April 2nd - A day to reflect on the meaning of April 1st

UgarteHeaneyland directed me to a great list of April 1st hoaxes as well as one that should have made the list.

Pauly showed that he is capable of fooling his friends back in 2003, but these pranks are on a whole different level.

The Battle of Algiers (*****) Returns For 2 Weeks

SignorBy popular demand, the Film Forum has brought The Battle of Algiers back for a special two week run (tonight through April 15). As my review attests, this is one of the most amazing and impressive films ever made. It truly deserves my elusive 5 star rating. Enjoy!

Bullshit Blogger Banning

UgarteWhen someone calls you on an April Fool's Day prank, the only thing you can do is admit it. So when Felicia insists in her comments that she has been banned from the Colorado Belle, her casino of choice in Laughlin, NV, one must take it seriously.

She has apparently been blacklisted because of her blog.

The Colorado Belle can be reached at 877-460-0777 or cbelle@mrgmail.com. Let them know that this is bullshit. If, as her update now makes clear, the banning had something to do with her calling out a floorman for his inappropriate behavior, it is even worse.

Like that girlfriend you dated for too long . . .

Rick. . . the administration has clearly concluded that it can walk all over the American people, lie to them constantly, and face no serious consequences. In the face of Donnie's dissembling, Condi's "capitulation", and the White House's withholding of 75% of the documents released by the Clinton Archives to the 9/11 Comission, this should hardly be surprising. Folks, when she starts lying about stuff she doesn't even need to be lying about, it is time to kick her ass to the curb.

Thanks to Josh for the link.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #21, or Horseshoe Up My Ass

UgarteA week ago yesterday was the Churchwarden's game. A game of frivolity, drinking and cigars. Home game poker the way home game poker was meant to be played. I say this for two reasons. 1) It is as true as a Tiger Woods drive and 2) I am really hoping that Ilsa will finally come to a live game. She said that she was going to come, but at the very last minute claimed that she had an allergy attack.

Maybe a description of the game will get her to come out. Once she sees the way we play, I'll bet she can't help but come out of her internet-only shell. There has to be something that will work.

Yet Another Bad Beat Story + Quiz

RickI've got about $25K, which is just about average, and I draw KK in the BB. Nice. first position folds, second calls ($1K), and third raises all-in short-stacked. Fold around to me, and I re-raise the pot (which puts me all-in) to ensure that I'm heads-up against the raiser.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (½)

SignorThank God for Charlie Kaufman. Usually, a handful of intelligent, original, daring and, most importantly, good independent movies are released each year. However, it is hard to find an at least semi-widely distributed Hollywood movie, starring big name actors, sharing all of those characteristics, especially since the Cohen brothers and Kevin Smith seem to have lost their edge. But writer Charlie Kaufman has delivered with Being John Malkovich (****), Adaptation (***½) and now Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Ummmm....this is Disturbing

SignorAlways hard to tell whether, in a country like Iraq, violence and dissidence is wide spread, or whether a few incidents blow things out of proportion. But the shooting, burning, beating, parading and hanging of non-military foreign nationals by cheering Iraqis seems like something a hell of a lot more than just radical extremists.

Warning! The video footage is fairly graphic.

NBA Conspiracy Theory Playoff Picks

SignorRumors always abound that David Stern has a little extra influence over what happens in the NBA. Granted, a San Antonio vs. N.J. finals demonstrates that he is not in complete control, but here are my picks for how the early playoff mix will shake down ... if it happens, you know who to thank.

#1 Indiana vs. #8N.Y.: Indy has locked up the #1 seed, but the Knicks occupy the #7 spot, by ½ a game. Look for them to slide to the 8th spot so we can have one more go around of Reggie and Spike.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #20, or Purple Haze

UgarteLast Tuesday brought another game at Ferrari's with a familiar cast. Pauly already wrote the game up at Tao but strangely focused on his own hands, so I guess it's up to me to write about my own.

I also have some poker blog shoutouts.

I won't swear to it, but . . .

RickNational Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice is happy to talk about the Bush administration's handling of the terrorist threat -- as long as it isn't under oath.

I believe the Commission should be required to draw an adverse inference.

The Masses Have Spoken

UgarteThe Bush/Cheney campaign website created the "Sloganator" a DIY poster-design program that allowed you to insert campaign slogans into a stock Bush/Cheney '04 placard. The problems for B/C began almost immediately, as liberals jumped at the chance to stick it to the campaign. The campaign had to constantly revise the program to screen out references like "fascism" or "Stupid" (twice!) and then had to fight off a hack that, regardless of what one typed in, generated, e.g., "No Ass Fucking" as the slogan on the final product. The best of the slogans have been collected and put to music by Bluetooth Against Bush.

Enjoy. If that link isn't working, enjoy it here.

Thanks to Wonkette and Daniel Radosh for the links.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #19, or Return of the Heidi

UgarteI've finally got my DSL sorted out so I can blog again. With only my memory to guide me, I have three games to write up over the next few days, last Friday at Chez Helmut, Tuesday at Ferrari's and Wednesday at the Churchwarden's.

Today's featured game is Helmut's.

Signor Ferrari’s 4 Star Movie Rating System (which actually has 5 stars):

Signor***** A timeless classic. Reserved for the best of the best. Citizen Kane, Star Wars, The Godfather (Iⅈ), The Battle of Algiers, etc. I would put the three Lord of the Rings movies, as a unit and in their extended version, into this category, but probably not any one of them, in its theatrical version, by itself. Others would include Branagh's Henry V, Psycho, The Graduate, Bridge on the River Kwai, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dr. Strangelove, My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz.

