I normally don't post random event announcements, but how can I resist The City of Lost Mittens when I'm email this come on:
The spectacle of one hundred and seventy-five mittens strung in the air combines the melancholy of the lost glove with the playful delight in the possibility of a reunion of glove and owner.

This is a post that you just have to accept for what it is. Don't ask questions like...what the hell did you do this for? Or...who cares? Just accept that it's a nice list with some interesting stuff. Or not.
Anyway, I had some free time on my hands so I decided to compile a comprehensive list of all the neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I told you, no questions! Stop reading if you think poorly of this project.
I started with Brooklyn.net Neighborhoods, which appears to be the most comprehensive source, and in any case is top in Google. Then I compared other sources including Brooklyn OnLine, About: Brooklyn and the Wikipedia.
What I found was a number of neighborhoods which appeared on only one of these four lists (I only counted a Wikipedia listing if it had an associated entry). After some cross-referencing I was able to come up with a list of all of these "orphan" neighborhoods, which I now declare do not exist. On the flipside are those 'hoods which were on three or four of these lists, which definitely exist. Anyway, here are the lists, use them as you see fit.

I recently made the trek north to see the mall at Columbus Circle. The architecture is pretty interesting, especially the striking front window overlooking the Circle. I could do without the throngs of gawkers and overpriced merchandise, but what can I say, I'm crabby that way.
Here are some photos of the building, in Part 2 I'll show photos of the shopping.

Along with fellow NY bloggers ENY is featured in MUG's 10 Great Things article.
Update: Helpful ENY reader Molly reports that "The Donald" is addressed with an article, not a preposition. I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused. Can I still apply for The Apprentice 2?

Last night's PhotoBloggers event at the Apple store was a lot of fun and showed off some great work. Here's Gothamist's coverage.
Also, I noticed a discrepency between people who called themselves "photobloggers" and those who preferred "fotologgers." GoogleFight gives the decision to PhotoBloggers, 5,410 to 2,690.

Ever notice how all the "Close Door" buttons in New York elevators are totally worn out, yet pressing them (usually) has no effect whatsoever on the doors. Well, the same "mechanical placebo" is being offered by the city's Department of Transportation, which the Times is reporting allows thousands of crosswalk buttons to exist without any functional purpose. Other than making us think they work, that is.

Like FreshDirect, the newly launched Grand Street News isn't for the entire Lower East Side, only a select few. Yes, this new neighborhood news zine covers only Grand Street, the middle-class hideaway where, among others, ENY is based.
When the first issue passed under my door last month I assumed the whole things was an advertorial for LoHo Realty, the eponymous local real estate moguls -- well, hold on, can you be eponymous if you name the whole neighborhood yourself? Anyway, we'll leave that for someone else. The point is that LoHo seems to have bought all the advertising available in the slim publication, including a spot above the publication's logo.
After reading issue #2 last night, I actually ran into the editor, Yori Yanover in the elevator on his way up to interview the head chef for Katz's deli. Apparently the chef lives on the 17th floor of my building. Next time I need a hotdog in the middle of the night...

The Times is reporting that the misnamed TLC is proposing a 26% fare rise for city taxis. My initial reaction, of course, is revulsion at yet another increase in the expensive cost of living in the city. But on second thought, I think they've essentially been forced into this position by the MTA's fare increases last year. When I'm out with my wife or a friend it makes much more sense to take a $5 or $6 cab ride rather than two $2 metrocard swipes.
The real problem is the uneven distribution of monthly and weekly metrocards. This happened last week -- imagine three friends going to watch football or see a movie in another neighborhood. It's cold outside. The bus isn't coming. You say, "Hey, it's the same amount of money for a cab." But your friend has a monthly card so he's riding free. Friendships end over a lousy $2 ride.
OK, I've stopped making sense.

Nice little QA about Jen from Gothamist from AMNY (PDF, so if your computer crashes, don't blame me).
The comments on the Gothamist message board about the article are pretty amusing. Apparently Jen is now a hot property and Jake is soooooo gay.

Does anyone remember the New York Times Annual Index books from the library? They were annual tomes, thick and olive green if I remember correctly, which a student or researcher would have to pore through year-by-year to find references. Well, I remember them at least -- I'm old, ok, back off.
I was just searching around the Times Website when I noticed a tab on the search results page which lets you run your search on "Articles: 1851-1995." One click later and you're knee deep in the archive; no books, no libraries, nothing. Holy crap!
I spent a little time searching around for neat random stuff (I'll leave it to you to find the articles about the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn, the end of the World Wars, etc.):
Robert Moses needs $65 million for roads for the security of the city during WWII.
Accounts of Boss Tweed's diamond and how he got it (1871).
Discussion of the recent World's Fairs and how the idea itself has become a bit "old fashioned" (1910).
The summary articles are free, the full images $2.95.

Lockhart is quoted by the Times about FreshDirect LES discrimination. But it's not the lack of food delivery that get's him down, it's the inability to chat about it:
You want to be able to talk about it at a cocktail party. They're cutting us out of cocktail conversation.
But aren't we getting enough cocktail party material out of complaining about it?

I'm impressed by any blog entry longer than about 100 words, so Lockhart's extensive LES Awards blew me away.
You know Lockhart, I wouldn't have minded being asked my opinion of Schillers and Piano's. As if I go to those places. As if I leave my house and the warm comfort of my Tivo. OK, it was probably a good choice to not ask my opinion, though for the record I like the $15 ham sandwiches at 'inoteca.
Part 2 has been published.

When did the Times get so darn funny? Today's article about the absurdly confusing upcoming changes to the subway service starts with:
Like the "easy to assemble" train set wrapped in a bow under the Christmas tree, New Yorkers will get a gift early in the New Year that requires reading the instructions carefully.
Then suggests the following potential service announcement:
Try this potential line, for example: "The Brighton line, currently the Q, formerly the D, and soon to be the B, will now go up Sixth Avenue."
Or maybe, it's not the Times but the MTA that's being funny. I still don't understand why there's a V train, except to annoy me and fellow LESers while amusing the more upscale hipsters who actually get off at Second Avenue.
But the humor continues (or, was presaged, I guess) yesterday when the newspaper of record included this astute comment in its coverage of the Lenny Bruce pardon:
Being dead, Mr. Bruce is not expected to reap any immediate benefit from the pardon.
Hmm, remind me what "postumously" means again.

Not sure why I got this link from the Tuscaloosa News, but anyway it seems like a NY story. Gov. Pataki has pardoned "obscene" comedian Lenny Bruce for charges relating to his 1964 performance at Cafe Au Go Go. I've long suspected that Pataki resembled Chevy Chase, so maybe there's some sympathy there.
