When you hear the term 'Y2K' or 'the millennium,' one of the first things to come to mind is 'the (Y2K or millennium) bug.'
What does that say about our sense of history and cultural memory?

Never take out an old journal and read it unless you have time to read all the rest, cause you'll get caught up. Caught up not only in the read, but in the past. So be alone, cause you'll get all depressed and moody because you're not as witty as you used to be, and you'll feel sorry for yourself when you know that, though you had a pretty bad life then, it's the downward spiral.

That J-Lake and J-Net moment was so fucking hott. With the "Rhythm Nation" redux as perfect foreplay. I didn't even notice the 'exposure' until they talked about it on the eleven o' clock news.

Momus: selections, 1986-1995 |
[31 Jan 2004|06:36pm] |
This is the track listing of the mixtape that introduced me to the troubadour-de-force, seven or eight years ago.
This site is now optimal for a survey of his discography; all the lyrics are there, to boot. His own site still bubbles over with information and curiosities. And then, of course, if you're click-lazy, there's his new LJ.
Side One Toothbrushhead (from Philosophy of Momus) The Ultraconformist (from Ultraconformist) In the Sanitorium (from Tender Pervert) Platinum (from Timelord) The Guitar Lesson (from Don't Stop the Night) Girlish Boy (from Philosophy of Momus) Don't Leave (Jacques Brel) (from Circus Maximus) The Charm of Innocence (from Tender Pervert) The Hairstyle of the Devil (from Don't Stop the Night) Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (from Don't Stop the Night) The Mother-In-Law (from Ultraconformist) Paper Wraps Rock (from Circus Maximus) Morality Is Vanity (from Monsters of Love: Singles 1985-90) Sinister Themes (from Ultraconformist)

Belinda vs Belinda
Which would you rather have as the throwaway candidate for leader of the Conservative Party of Canada? The irony is that the media had already reduced the former to a pretty face without a chance, so what difference does it make?

For the last couple of years, I totally forgot that Dick Cheney was the American vice president. Seriously. I even forgot that there WAS a vice president. Nothing to do with Canadian obliviousness to American politics -- I just never hear from him. Does he speak? Meanwhile I've gotten a constant earful from Rumsfeld, Powell, Ashcroft, Rice and all the other talking heads.
Under the fuhrer, they all sort of blend together.

I was going to make a case that Red Hot Chili Peppers stole the word "Californication" (1999) from the Rheostatics' "California Dreamline" (1992), in which the neologism appears, but then I learned that the J Geils Band wrote "Californicatin'" (1989), so my case got all muddled. I thought I could go with the 'dream' connection (compare song title "California Dreamline" with Peppers chorus "a dream of Californication") but then recalled that The Mamas and the Papas wrote "California Dreaming." So, no dice.

Next time you need a numerical term that is as hyperbolic as possible, why not plug some open source software while you're at it?
OMG it took a MOZILLION hours to open that webpage
OMG for the MOZILLIONTH time don't use browsers to download porn use KAZAA
(You could spell it "MOZILLAIONTH" if you're really anal. It does look funny.)

He doesn't even disable commenting. My hero.
I know he's always been 'web-ready' -- personal site since the dawning of the 'net, an ICQ number I once had, and of course a Friendster profile -- but starting an LJ is like having him take up residence in my building, y'know?
