Death in the family

Wife's sister-in-law died, no actual relation to me, but a decent person. Long bout with cancer. Wife has been in Canada all week, visiting, and I've been Mr Mom.

Being a mom or a dad is a tough enough job, but doing both is draining. I only wish I could do more. What the wife is going through, I can't fix, can't make it better, so I'll do all I can do, which is to hold down the fort till she returns

Daughter misses her, I miss her. SHe'll be gone a lot of this week, and I'll also be gone on wednesday, so Gramma will watch the daughter. Thank god for grammas. I'm anxious to get life back to normal, but then, who isn't? Wish me luck, I'll need some.

Nation of Riflemen. And women.

Full circle. This is my daughter, shooting a Stevens Crackshot 26 which my best friend loaned to me, which was his father's rifle when he was very young.
Nearly forty years ago this year, my father took me to a field in my grandfather's farm, put a shotgun in my hands (after carefully explaining the rules) and threw clays for me until I got the hang of leading them.

She carefully and eagerly followed my instructions, and did OK, for a beginner. Got the holes on the paper, after around 15 shots at 25 yards. I'm incredibly proud.

This is what it's about, folks. Don't wait until it's too late to pass the torch.

On music:

Today I listened to a different radio station than the usual. Wife is out of town, driving the Exploder, and I'm driving her honda in the interim.

So I listen to one of the two decent stations her stereo can get clearly, and I hear the opening chords of a song I've loved for soooo long, Landslide, by Stevie Nicks. It sounds strange at first, but I attribute that to the very small speakers in the car.

Then, then, it starts. The Dixie chicks are singing Stevie's song.
