one of those “you had to be there” funny moments. the meeting was pretty interesting. they planned out all sorts of things like field trips, end of the year parties and slide shows, paragraph assessments and other stuff. it was neat i guess. ^__^

today brandy was back. she didn’t feel too good though, and didn’t know why. she was grading papers before lunch and almost passed out. during lunch, she was shaking. after lunch, mrs. Holloman took her to the nurse. i didn’t find out what the nurse said. i hope she feels better. she’s not my best friend in the world. but he grandma died and she’s sick and stuff so yeah, i definitely hope she feels better soon.

the kids were pretty restless today. thursday is their extra “special” day. so they had computer and art today. that interrupted math like 3 times today. i thought we’d never finish. me or ms. rogers constantly had to tell them to be quiet. tomorrow i am just going to have to break down, be firm, and pull their cards. i’m going to give them a warning before calendar tomorrow, and after that; it’s their choice if they want to lose a card or not. my goal for this week was to work on classroom management skills, and i do call the kids down for talking too much and not sitting down and stuff, but i haven’t pulled a single card yet. ^__^: i don’t wanna be a bad guy. like ms. rogers said though, after i pull that first card, they’ll know i’m serious so….i guess i better get tougher. ^__^;

tomorrow is dress down day so i get to wear my jeans! yay! ^___^ plus, it’s weekend time! i’m not going to the village this weekend. nope, i’m going next weekend. this weekend i need to get some serious work done on units, portfolio, and preparing for my observation on monday. also, it’s supposed to snow on saturday, so i would hate to be snowed in lexington and not be able to get back for my observation.

recess was inside today because it was so cold outside. several little “centers” were set up around the room, but peyton, halle, breanna, and makayla were drawing so i sat down with them. i started drawing and they were amazed at my little doodles and wanted me to teach them how to draw dogs and mice and cats and stuff. then they wanted to trace my drawings. it was so cute. i had a little fan club going on. ^____^

so! anyway, that’s the scoop for now i guess. ^___^

well, another day of student teaching is over. i did my fraction lesson today in differentiated gender math class. it was loud, chaotic, and hectic, not to mention messy, but it went well actually. ^___^ the kids enjoyed it, understood what was going on, and cleaned up their messes.

i sat in on a parents-teacher conference with ms. rogers and russell's mom today. russell apparently moved here from florida to live with his grandma. his mom wasn't here at the time. when she came back, she was (is) pregnant. she has like 3 kids already. and apparently schools in florida are different here than there, so somewhere russell missed like a huge chunk of instruction in school. so now he's very behind. that's what the conference was about. ms. rogers is doing interventions to try and get him into special ed.

makayla told me this afternoon she got adopted yesterday. my reaction in my head was 0___________0 (!?!?!?) because i didn't know she didn't live with parents, but my reaction to her of course was congratulations, and i asked her if she was excited. she said yes, and told me her new last name, so yay for her having a new family. ^__^

um...what else? well, my day went fine, that's pretty much it. ^___^ can i graduate now?!

i got home from lexington yesterday afternoon. i got to lexington about 7:30 on friday night i guess. i had a good time! only, the time was too short. ^__^; it was cold too. it snowed while i was there. i was half hoping it would snow so much i'd get stuck there. ^___^;; of course, then that would mean i'd have to student teach for longer, and i'm ready for may! ^_____^ g-r-a-d-u-a-t-i-o-n!!

today was the first day i did "real" teaching. on friday, ms. rogers let me do calendar, but she did the actual math lesson. today i started off with DOL (daily oral langauge) and then I did math. on tuesday's they do that differentiated gender math, so they have a lesson to make up either on monday or wednesday. this week it was monday, so i had to actually do two days of lessons. oh man! it was the longest period of time i have ever done math i think! it was at least 2 and a half hours long! the kids went to library though, so we finished up the last 30 minutes or so after they came back. the lesson(s) went fine! i made sure to speak loudly during calendar and the lessons (and like ms. rogers' said it would be, my voice was slightly sore afterwards), and the kids were pretty well behaved. ms. rogers said i did great for my first day, and assured me that every lesson wouldn't be as long as the one today. ^__^;

today was the 100th day of school. i observed a kindergarten class this afternoon (my last observation). they were counting out 100 snacks. man, they had a bowlful of yummy stuff like peanuts, froot loops, goldfish crackers, marshmallows, pretzels, tons of stuff! they were all so cute wearing their little 100th day crowns. ^__^

so i'm excited now! today went well, and dr. edington is observing me and brandy on monday (me first). hopefully that will go just fine. the lesson won't be very exciting on monday (it's on expanded notation), but it should go well.

i have to decide for sure what i'm doing for gender math tomorrow, and then i might just get started on my social studies and/or science unit since my highly intelligent boyfriend is off at school getting ready for his class on how to use computers. ^____~

student teaching day! [18 Jan 2005|07:08pm]
[ mood | loved ]

american idol is coming on, so here's a brief list of how today went:

* had breakfast with mom and katee.

* mrs. luck (who i had for language arts) told me she put in a good word for me and wished me lucky today.

* i had to go to prayer group with ms. rogers. the prayer group was in mrs. johnson's (who i had for math) room. she was excited for me.

* angel fridinger (teacher at grapevine, she graduated a couple years ago from the murray program) told her mom (an aide at hanson) to introduce herself to me. she did and wished me luck!

* the cafeteria lady told me she was so happy to have me in the school.

* principal mrs. ashby said she was glad to have me there.

* hanson doesn't teach science and social studies until the 3rd grade.

* i have to create a science and social studies unit.

* they teach phonics really weird.

* they switch classes, and i don't know who the kids are or where they come from.

* i ate lunch with the kids. i didn't wanna crowd the teacher table.

* i made an elaborate pattern block thing with some kids.

* lots of people told me hi and smiled.

* i have to start teaching next week: D.O.L. and math

* um...brandy had to borrow a personal item from me! ^____^

that's it for now! my day was pretty good i guess. i was nervous though. i thought i'd be sick this morning. ^___^;; i'll give more detail soon!
