6:05 pm - queergirlsbooks

|
due to a common interest overlap, i thought some of the people here might be interested in knowing about the existence of this community: queergirlsbooks, a community to discuss books written by, for and about queer girls, or any other books of interest to queer girls. Girl is defined as anyone who self-identifies as female.
my apologies for the cross-posting.

just saw an interesting movie on sundance channel - it is about SGL couple together for 40 years, both domestically and in business: The name of the movie: why pay two rents? From the description on Sundance:
Remy Weber's moving short documentary celebrates the 40-year relationship - both in business and domestically - of Stan Selub and Paul Miller, who for many years ran a fabled Greenwich Village antique shop. Together, as well as in revealing separate interviews, Stan and Paul chart their partnership and the political and cultural changes they have witnessed during the past four decades. Winner of the Best Documentary award at the Athens International Film and Video Festival.

9:57 am - REMINDER: Dyke Night @ DC Eagle, TOMORROW!
|
pegsioux
|
TOMORROW night. It's time again.
That's right. Monthly Dyke Night at the DC Eagle. Wednesday July 28th. 9PM until they kick us out.
Wildly cheap liquor! Dimly lit space! Dykes! Dykes! Dykes! Free safer sex kits courtesy of the fabulous Carl Vogel Center!
Last month over FORTY queer women showed up to cruise, be cruised, hang out and soak up the atmosphere of DC's premier leather bar. There was much hotness. Butches were packing. There was supersexy bar staff. Hell, maybe a femme or two was even hiding a salami under her skirt, who knows? Rumor has it that the bathrooms were very busy and that there was more than one corset in our midst!
Do you know that the DC Eagle really, really wants us to be there? They have women both as management and as bar staff and yes, that really is one of the bartenders on the flyer below.
Come on down and check it out. We'll be taking over the ENTIRE first floor this time, hogging both pool tables and looking mighty fine doing it, thank you very much.
We won't bite...on the first date.

3:03 pm - queer community in d.c.?
|
hilmarie
|
hey,
i'm new to the community and want to introduce myself. i'm moving to d.c. in about a month from northampton, mass. and i'm trying to find a queer community to become involved with.
i identify as a queer woman, a feminist, a genderpositive advocate and a trans ally. i have heard a lot of mixed things about how gay-friendly d.c. and i'm down for the straight-up truth from people invovled in the community.
as my lj profile says...overall, i'm kinda shy, wicked afraid of birds, think love is one of the most important things ever, have a special place in my heart for patti smith and hate gold jewelry. haha.
okay, so thanks for letting me ramble...and thanks for welcoming me to the group.

"lets go on a 'MAKE THE WORLD AWESOME' tour 2004 ..... we can shower everyone in our own fluids"-eric fucking melton
I'm totally taking eric up on his offer. totally comment on one way YOU would make the world a better place.
only the awesome need apply.
kateri: we need to try to use the word "I" less, or completely disregard it. This involves using all of the following: To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To expect the best of yourself and others. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. To realize that we need to work together and look beyond the stereotypes and presumptions that we have of each other, so that we can unlock each other's particular potential in how we can contribute to the healing of our world. To know we are never alone.
kevin: take away the gasoline engine
jenn- I would kill everyone, or get them off this planet. the less people around me the better, and if that means i have to off myself as well, so be it. oh shit i just changed the administrative password when i was reinstalling this computer. damn i don't know if i did something right or something horribly, horribly wrong. fuck it, I'm killing everyone...

9:47 am - DC Truth (cross post)
|
blackgriot
|
I find it fascinating that DC has two openly gay City Council members - one is a Republican and the other a Democrat - both are white. In this city which has a majority Black population and also a sizeable Gay population, Phil Phannell's observation (made years ago) is one sad truth:
"It is totally disgraceful that in 'Chocolate City,' Black Gays have no political clout. . . . When it comes to the Gay civil rights movement in this town, the Black participation is negligible. You could fit all of the Black Gay activists in a phone booth and pray that they can raise the change to make a call to get no answer."
Read more about this living legend in today's Post. Phil Pannell is a vanishing breed, a SGL leaders whose truth is spoken no matter what, a man who should be Mayor, if not much much more.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet (please forgive me if it has), but there is going to be a Virginia state-wide protest of the "Marriage Affirmation Act" on Wednesday, June 30th. The Northern Virginia one will take place at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax, Va at 6pm (activities start at 5:30pm, though). More infomation and directions to the FCGC can be found at standupforequality.org.
If you're a Virginian or at least someone who wants to support the repeal of this horrible anti-gay law, please do try to attend ^_^

THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT, 6/23/04
Tired of the same ole dance music at Chaos? Bored with all the straight couples hogging the dance floor there?
Then take a Wednesday off and get your ass down to the DC Eagle for Dyke Night.
This month there is a kickass drink special, all clear liquors (vodka, gin, rum, tequila) for $1.00. ONE measly dollar, can you believe it? Just think, you could get tanked for five bucks and meet a totally hot butch. Or a femme. Or neither...hell, you don't even have to drink and you can meet hot dykes anyway!
So please, come hang out upstairs at Dyke Night on Wednesday, June 23. It's very casual, no you don't have to wear leather and no you don't have to be a pervert. Those things are great, but really, it's a friendly laid-back crowd and I hear they're a rather nice looking bunch. :)
DC Eagle 639 New York Avenue, NW 9pm until closing, baby!

11:16 am - Help!!!
|

Remember all those times you didn't think your voice mattered?
Yesterday marked the beginning of the race to the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA).
The Conservative Right-wing (With Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist goose-stepping out front) Will bring the proposd amendment, which bans same sex couples from enjoying the rights afforded to heterosexuals, to a vote the week of July 16th. Seizing on their organizational strength, in churches across america pastors pleaded with their congregations to call and ask their senators to vote "YES" on the amendment.
It is possible that the Amendment could pass the Senate!
Please, take a few minutes to call and when they answer, "Hi, this is Senator {fill in the blank}'s office, how can I help you?" Tell them "I want to encourage the Senator to vote AGAINST the FMA." There will be a brief moment of shock, and you may have to repeat yourself.
Why the shock?
Because hundreds of Conservatives are flooding their offices with calls (just like they were told to in Church on Sunday) in favor of the amendment!
Here's how to fight back: 1.) Know your State's 2 Senators (or look them up at www.vote-smart.org) 2.) Call your senators. vote-smart.org will have contact info, or call the US Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for Your Senator's office. 3.) Tell them "Vote against the FMA!" 4.) Hang up and feel accomplished.
that's it. It takes maybe a minute. If you have a cell phone, you already have free long distance. I mean, come on, help out; It's in your own self interest.
