Clays May Have Aided Formation of Primordial Cells

HHMI researchers have discovered that clays may have
catalyzed the spontaneous assembly of fatty acids into the
small sacs that ultimately evolved into the first living
cells. The researchers also demonstrated that these vesicles
could be induced to grow and to split into separate vesicles
under laboratory conditions.

Research published in the October 24, 2003, issue of Science.

£150,000 for 'ultimate boy's toy'

The ultimate "boy's toy" - a high-speed land and water vehicle - has been launched on the River Thames.
toy

The amphibious vehicle is designed to reach speeds of 100mph on land and over 30mph on water and can switch between the two surfaces at the switch of a button.

According to its designers it is neither a boat with wheels nor just a waterproof car.

Gibbs Technologies says that no other road-legal amphibian has managed to exceed 6mph on water.

Since the invention of the car, there have been many attempts to develop amphibian vehicles.

Previous attempts have failed because of the vehicle's inability to climb out of the water and skim along the surface.

However Neil Jenkins, managing director of Gibbs Technologies, claimed this engineering breakthrough was a world first.

He said that by licensing the technology a whole new spectrum of vehicles would be born.

The company is currently producing a launch series of 100 vehicles due to be available later this year.

The Gibbs Aquada Bond Series will cost £150,000. The company believes that people will pay for the "freedom and experience" the novelty vehicle will allow.

Although the makers hope their vehicle could be used for leisure, they say the technology could one day service the military, emergency and rescue services.

BERKELEY PHYSICISTS BUILD WORLD'S SMALLEST MOTOR

Only 15 years after UC Berkeley engineers built the first micro-scale
motor, a UC Berkeley physicist has created the first nano-scale motor
- a gold rotor on a nanotube shaft that could ride on the back of a
virus.

"It's the smallest synthetic motor that's ever been made," said Alex
Zettl, professor of physics at UC Berkeley and faculty scientist at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. "Nature is still a little bit
ahead of us - there are biological motors that are equal or slightly
smaller in size - but we are catching up."

Zettl and his UC Berkeley graduate students and post-docs reported
their feat in the July 24 issue of Nature.

Using a tool kit of lasers, tiny beads and a Lego set,
Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers have made the
first measurement of the torsional, or twisting, elasticity
of a single molecule of DNA.

The measurements reveal that DNA is significantly stiffer
than previously thought and, when wound, may in fact provide
enough power to be used as a sort of molecular, rubber-band
motor to propel nanomachines. Although that type of
application may be well in the future, the studies are
significant because they offer a blueprint for measuring the
contortions that DNA undergoes during replication and other
key processes.

Research published in the July 17, 2003, issue of Nature.
