Ask Roberta Bragg: Answers to your toughest Windows security
questions
Windows is everywhere in the
enterprise -- but is it secure? Read
Roberta Bragg's solutions to common, real-world security
problems from the trenches of IT. Bragg (CISSP, MCSE) is a
widely read author, consultant and teacher with two technical
books on Windows 2000 security and one on Microsoft's ISA
Server firewall. Her advice spans a broad range of issues,
among them viruses, hackers, privacy, authentication and patch
management. Still need help?
Post it here Bragg will try to answer as many questions as
possible; however, questions that are of general interest have
priority. |

Using policies to manage Windows
desktops
Without policy, bad things happen. Security breaks down, since
you can't mandate security configurations; users get
frustrated because they can't configure their computers
properly; and users frequently change settings that they
shouldn't or break their computers because they don't
understand what they're doing. Learn how to use policy to
prevent these problems. |

Deploying Microsoft Service Packs
Service Packs are a compilation of bug fixes and
updates to the code base of Microsoft's operating systems
(Windows NT/2000/XP) or applications (Office, Exchange, SQL).
They are suppose to improve stability and enhance security, but
Microsoft's service packs have been known to create some serious problems of their
own, and can wreck havoc on your network. Before you jump right in
and deploy Windows 2000
Service Pack 3 or Windows
XP Service Pack 1 in your environment, take a minute to review
our best practices for testing and deploying Microsoft Service
Packs. |