**** An excellent movie. Top ten %. Movies from 2003 that I would give four stars to would be The Return of the King & The Fog of War. Past movies would include The Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, The Pianist, Shakespeare in Love, Gone With the Wind, Forest Gump, maybe Spider-Man (right in between ***½ and ****), Toy Story, Rollerball.

Rounders (**)

Signor

I watched Rounders with some of the poker crew last night. In the typical movie review context, I don’t have much to say. It is a decent to good formula movie set in the world of poker. The acting is ok for the most part (Malkovich is a little annoying), the poker scenes are ok and the poker speak was solid. Certainly a fun watch with poker players and a couple glasses of wine.

But there certainly are some things to talk about, they just require having seen the movie. So consider yourself forewarned if you haven’t.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #18.5, or A Short Explanation

UgarteI played at Helmut's on Friday ... but haven't blogged it because my DSL went down over the weekend. The DSL failure was the subject of a separate blog entry ... but pMachine ate the entry without posting it. In any event, none of it is my fault. NONE OF IT IS MY FAULT!

I am playing tonight at Ferrari's game and again tomorrow at the Churchwarden's. To keep these three back-to-back entries from dragging on too long, they will each be separate. Also, they will not be timely since I will almost certainly (repeatedly) forget to bring the disk into work after I write up the games at home. If you want the earliest possible report on tonight's game, check in with Pauly. If you want a prediction on tonight's game, I say Pauly goes down like a groupie on X.

Signor Ferrari's NCAA Tournament Pool

SignorIf you can get me $10 and a filled out bracket, you can be in Signor Ferrari's NCAA Tournament Pool. This also doubles as my firms tourney pool, so it will be decent sized. Scoring is 1-2-4-8-12-16. Split is 70%-20%-10% and worst entry gets their entry fee returned. And if you can't get enought tourney action, join Pauly's pool as well.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #18, or Where's Wildo?

UgarteI was really looking forward to blogging the tournament, but frankly there is more to blog about the software than there is about my play. I busted out quickly and without much drama ... but of course the lack of drama is what is so bad about the software.

So with much props to tournament winner Otis (who gets a link to his non-poker site for winning), not quite as much props (but still substantial props) to second place Chris Halverson and bronze props to Pauly, here's my story.

John McCain for V.P.

SignorJohn Kerry's V.P. that is. Apparently it could happen. Sure, it is not too likely. But I think such a ticket would pretty much spell Bush's doom --and that would be a good thing.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #17, or Like I Was Saying

UgarteMan, it feels good to get it right. After boldly predicting that I felt like I was about to turn my game around, I went out and had my best game in over a year. I don't really think this means that I've turned the corner, but it sure feels a hell of a lot better than losing.

Maybe it is a result of the winning, but the games the last two nights were more fun than I've had in a while at the tables. The games were full of coffeehousing and, more importantly, trash talking. And the cards were pretty good also.

You've read Pauly's report, so here's my take on the game plus some shout outs to the Poker Blog world.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #16.5, or Placeholder

UgartePauly beat me to the blog with a report of last night's game - and graciously sent people here for my account.

But I haven't written it yet. It will be up tonight, I promise. Do you think I am not going to Grovel about my best session in over a year?

Also - while I appreciate Pauly's comments - everything I know about Omaha, I learned from Annie Duke. I am a mere speck on her windshield.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #16, or Tight as a Drum

UgarteIt was a poker-heavy weekend; two online tournaments at Bugsy's Club and a night of low stakes and camraderie at Coach's place. I didn't have much financial success, but I feel comfortable saying that this was the best I have played in a while.

Both tournaments started well and ended with bad beats and the game at Coach's could have gone so well (though it didn't)-- but I don't think I should have done anything differently.

Does Citizen Kane Deserve its Status in the Annals of Film?

Signor

What constitutes a great movie or the greatest of all movies? Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane is the consensus pick as the “best” movie of all time, but, as Rick oh so eloquently demonstrated, not everyone is enamored with this film. So, is Citizen Kane one of those movies that lands on the lists of all time greats more because of nostalgic memories and its influence on future filmmakers, than because of its ability to stand the test of time as a great movie in any era? Or is Rick off his rocker? I am here to tell you -- it is definitely the latter.

Citizen Kane -- in the THEATER -- tonight through Monday at the Film Forum

Signor

Ok, I promise that I am not going to turn into an advertisement for the Film Forum, but this is a chance to see what might be the best movie of all time (Ranked #1 by AFI and Sight and Sound) in the theater. It has been many years since I have seen it and the first in the theater. I'll be there tonight.

Ugarte's Poker Grovel #15 or Getting Ready

UgarteI am starting this entry at 6:30am because, along with hand-made clothes at third world prices, I returned from Pakistan with a head cold and an internal clock that pays no heed to the rising and setting of the sun. So when I couldn't shut my eyes again at 5:30, I decided to download True Poker - the software I am going to need to enter the Poker Blogger WPT II, set up by Iggy.

I guess I should be nice, as True has agreed to host a tournament that I want to play in - but this place has some "features" that I think will ultimately drive me crazy.

Also, some more less-than-stellar play.
